Ethiopia\u2019s Afar and Middle Awash regions have produced some of the most important fossils in the study of human origins. Ardi\u2019s anatomy challenged older assumptions that early human ancestors looked like modern chimpanzees. Researchers described a creature that could walk upright on the ground while still climbing trees\u2014pushing bipedalism deeper into the past and underscoring why the Ethiopian Rift remains central to paleoanthropology.<\/p>\n

Together with sites such as Hadar (home of \u201cLucy,\u201d Australopithecus afarensis<\/em>) and the UNESCO-listed Lower Valley of the Awash, Ardi\u2019s discovery reinforced Ethiopia\u2019s status as a global reference point for human evolutionary science.
