The Ethiopia-Eritrea peace deal: what’s on the cards?

Post by Revelations » 13 Jul 2018, 10:30

JULY 12, 2018 MARTIN PLAUT

This is what I hear unofficially.

1. Eritrean high level political and public delegations will travel to Tigrai and Afar regional states at the end of this month

2. Air transport between Asmara and Addis Ababa will start at the end of August

3. Bus transport between Addis and Asmara, between Asmara and Mekelle will start early August

4. Ethiopian artists will present a music festival in Asmara on the eve of 2011 (in Geez calendar)

5. Eritrean artists will present their music festival in Addis, Jimma, Hawassa, Mekele and Bahirdar (date will be announced soon)

6. Eritrea will send two team of Ashenda to Mekelle and Axum

7. Port of Assab will be open for Ethiopia, with a fair tax, at the end of September 2018 or in the early October

8. No visas will be required to enter Eritrea from Ethiopia starting the end of September 2018

9. Eritrea will open an embassy in Addis Ababa in early September 2018, and Consulate office in Mekelle, Bahirdar and Jimma

10. Eritrea will release all prisoners including top war prisoners and pilots

11. In the next 5 years Eritrea will be connected with Ethiopia by railway via Massawa- Asmara-Mekelle-Semera-Adama-Addis (a further study will begin soon).

Note: since I posted this information I have had some clarifcation.

The reference in 10. to prisoners relates to Ethiopian prisoners held in Eritrea not all prisoners in Eritrea. Not clear if Ethiopia has any Eritrean prisoners left over from the 1998 – 2000 border war, but unlikely.

tarik

I have been advising you to learn to love yourself and accept your roots. You wouldn't been in this pain at this moment if you had heeded my kind advice. There's no connection to be made past those that are closest to Eritrea in so many ways. The rest of us further south from you and we won't be comfortable if anyone professes love to us and hate to their immediate neighbors. This is the new reality staring you down.

Dishonest of you, to call the 1 who'se the object of hate from his neighbours, as the hater.

If you're faraway as you say & don't know how much our neighbours hated/hate us, then I suggested you keep quiet & read some history books.

Plus this days, all Ethiopians are aware of, who'se driven by hate & who'se not- after 27 years of iron fisted weyane rule.

What were you expecting? To bypass Tigray and have friendship with the rest of Ethiopia? It's not going to happen. Make peace with your nearest kin/neighbors first and all will be well with the rest of us. ከራሱ የተጣላ ለሌላ ሰው ዘመድ አይሆንም::

I don't expect any better from you. Just yesterday you told us to hate Djibouti for charging us high port fees. And you were wishing bad things to happen to them. How does your mind work? If Djibouti wants to comeback to Ethiopia and reintegrate, it will be the easiest thing to do for them. We've not fought wars with them to stay with us. That land was leased for 100 years to the French. Had Ethiopia been at peace and strong at the time, they could have easily comeback. They are our brothers and sisters. Best of luck to them. And their port will be used by Ethiopia for a long time to come.

ወይ ጉድ! ምነው ቢቢሲ እንግዳችንን እንደዚህ አብጠለጠለብን?!
'Split personality'

Mr Isaias went on to "personalise power and having personalised power he abused it to the maximum", former Eritrean ambassador Mr Andebrhan says.

He speaks about the president as if he has a split personality. On the one hand there is the inspirational leader and then there is the "dark and brutal" side.

So how is this squared with the jovial scenes when Mr Isaias met the Ethiopian prime minister?

"He was acting. Most dictators are good actors and he's able to [deleted] people in," Mr Andebrhan says.

While seasoned observers of Eritrea welcome the progress towards peace with Ethiopia, there are those who remain sceptical that he will bring change at home.

Many what to know about the thousands imprisoned before they can be optimistic about the future of the country.

When one thinks and remembers that Egypt and Syria, were united under their leaders temporary needs, but things not only fell apart, but went the opposite direction when Sadat came to power.

Heck even Ziad Barre and Mengistu were going to establish united socialist front with yemen's help when one of the legs of each was broken already.

Anything that is not based on what broke cannot be long term or solid.

Forget Tigray. What do you think the Afar calculus is? They have already hinted. They even reminded PM Abiy that they were then attacked by Italians in front and Hatse Menelik from the back. Sultan Ali Mirah led rebellion also had this during Hatse Haileslassie. He could not take Assab and add it to Wollo which would have been smartest thing to do. Derg tried but last minute kind of Assab separate admin.

If it did not work for Hatse Haileslassie the same method the same people the same situation is very unlikely to work today.
