Long before reggae carried his image worldwide, Emperor Haile Selassie I<\/strong> of Ethiopia was proclaimed by Rastafari believers in Jamaica as a living messianic figure. The movement\u2019s name itself derives from his pre-coronation title, Ras Tafari Makonnen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Biblical readings that identified Ethiopia with Zion, Marcus Garvey\u2019s prophetic rhetoric, and Selassie\u2019s 1930 coronation fused into a theology of Black dignity and return. Selassie\u2019s 1966 visit to Jamaica\u2014met by enormous crowds\u2014cemented the bond, even as the Emperor himself remained Ethiopian Orthodox and did not claim divinity.<\/p>\n

For Ethiopian and Caribbean audiences alike, the Rastafari connection is a major soft-power and cultural history topic: it shaped music, migration (including the Shashamane land grant narrative), and how Ethiopia is imagined across the African diaspora.<\/p>\n
