In April 2019 at Arsi University in Assela, medical interns near graduation protested long hours, little or no pay, weak security around patients, and broken training infrastructure, The Reporter Ethiopia reported.<\/p>\n\"Ethiopia\u2019s\n

Police force met the demonstration; some students were injured. Similar anger had already flared at Jimma. Physician Gelila Sintayehu\u2019s public posts about under-resourced wards and impossible shifts helped push a wider conversation about how Ethiopia treats the people it needs most in public hospitals.<\/p>\n

The Ethiopian government\u2019s reform speeches that year rarely centered intern labor. Hospitals still ran on unpaid exhaustion while the state advertised modernization.<\/p>\n

As health-system reference, the Assela protest belongs beside later doctor and intern actions. A country cannot flood medical schools and then discard graduates into unsafe, unpaid wards without paying for it in care quality and brain drain.<\/p>\n
