I have never seen such an ugly and badly designed dysfunctional engineering contraption in my life! It is called Kludge!!!

Clumsy but workarounds and improvements are possible.(AA needs mass transit systems)
removing level crossing - putting train tracks underground and building bridges for vehicles and pedestrians.
bring in private companies to run the network,

Dismantling the network for the sake of corridor development (ለብልጭልጭ ስራ) is a waste of huge sums of money.

BTW, is the PM also AA mayor,town planner and landscape architect?


This train network started small like the one in AA.

ADDIS ABABA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- For the past 15 years, Natnael Nigussie has been operating a small business, selling female cosmetics and clothing, in a bustling area called Legehar at the heart of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

His daily routine started with a two-hour drive through the chaotic morning rush to reach his small shop from his home in the eastern suburb of the city.

Nigussie beamed with joy as he described his newfound liberation from the nightmare of traffic jams and the time-saving benefits of the Addis Ababa Light Rail Train (AALRT), which was put into operation in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of people are travelling with the light rail every day from 39 stations across the city.

"After I started commuting on the light rail, going to the city center is no longer a nightmare of traffic jams. Time is the lifeblood of my business," said the 32-year-old with a smile. "Thanks to the light rail, I spend less than half the time commuting to Legehar, where my shop is located. It has been a game-changer for me."


Built by China Railway Engineering Corporation, the 34-km light railway was introduced to Addis Ababa in September 2015. The city has an estimated 5 million residents and is also home to the headquarters of the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

Binyam Beyene, also a resident in Addis Ababa who commutes by the light rail in his daily endeavors, spoke highly of the light rail for its efficient and cost-effective transport service.

"You can imagine one has to pay several hundred (Ethiopian) birr fetching a ride or other transportation services, while the light rail only costs 20 or less birr from one corner of the city to another," he said.

Beyene also singled out the light rail's key role in championing low-carbon transportation in Ethiopia as well as its lower noise and air pollution levels.

The East African country spent 6 billion U.S. dollars on fuel imports in 2023, more than half of which went to fueling vehicles, according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics. Additionally, pollution levels in city centers due to these vehicles are reportedly off the charts.

right on :!: this is a continuation of the political and propaganda project that is being waged by the self loathing imbecile. the billions of birr they wasted for the face lift of Bole area could have used to correct, extend and improve this transit system. but their intention is not development it is wining the propaganda war. remember Abiy was talking to the Egyptians while trashing the GERD, to the point having the engineer, that was standing firm assassinated, but later on he made a U-TURN when he realized the people reaction was not what he expected.

ወያኔ ያጨማለቀውን ኦነግ ጭምልቅልቁን ያወጣዋል እንበል ይሆን? What would be the salvage value of TPLF's rail way? How long has been this rail system in service? Did it return the money invested in it? Is this the right time to do such an undertaking? Did Addis Ababa su.cking the national resource of raise its own fund? If Addis Ababa is su.cking the resources of the country, this is unacceptable.

Was the light rail project a mistake? Yes, it was a mistake. Many of us probably voiced our disapproval then. But for sure Horus was cheering for it thinking Ethiopia was developing and prospering. Then if you ask why he is cheering for the demolition of this infrastructure this time can only be explained by his lack of knowledge and desire for superficial and temporary decorations.

Now with all seriousness, if this satan Mamo Killo goes ahead with demolition of this infrastructure, then expect to waste three trillion Birr based on the 33 billion Birr spent on laying tiles for sidewalks without any drainage system in the current corridor pet project.

The Addis Lightrail is not uglier than any railway. It's not built for beauty. It's built for use.
I can send you videos of the light rails in Toronto, Waterloo, Concord and the one being built in Mississauga cities of Ontario, Canada. They look the same. And the public accepts how they look.

Agreed.

1. The Addis Abeba surface rail system otherwise known as Addis Lightrail should operate as a private transportation business. Increase the ticket prices annually so as to cover its operational
costs and make some profits at 2-4% profit which will go to pay its loan borrowed to build it.

2. Build level crossings for cars and pedestrians equipped with traffic lights

3. Make roads pass under bridges where the railway is above ground.

5. One lane of road on opposite sides of the railway can be built for cars where exists enough land.

4. Increase diversity of the workforce. 90% of its engineers and technicians are Christian males. Only 5% are Muslim and 5% female technicians and engineers.

ከተማውን ሁለት ሰንጥቆ የሚሄደው የባቡር ሃዲድ በቅጡ ሳይጠና በይድረስ በይድረስ በጥድፊያ እንደተሰራ አውቃለሁ። እንዲያውም መስቀል አደባባይን በድልድልይ ተንጠልጥሎ የሚያቋርጠው ሃዲድ እንዲሰራ ከመወሰኑ በፊት፣ በምድር ውስጥ የሚሄድ የንድፍ አማራጭ ቀርቦ ነበር። ወስፌዋ ወያኔ የምትሰርቀው ገንዘብ ሲቀጭጭባት፣ የመሬት ውስጥ አማራጩን ወርውራ ጣለችው።

አሁን ባለበት ሁኔታ አስቀሚና ብዙ አደጋ የሚያስከትል መሆኑ ምንም ጥያቄ የለውም። መለወጡምንም እደግፋለሁ። ሆኖም ሃዲድ ወደ መሬት ውስጥ በአሁኑ ሰዓት መቅበር የቅንጦት ነው። በተለይ ሜዳ ላይ ያለው መንገድ በጎርፍ እየተጥለቀለቀ ባለበት ጊዜ፣ ወደ መሬት ውስጥ ጉድጓድ መቆፈር የባሰ ጥፋት ያመጣል። መሬት ውስጥ ያለ የህዝብ ማመላለሻ ደግሞ ብዙ ተያያዥ ቴክኖሎጂ ይፈልጋል። አሁን እንዳለችው ትራም፣ መብራት በጠፋ ቁጥር ተሳፋሪዎችን እንደ ሰርዲን አሽጎ መተው አይቻልም፣ ኢቫክዌሽን ሲስተም ይፈልጋል፣ አየር መቆጣጠሪያ ያስፈልጋል።

የባሰ አስቀያሚ ትራም ለማየት ሺካጎን ወይንም ኒውዮርክ 125th, 242nd streets ና ስፓይደር ማን-2 ን ማየት ነው።

How many rich western cities have ugly train lines? Why have they kept them for decades? Do they not want to look at shiny lights? I have been to many western cities, and I don't remember seeing a beautiful train line. I thought railways are measured on punctuality, effectiveness and efficiency - not beauty.

I agree with you that it should not be demolished at this time. But my reason is not for the 475 million dollars already spent on it, but because the cost of demolishing it will be in trillions of Birr. There are other priorities that need to be executed. Especially making the trains run at full capacity. Right now, only 25% of the trains are operational as many suggest. This is unacceptable.

The economics and aesthetics of removing the the Addis light rail ....

economics - 50% the cars are broken and out of operation, a mass of steel costing to store it, fixing these 20 cars and their spare parts runs into millions of USD, the system is so inefficient and unpopular it brings in revenue that does not pay for a fraction of its operating cost. The government pays for its operation- it is parasite project. In economics, this called throwing out good money after a bad investment. The city must absorb its its cost so far and cancel the pro - ject to save continued bleeding. Demolish the structure reuse the cement and steel and sell of the cars, Build beautiful roads with amazing corridors in its place.

Aesthetics - this m. assive kludge is an eye sore, ugly, disrupting an orderly flow human and auto traffic ... if and when Addis Abeba gets enough money it should build a modern smart subway system in the future when Addis population hits about 10 million. At this point what Addis needs is 4, 5 lane efficient good looking roads, wide street, amazing walkways and in fact dominant culture of walking and bicycling ---- shared rides etc.

OLF-PP Orommuma thug is simply a kid in a candy store. Thug Abiy Ahmed is throwing cash in the trash. This is a no brainer, a poor country like Ethiopia's priority is to optimally use its meagre resources. Kid Orommuma is either busy for a beauty contsest against TPLF ( to say Orommuma is smart, but it ain't Orommuma that had the idea of light rail) or Orommuma is trying to decorate its future Repblic of Oromia at the expense of other regions - just like he invaded Amhara region under the pretext of being PM of Ethiopia while he truly is not.

- ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ሲሚንቶን እንዴት ነው አፍርሰህ እንደገና የምትጠቀምበት? አርማታ ማለትህ ከሆነ፣ ተፈጭቶ ለኮረትነት ይጠቅም ይሆናል እንጂ ተመልሶ እንደ ሲሚንቶ አይለወስም።

- ‘ቆንጆ መንገድ በኮርዶር’ ምን ማለት ነው? ቁርጥ ስጋ በአዋዜ?

- የከተማ ውስጥ መንገድን ማስፋት ወይንም ወደ 4-5 lane መለወጥ የትራፊክን ችግር አይቀንስም፣ ይልቁንም እንዲያውም ችግሩን ያብሰዋል።

absolutely right :!: . inferiority complex and their effort to disprove the perception and rumor about their incapability to rule Ethiopia is the drive behind it. look this Horus guy how he brags ignoring the suffering of hundreds of millions of our people where over 30 million of them are fed by donors, just because his belly is full and probably lives a good life.
