\nA coup attempt in Ethiopia\u2019s Amhara region left dozens dead and triggered a security crackdown as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed tried to keep his reform agenda alive after the deadliest challenge yet to his administration. The dead included Amhara regional president Ambachew Mekonnen and army chief of staff Gen. Seare Mekonnen. Authorities blamed Brig. Gen. Asaminew Tsige and later reported that he had been killed. Arrests followed across Amhara and in the capital while internet limits slowed public information.<\/p>\n
Green\u2019s survey of African news and analysis asked whether the fallout would force Abiy to slow political openings, lean harder on security services, or both. The reform record since 2018 \u2014 prisoner releases, peace with Eritrea, and a gender-balanced cabinet \u2014 had raised expectations that the crisis now threatened.<\/p>\n
