Ethiopia collected 198.2 billion birr (about $6.9 billion) in taxes in the fiscal year that ended on 7 July 2019, about 22 billion birr more than the year before, Revenue Minister Adanech Abebe said.<\/p>\n

The news site borkena put the total at 198.1 billion birr, an increase of 12 percent, and reported that the ministry still fell short of its target.<\/p>\n

Adanech told reporters the increase came from reforms to tax laws and collection practices, public awareness campaigns and stronger law enforcement, and that bottlenecks inside tax offices had been addressed, New Business Ethiopia reported. She said the country still collects far less than its economy should generate and that tax evasion and avoidance remain a challenge. \u201cWhen we look at the economy of the country, we don\u2019t believe that this is only the revenue the country can collect. It has the potential to collect more revenue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

If the ministry builds on the gains and tackles the main problems, Ethiopia could cover its spending from domestic sources in the near future, the minister said.<\/p>\n

For the 2019\/20 fiscal year that began on 8 July, the budget expects 224 billion birr (about $7.8 billion) from taxes, while the Ministry of Revenue has set itself a higher target of 248 billion birr (about $8.6 billion). Adanech said the ministry would focus on value added tax, excise tax, customs duties and duty-free import privileges, with some regulatory changes.<\/p>\n

Parliament approved a 386.95 billion birr federal budget for 2019\/20 the week before.<\/p>\n
