Ethiopia\u2019s House of Peoples\u2019 Representatives on Monday, 8 July 2019, unanimously approved a federal budget of 386.954 billion birr for the 2019\/20 fiscal year, the year 2012 in the Ethiopian calendar, the state Ethiopian News Agency reported. The budget, submitted by the Council of Ministers and passed in an urgent session, was about 40 billion birr, or roughly 12 percent, larger than the previous year\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Of the total, 109.468 billion birr was set aside for recurrent spending, 130.710 billion birr for capital projects and 140.775 billion birr for subsidies to the nine regional states. Another 6 billion birr was allocated to programmes linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. Reports converted the total to between about $12.4 billion and $13.4 billion, depending on the exchange rate used.<\/p>\n

Answering questions from MPs, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the government had put money aside for labour-intensive projects in agriculture, industry and mining, with a focus on creating jobs for young people, according to 2merkato. He also stressed the need to use local knowledge and to remove barriers to foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n

Abiy Ahmed said 10 billion birr had been allocated to the construction of a monumental library, Adwa Park in Addis Ababa and other similar projects, 2merkato reported.<\/p>\n

Job creation was the theme of the session. On the same day, the prime minister told parliament that Ethiopia planned to send 50,000 workers to the United Arab Emirates in the coming fiscal year as a short-term measure against joblessness.<\/p>\n
