{"id":420918,"date":"2022-11-28T15:55:25","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T20:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mereja.com\/index\/?p=420918"},"modified":"2022-11-28T15:55:25","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T20:55:25","slug":"who-renames-monkeypox-as-mpox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.com\/index\/420918","title":{"rendered":"WHO renames monkeypox as \u2018mpox\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) announced  that \u201cmpox\u201d is now the preferred name for monkeypox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth names will be used simultaneously for one year while \u2018monkeypox\u2019 is phased out,\u201d the organization said on Monday in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Monkeypox was named in 1970, more than a decade after the virus that causes the disease was discovered in captive monkeys, the organization said. But monkeypox probably didn\u2019t start in monkeys \u2013 its origin is still unknown \u2013 and the virus can be found in several other kinds of animals. The name was created before WHO published best practices for naming diseases in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In August, WHO encouraged people to propose new names for monkeypox by submitting suggestions to it website. WHO said Monday that the consultation process included experts from medical, scientific, classification and statistics advisory committees \u201cwhich constituted of representatives from government authorities of 45 different countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue of the use of the new name in different languages was extensively discussed.
