<\/p>\nOn May 24, 2019, police from the Oromia region arrested Tamrat Abera, a journalist with the privately owned Ahadu Radio. He had been assigned to report on a resident\u2019s complaint about a land inheritance dispute in Sendafa, a town in Oromia near Addis Ababa. Mereja reported at the time that the president of the Oromia regional state court had issued a warrant for his arrest on the same day he went to Sendafa.<\/p>\n

Tamrat spent the weekend in jail. Getya Yalew, a reporter for Ethio-online Multimedia, was also arrested on May 26 when he went to visit him at the police station. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that both journalists were freed on May 27, 2019. CPJ said Getya\u2019s release was unconditional, but that Tamrat and three of his Ahadu colleagues faced prosecution in connection with their reporting on alleged misconduct in the courts.<\/p>\n
CPJ reported that an editorial in the Ethiopian newspaper The Reporter said the arrest \u201csent chills throughout the media industry.\u201d After his release, Tamrat gave an interview to Mereja TV about what happened.<\/p>\n
