{"id":230963,"date":"2018-08-06T12:38:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T16:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mereja.com\/index\/?guid=5abd43cfe665a0be32288b88c755bc93"},"modified":"2019-02-09T13:55:42","modified_gmt":"2019-02-09T18:55:42","slug":"violence-in-ethiopias-somali-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.com\/index\/230963","title":{"rendered":"Somali Region president resigns; calm returns to Jijiga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(VOA) &#8211; Ethiopian soldiers have taken control of major highways, government buildings and the airport in the eastern Somali region after violence in the capital of Jigjiga left at least 29 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting broke out Friday after an apparent rift between local authorities and the central Ethiopian government.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear exactly what led to the violence. A senior official with the region&#8217;s Somali People&#8217;s Democratic Party, Khadar Abdi Ismail, tells VOA the federal forces are responsible for the deaths.<\/p>\n<p>He blames the violence on what he calls public anger over &#8220;the illegal entry of the dangerously armed troops&#8221; into the city. Ismail says non-Somali ethnic communities were targeted, shops looted, buildings burned and churches destroyed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Churches being burnt by local government forces in Eastern Ethiopia, in Jijiga town.
