In May 2019, the Addis Ababa Baladera Council, an advocacy group led by journalist Eskinder Nega, publicly opposed a plan by acting Mayor Takele Uma. The city administration planned to demolish thousands of houses that it said had been built illegally.<\/p>\n

On May 23, 2019, Takele Uma held a press conference on land management in the city. His administration announced plans to demolish houses in five sub-cities that it said were illegal, according to Mereja\u2019s 2019 report. The Baladera Council held its own press conference on May 29, 2019, and Mereja reported that the two sides did not reach common ground.<\/p>\n

Eskinder Nega had been released from prison the year before. According to Borkena, he argued that the city administration had not been elected by residents. He said major decisions such as demolitions should wait until after an election for the city administration. Borkena reported that the demolitions were expected to leave many residents homeless.<\/p>\n
