The European Union is accelerating its engagement with Somalia through increased high-level visits in a bid to gain access to Somalia's abundant untapped natural resources, there has been a growing understanding in the EU Parliament's headquarters that the EU needs Somalia much more than Somalia needs the EU, because Somalia is awash in critical minerals that are essential to the EU economy and national security.

Securing access to Somalia’s natural resources is an existential imperative for both the European Union and the United States.

Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi Engages Norwegian Delegation to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation

November 17, 2024

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi received in his office a high-level Norwegian delegation led by Mr. Einar Rystad, Norway’s Envoy to Somalia, for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional and global priorities.

During the meeting, the foreign Minister underscored Somalia’s steadfast commitment to fostering peace, stability, and development across the Horn of Africa. He highlighted recent milestones in Somalia’s constitutional reforms and democratization process, including parliamentary approval of the National Election and Boundaries Commission, which marks a significant step toward institutionalizing democratic governance. The Norwegian delegation lauded these achievements, praising Somalia’s resilience and dedication to state-building amidst challenges.

The dialogue also centered on Somalia’s strategic vision for the post-ATMIS era as the country prepares to assume full responsibility for its national security. Minister Fiqi elaborated on ongoing initiatives to professionalize Somali security forces and sustain counter-terrorism efforts, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships in supporting these goals.

Somalia’s staunch opposition to the illegal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also raised, through which Ethiopia seeks to annex Somali territories. Minister Fiqi reaffirmed Somalia’s unequivocal commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to uphold principles of the country’s sovereignty and international law.

This engagement reflects the evolving partnership between Somalia and Norway, grounded in mutual interests and shared values, and underscores their collective determination to address regional challenges and advance sustainable peace and stability.

War-torn Ethiopia, which is teetering on the verge of collapse and disintegration into more than eighty five independent countries does not have the capability to annex Somali territories.

Saudi-Djibouti committee holds 6th session in Riyadh to boost trade ties

November 19, 2024

RIYADH: Logistical, trade, and investment ties between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti are set to grow stronger following the sixth session of their joint committee, held in Riyadh on Nov. 18.

The meeting was chaired by Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, Saleh Al-Jasser, and Djibouti’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

In his opening remarks, Al-Jasser emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, noting that the discussions were just the beginning of efforts to further enhance trade and investment across vital sectors, particularly logistics.

He highlighted the significant progress in bilateral trade, which reached approximately SR7 billion ($1.86 billion) in 2023, marking an important step toward sustainable growth and stronger economic ties between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti.

Al-Jasser pointed out that these figures serve as a foundation for deepening trade cooperation, noting that the previous session of the joint committee had already laid the groundwork for expanded collaboration.

The continued growth of trade between the two countries is reflected in the ongoing efforts to build more robust economic partnerships.

Earlier in August, the two nations agreed to launch a maritime initiative to strengthen trade connections. This initiative includes the establishment of new shipping lines designed to boost connectivity with East African markets, which serve a consumer base of around 500 million people.

A centerpiece of the partnership is the Saudi Logistics City, planned for development within Djibouti's Free Zone. This ambitious project, formalized through a contract signed in June, aims to facilitate the export of Saudi products to East Africa and further strengthen economic relations. The 92-year agreement, which covers an initial 120,000 sq. meters, is expected to have a transformative impact on both countries’ economies, fostering long-term growth and collaboration.

The ongoing efforts between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti are poised to significantly enhance bilateral trade, investment, and regional connectivity, marking a promising chapter in their economic partnership.
