One of the few pre-colonial Christian churches in\u00a0Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church has millions of followers, the majority of whom live in Ethiopia.\u00a0It is a founding member of the world council of churches.\u00a0The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is in communion with the\u00a0Eritrean orthodox Tewahdo church, the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Syrian Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Malankara\u00a0Orthodox Syrian Church, having gained autocephaly\u00a0in 1959. The church also keeps most of the country\u2019s political and social history in its old churches and monasteries.<\/p>\n
