The restaurant was founded by three young women, two of them gender-studies graduates. Co-founder Samira Messner put in 500,000 birr of her own money, and it opened in 2015.

Dishes are named after famous Ethiopian women: Taytu Firfir honours Empress Taytu, who helped defeat Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, and Asnakech Shiro honours the singer Asnakech Worku. The menu mixes Ethiopian stews and injera with pizzas, salads and wraps.

By 2019, 30 women had been trained and 23 were employed. Tensaya, a 25-year-old single mother, began as a cleaner and became an assistant chef. Staff also have access to a scholarship fund for night classes.

The business lent 10,000 birr to a single mother to start the injera business that now supplies it, and supported other women outside the restaurant. Co-founder Feteh Asrat said the restaurant could pay its staff and had begun repaying its investor, but the founders still took no salary. Because social enterprise had no separate legal form in Ethiopia, she said, even explaining the model to customers was a challenge.

Sources: Pioneers Post

Temsalet Kitchen in Addis Ababa serves food, hosts events and runs catering, while training vulnerable women to work as its cleaners, cooks, waitresses and managers.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

8

post-282799","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ethiopian-news
https://i0.wp.com/mereja.com/index/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/injera-traditional-platter-ethiopia.jpg?fit=1280%2C1707&ssl=1
["GET
