At the end of April 2019, Amhara state communications officials told local media that clashes between Gumuz and Amhara communities in Benishangul-Gumuz had killed at least 17 people, 11 Amhara and six Gumuz, after a dispute between daily laborers escalated.<\/p>\n\"Communal\n

About 25 houses burned. Federal police and army units deployed while search teams looked for missing bodies. Officials warned the toll could rise.<\/p>\n

What looked like a personal quarrel sat on older land and belonging fights in Metekel and neighboring zones. Within days, retaliatory killings pushed the body count into dozens and foreshadowed years of Metekel horror.<\/p>\n

As conflict accountability archive, the 17-dead wire is an opening chapter, not a closed incident. Abiy Ahmed\u2019s early \u2018peace\u2019 branding did not freeze Benishangul-Gumuz\u2019s fault lines.<\/p>\n
