Q & A
There are countries that have done none, with more opportunities. But, Eritrea with its own resources is doing a lot on development. I am excited because I’m witnessing the real Eritrea, not the Eritrea on Social Media.

A joint high-level UN-AU delegation, led by Deputy Secretary General Ms. Amina Mohammed, made a two-day work visit as part of a series of visits to neighboring countries of the Horn. During its stay the high-level delegation met with the President, the Ministers of Justice, National Development, Information, Labor and Social Welfare and the President of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW). The delegation further, held an interactive session with young Eritrean professionals. The delegation visited several projects including; Mislam Dam, the Nefasit-Dekemhare-Serha road that is under construction and more. I spoke, to both the heads of the UN and AU delegation. Read today’s Q&A, as we give you a glimpse of their stay and experience in Eritrea in their own words.

Deputy Secretary General, Ms. Amina Mohammed

Welcome to Eritrea! Your impressions and thoughts, on your mission to Eritrea…

We arrived yesterday on a joint solidarity mission for peace, security and development. We went straight to the filed. We experienced the investments that Eritrea is making in infrastructure; we visited the road that connects to Ethiopia. We also saw a multi-purpose dam, which for us is really important to witness how Eritrea has focused on water and is actually putting its own investment in it. Most exciting about that was seeing young Eritreans involved: engineers from Eritrea, but also from the diaspora. We ended up in a dairy farm where we saw entrepreneurship of a woman and her family producing products equal to global standards.

You have also met with the Eritrean leadership. How was it to actually speak with the ministers and the President himself?

We met with the ministers and saw that they are very focused on the priorities of this country; a country that has come out of war into peace. And that is actually what we wanted to hear because that is what we need to support. We had an inspiring discussion with the President who reiterated what has been learned from a journey –through war and isolation into peace and the importance of keeping the peace not just for Eritrea but the regional integration for the Horn of Africa and the rest of Africa.

You’ve had a chance to meet the President of NUEW and had a round table discussion with young professionals over traditional Bun! How was it?

And what a better note to come and speak with young people and the Eritrean women who have been on the forefront in the struggle for freedom, and, now, in the fight for sustainable development! We realized the challenge of finding a seamless transition from one generation to another; having the young people at the front with their vision, energy and capacities and support them to strengthen their capacities and make sure that they are taught of what Eritrea has done and what it can do both for Africa and for the globe itself.

You are the second high level delegation of the UN visiting Eritrea within a time frame of a month. What is the reason behind this?

The fact that now Eritrea is engaging with the world is a big thing. It has been in isolation for a long time. We know that there are remaining challenges but if we want to see Eritrea proceed then we have to start understanding the country’s priorities. We need to know where the country is coming from and where it would like to go and together see how we can support that. The UN has been in Eritrea for a long time and intends to stay as long as it can. There are many different aspects of the UN that the government is speaking with now to see how we can consolidate that partnership. That is what we’re bringing in terms of the system, which is pretty big.

And if you may, Mrs. Deputy Secretary General, what will your role be in the process you just mentioned?

For me this is about advocacy for the things that Eritrea is doing well. To amplify that so that people can see and feel encouraged by the stability that is being created in the political will to have peace as a future not just for Eritrea but the region as well. Moreover, it will be also about addressing the challenges. What more challenges and gaps have we got? Whether it is in development or human rights, all of that needs to be addressed if one is to be an equal member of the global community. And so I see this as the first of many conversations and activities for the future. We are hearing from young people who tell us what they would like and how they’d like to be part of the networks that are regional and global… so we’ll need more, not us giving you prescriptions, but you telling us what you need. That will help us find solutions together.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything you’d like to put on an ending note?

Yes. I think there are three things that Eritrea should share with the world. The first is what we saw and felt as well, your unity. There aren’t many countries that are as unified as you are and I think that the next generation should share this value with young generations across the border. The second trait is how the government has approached equality. I think in many countries inequality is the root-cause of destructions that we see. And last, whatever Eritrea has gained as a dividend of its past must be carried on as a dividend for peace in the future; and that is based on gender equality. You have it in many places. Don’t take it for granted and you, the young people, must hold on to it tight as well.

Mrs. BENITA DIOP, AU special envoy on Women, peace and security

What we have said as women for peace, security and development from both the AU and the UN was listen to the women in Eritrea and the leadership. And what we found is something that we need to echo because we need to change the narrative. I think here we have seen a country that has been resilient despite challenges. A country that has been striving to show the world that it has been working to develop its own economy. A country that has put women as part of its undertakings for development. Speaking with the Head of State of Eritrea we realized that this is normal; Eritrean women fought for liberation and now are on the field working on agriculture and much more in the fight for development.

We at the AU have put in place, along with the UN, programs for young people to connect so that they share their experience and accelerate and innovate. So it will be important to involve young Eritreans as well.

I have been very happy about my visit to Eritrea. I will take the message to the AU but also to my sisters in the African Women’s movement. I have actually been to Eritrea during the border war. I, then, met with Mrs. Luul Ghebreab and visited the war field. We visited the displaced camps and young men and women fighting in the war. The disaster of war was heavy but we saw women who stood next to their brothers to defend their nation. We appreciated what the young women were selflessly doing back then; nevertheless, we really hoped for peace. And today, I comeback at a time when Eritrea and Ethiopia have made peace I am glad to have been here on this joint mission.

I have been in good contacts with several Eritrean women having had a chance to work with them in different contexts. The intergenerational cooperation of the youth and the old working together to build Eritrea is an example for us to learn from.

The Dahlak cisterns

Written by Tekleweyni Negassi

http://www.shabait.com/about-eritrea/hi ... k-cisterns

About Eritrea - History & Culture

When you set foot on the Dahlak Islands, the first thing that strikes your mind is how people manage to survive there.

The Dahlak Islands are an archipelago or composed of many small islands. They are located around 50kms away from the east of Massawa. Dahlak Kebir is the largest island of the Red Sea. It is a coral reef island which is almost a plane area and barely possesses large geological features such as mountains, valleys, gorges…etc. Besides, there is a very little annual rainfall and throughout the year Dahlak has harsh tropical climate, as a result a limited number of species of shrubs and grass grow in this area. It is used as a pastureland for camels, goats and also to a few gazelles. Maybe, all this is the reason why they call it ‘Dahlak’. Based on preliminary information, the name ‘Dahlak’ is derived from ‘Dar Halak’ an Arabic word, meaning ‘The horrible Land‘. There is no doubt, the name suits the island very well.

However, when you further explore around, you simply notice various settlements, ruins, graves, cisterns and so many other traces of civilization. These traces belong to different periods of time in history, which extend from the ancient Adulite period until the recent historical sites such as Nakura. But one can only wonder as how such civilizations flourished throughout history despite the harsh and waterless environment. It was known that, almost all of the civilizations and traces of humankind were based alongside water resources such. So how can societies live in such environment for more than two thousand years? The answer lays on the view; some may suggest that trade was based on the geographical strategy and some say it was the tortoise shells and pearl fishing, which Dahlak is best known for. But the basic thing is the water preservation mechanisms which enables the people to survive and those are the cisterns.

The cisterns in the Dahlak Island are found in a great number and people throughout history depended on these cisterns for their prosperous civilizations. The locals are attributes to the tradition of construction of wells and cisterns, which once belonged to the Farsi or Persians. The Persians had control and influence in the southern part of the Red Sea coasts and Islands, in different periods of time. Therefore, the historical accounts regarding the Farsi tradition still remain.

According to the oral tradition of the locals, there were 365 cisterns in Dahlak, meant to provide water everyday throughout the whole year. In the 17th C. AD a Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi wrote about Dahlak and mentioned that there were 600 households, each of them having their own cisterns in the village. However, a century later the British, James Bruce, stated that he had seen 360 cisterns at the village. Later on, at the second half of 20th C.

Puglisi recordedz 70 cisterns at the same village. Today the ruined settlements and the surviving villages have minimally ten cisterns and wells around, and in many cases the number of cisterns exceeds the number of households. It is difficult to identify the number of cisterns, as many of them are buried with silt and almost covered by the vegetation, so it is not possible to estimate the total number of cisterns. Either way Dahlak was well known for the abundance of cisterns and availability of fresh water. According to historical accounts, Dahlak was the source of fresh water for coastal settlements such as Massawa until the 1870’s and also for merchants and travelers of the Red Sea.

As the numbers of the cisterns differ from place to place, so does their structure and construction techniques. The most common are the wells that are carved in the compact rocky limestone or coral reefs of Dahlak with a cylindrical shape, with a diameter of 1 meter and depth of 4 – 20 meters. The depth varies upon the surface elevation, in which on the higher elevations it reaches to 20 meters and on the lower elevations below sea level.

This depth allows the wells to reach the table water. During the rainy seasons, the wells are filled with rain water through flooding. The salty water retreats and fresh water occupies the space, as it’s denser than the fresh water.

However, during the dry seasons, the salty table water conquers the wells again. These kinds of wells are locally known as Sari and they are found abundantly everywhere in the current villages and ruined settlements. Though, they are functioning and serving the people, many of them are also either deposited or filled with silt or they are out of water. The water from these kinds of wells are too salty, except during the few rainy seasons. So the locals used it for their animals and for washing their house hold utensils.

Other kinds of water reservoirs are the cisterns, found in a great number in most of the current villages and ruined settlements of the Dahlak Island. These cisterns were usually constructed along the small rifts and channels of the Island for the purpose of being filled with rain water. The rainwater flows naturally from the area around, sometimes from canals carved in the rocks to facilitate the passage of the water.

Basically, there are three types of cisterns in regard to their construction techniques. The most common cisterns have a circle opening; most of them are enclosed by a ring shaped wall not more than 30 c.ms long, and usually with a diameter of 1m. The inner parts of the cisterns have a pot-like oval shape. Most of the time, it measures up to 8m in diameter and has a depth of 2 - 4ms. They are carved in a compact rocky limestone and some have a wall constructed with coral stones, which are heavily plastered with strong grey mortar inside in order to prevent leakage. In many cases, there are canals as long as 40 m, carved to make a passage to the cisterns. Such cisterns are also locally called Sari and they provide drinking water. Most of these cisterns are found in the village of Dahlak Kebir and they are still in use.

The second types of cisterns, are found in a few villages and ruined settlements, locally known as Sanda. These types of cisterns are located alongside the little gorges in order to get the flowing rain water. They have a square opening without any enclosure; in addition, they are carved through the rocky limestone, for a depth of 2 - 4m. They have a diameter of 1m and are plastered with grey mortar.

The third type are only found at the village of Dahlak Kebir, and they are very few in number. These cisterns are also the largest ones; they have a rectangular plan with an approximate width of 15 x 5m, and they have a depth not more than 4 meters. Some of them have pillars inside to support the ceiling above which is built by coral stones and tampered with locally made grey mortar. One of the well-known cisterns among these, is the Sultan cistern. It has a rectangular plan of 8mx4m and has an arc designed ceiling. It is plastered very well with grey mortar and also has a 10m canal towards it. Locals believe that it was built by the sultanates and was used exclusively by the sultan’s household.

As mentioned above, the Dahlak cisterns are marvelous and reflecit outstanding structures, which show how people can survive by harnessing their environment. They also have a great potential for being selected in the world heritage list, as they represent a master piece for human creative genius and exceptional testimony of different past civilizations in Dahlak and Eritrea.

Eritrea has shown its commitment to clean energy, through using smokeless stoves; although its emission rate to the global pollution is insignificant. The way forward for Eritrea is to harness renewable energy, from solar, wind & geothermal.

Eritrea has the second highest average solar energy potential, on the planet. Another good news is the cost for solar energy is declining & in the near future, renewables will be cheaper than fossil fuels. Eritrea can develop without compromising its land, water & sky.

Pilot projects led by E-tech demonstrate the capacity to design, size & install big plants is already in Eritrea. A 50 MW Solar-energy project is about to kick-off, & to instigate other initiatives. Envisioning, Battery & Panel manufacturing plants is timely.

The future of Geothermal energy is also bright, in Eritrea. The country is situated in a volcanic area, with a potential of generating low cost energy. Materializing it will depend on further studies & tests around Asmara-Massawa highway, Zula Bay & Danakil.

Wind energy, is another resource Eritrea is endowed with. This was partly used during Italian times, satisfactorily studied after independence & tested with successful pilot project around Assab. Right investment in this & other potentials, will make us an energy abundant country.

Apart from the development of Nuclear energy, some studies don't exclude the potential of hydro-power in Eritrea. According to those studies, the Red-Sea & the Danakil Depression can do magic in creating hydropower & greenery in the desert. https://iicbe.org/upload/3632C714076.pdf

Dr Abiy’s was right last year about need for hotels. The more positive news comes the flood gates will open with tourists...
Build hotels everywhere along the coast mainly and of course the capital city...
The tourists income has huge potential to open a lot of services jobs for the young people.

Painting depicting the Asmara - Massawa Cableway. The cableway (or "ropeway") that was completed in 1937, ran 71.8 km from the south end of Asmara until the city port of Massawa.

Danakali hopes to secure Eritrean potash JV financing and move to Colluli project execution

It plans to spend $1.8 million in the December quarter as it advances its Colluli Potash Project in the now-peaceful African country Eritrea in partnership with the government.

The 200-year proposed potash mine is co-owned with the Eritrean government

Danakali spent $674,000 in the September 2019 financial quarter after raising $502,000 from investors who exercised their options.
• The Western Australian company ended September 2019 with 'sufficient working capital' of $4.9 million.
• Perth-based Danakali hopes to advance Colluli project in Eritrea in the December 2019 quarter and has budgeted $1.8 million for its efforts.
• A $1.4 million sum to go towards its 50:50 project JV with the Eritrean government, as the partners prioritise the project to finalise financing and move to project execution.

Danakali Ltd (ASX:DNK) (LON:DNK) (OTCMKTS:SBMSF) (OTCMKTS:DNKLY) is continuing to target 2019 for a start to project execution at its 200-year Colluli Potash Project in the East African country of Eritrea.

The multi-listed Western Australian company is ready to execute an engineering, procurement and construction contract with DRA Global in the country which borders its now friendly neighbour Ethiopia and the Red Sea.

A March 2020 quarter start date is being targeted for mining services contracting at Danakali’s flagship East African project Colluli.

About Colluli project

Colluli has a very large ore reserve estimate of 1.1 billion tonnes grading 10.5% potassium oxide for 203 million tonnes of contained SOP equivalent.

The project is solely owned by the Colluli Mining Share Company (CMSC), a 50:50 joint venture between Danakali and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO).

EuroChem has agreed to take, pay, market and distribute up to 100%, or a minimum of 87% at CMSC’s option, of the partners’ Colluli Module I SOP production at the project for at least 10 years.

December quarter outcomes

Colluli owner CSMC’s future project execution team is to include personnel from multinational professional services company Turner & Townsend, with an appointment expected in the December 2019 quarter.

CSMC has prepared a mine development notice that it is expecting to send off this quarter to the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The CSMC parties have a high-value US$200 million senior debt facility they are progressing through well-advanced documentation stages they expect to wrap up this quarter before they move to then executing the facility.

A US$42 million credit approval from Afreximbank has been received by the JV, to back the building of an ISI power plant at Colluli.

‘Strong engagement’ on financing

Danakali posted its quarterly results to market today and said significant progress was being made on the project’s other financing requirements as
strong engagement and detailed negotiations with potential strategic partners
took place.

The Perth company wrote,
Danakali and CMSC are working with EPCM provider DRA Global and owner’s team support Turner & Townsend (multinational professional services company) to ensure that an efficient start-up can be achieved once project financing is confirmed.

Danakali project director Tony Harrington is based in (the Eritrean capital city) Asmara to finalise preparations.

Once sufficient funding has been achieved, the owner’s team and DRA Global will commence project execution.
‘Sufficient working capital’

Danakali ended September 2019 $4.9 million and said today the cash holding was
considered sufficient working capital to take the company through to commencement of project execution.
The company plans to spend $1.8 million in the December 2019 quarter, directing $1.4 million to the Colluli JV and its planned work program.

Inflection points

Dankali is expecting the following outcomes this quarter:

* CSMC will finalise is senior debt documentation.
* Discussions with investors will allow the JV to meet its project financing requirements.
* CSMC will submit its notice of mine development for Colluli to the Eritrean government.
* Turner & Townsend will be appointed and start project execution for EPCM phases I and II.
* Other key staffers will be hired.
* Additional in-country readiness activities will take place.

Dr Z

The idea of flooding the danakil depression from Red Sea is huge hydro power potential not just for Eritrea for the whole region.
The other big positive about it is there are good selling point for investors to finance this huge project that could cost 5-10 billion dollars.
1. As the world is concerned about global warming and sea level rising, this project comes to the rescue by taking water away from the sea.
2. As Denakil depression is hot the water will evaporate and come down as a rain in the Horn Africa and potential countries across the Red Sea. Ethiopia could be biggest beneficiary of the rain and that would be good news for Nile upstream countries of Sudan and Egypt.
3. The hydro power potential huge up 10,000 MW of power beyond the needs of Eritrea and can be sold at a fair price to whoever needs it. The biggest advantage would come the cheap power would attract heavy industries of steel, aluminum, copper, gold smelters that consume huge power to smelter or remelt the minerals. And that bring a supply chain for those industries of cars production, beer soda food can, wiring,... supply chain would be huge and you taking millions of jobs that come with it that there are not enough Eritrean so expatriates will be required.
This is 🤗 yug

* Discussions with investors will allow the JV to meet its project financing requirements.
* CSMC will submit its notice of mine development for Colluli to the Eritrean government.
* Turner & Townsend will be appointed and start project execution for EPCM phases I and II.
* Other key staffers will be hired.
* Additional in-country readiness activities will take place.
  why the advertise when Every body knows that regardless what is discovered in Eritrea, nothing will change for the masses.

I remember Eritreans were delighted for the discovery of gold in Bisha. But once they realized it is not their belonging, they don't seem to give a crap.... Where is the revenue of the mining by the way ? 😏 They are probably stashed in Hong kong or Shanghai or Kaula lampur banks.

ሳላ ብሻ ልበይ ትሓጉሻ ይብሃል ነይሩ.... ሕጂ እንታይ እብሃል ኣሎ.

Eritrea, in some respects, was the way I had dreamed all of Africa might be one fine day. Never in my life, had I felt a greater sense of community on a national scale. Nor had I seen a place, with such wide-open arms and so generous a heart.

Got ya, brother!
