Gallas and Kuwait have signed a Memorandum of Understanding MOU for 🇪🇹 to send 60,000 Gurage listro maids to Kuwait

Addis Ababa May 27/2024 Ethiopia and Kuwait have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to send 60,000 Gurage listro maids to Kuwait.

Minister of Labor and Skills Muferiat Kamil and Kuwaiti Ambassador to Ethiopia, Nayef Al-Otaibi signed the agreement in the presence of officials from both sides.

The agreement would have a significant role for Gurage listro women to have maid job access legally in a manner that safeguards their rights and benfits in Kuwait.

Police rescue 17 Gurage Listros being smuggled in Mombasa

They entered into the country through the Moyale border and were headed to South Africa

• They had reportedly moved from Ethiopia through the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Moyale and were allegedly headed to South Africa when they were intercepted.

• It is not clear how they managed to evade police roadblocks on the main highways.

Detectives have arrested a driver and his turnboy found transporting 17 Ethiopians being smuggled out of the country.

The group was intercepted by police from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) at Makupa Bridge in Mombasa.

They had reportedly moved from Ethiopia through the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Moyale and were allegedly headed to South Africa when they were intercepted.

It is not clear how they managed to evade police roadblocks on the main highways.

Acting on intelligence, the sleuths laid a trap at Makupa Bridge, where they intercepted the lorry carrying them.

Upon opening its carriage, 17 men of Ethiopian origin were rescued and escorted to Makupa police station. The driver and his turnboy were also taken by the police.

The group told police they were on transit to South Africa and had crossed into Kenya with the assistance of smugglers.

Police said they are looking for the smugglers.

According to police, most of those arrested previously said they use the Moyale route as they head to South Africa and Middle East oblivious of the dangers ahead.

Officials from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit are conducting joint operations to deal with human smuggling.

What is puzzling is how the immigrants evade many police roadblocks mounted from the Moyale border to Nairobi because they travel in groups.

There are more than 20 roadblocks on the stretch.

Most of those nabbed are usually repatriated to their country, police and immigration officials say.

Many are being held in various police stations pending their repatriation.

A boat carrying 260 Ethiopian migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, leaving at least 49 dead and 140 missing

Jun 11, 2024

A boat carrying Ethiopian migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, leaving at least 49 Ethiopians dead and 140 missing, the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration said Tuesday.

The boat was carrying some 260 Ethiopians from the coast of Djibouti on the 320-kilometer (200-mile) journey across the Gulf of Aden when it sank Monday off Yemen’s southern coast, the IOM said in a statement.

It said search efforts were continuing and so far 71 had been rescued. Among the dead were 31 women and six children, it said.

Yemen is a major route for migrants from the East Africa and the Horn of Africa war-torn Ethiopia trying to reach Gulf countries for work. Despite a nearly decadelong civil war in Yemen, the number of migrants arriving annually tripled from 2021 to 2023, soaring from about 27,000 to over 90,000, the IOM said last month. Around 380,000 migrants are currently in Yemen, according to the agency.

To reach Yemen, migrants are taken by smugglers on often dangerous, overcrowded boats across the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden. In April, at least 62 people died in two shipwrecks off the coast of Djibouti as they tried to reach Yemen. The IOM said at least 1,860 people have died or disappeared along the route, including 480 who drowned.

Monday’s sinking “is another reminder of the urgent need to work together to address urgent migration challenges and ensure the safety and security of migrants along migration routes,” said IOM spokesperson Mohammedali Abunajela.

Over 160 people kidnapped for ransom in Ethiopia last week, US envoy says

By Reuters July 8, 2024

ADDIS ABABA, July 8 (Reuters) - At least 100 people, including students, were kidnapped for ransom last week in Ethiopia's restive regions that have seen sporadic fighting since the end of the civil war in Tigray, the U.S. ambassador to Addis Ababa said on Monday.
While a peace agreement signed in November 2022 has resulted in a measure of stability for Tigray, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government has struggled to bring security to other areas.

Last year, more than 1,300 people were killed across the country, with most of the violence affecting the regions of Amhara and Oromia, according to the United Nations.

"Recent and frequent kidnappings in Oromia and Amhara regions show how prolonged conflict emboldens criminals and weakens (the) rule of law," U.S. Ambassador Ervin Massinga wrote on social media platform X.

On Wednesday, three buses were stopped by unknown gunmen around 120 km (75 miles) north of the capital Addis Ababa, in the Oromia region, said a student of Debark University, who later escaped and hid in a forest.

"It was scary and shocking. They started to beat the passengers with sticks, and force them to get out of the bus," he said.
The attackers spoke Oromo, he said, and had the same hairstyle as fighters from the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebel group, which the UN has accused of killings, destruction of property, rape and abductions.

"The kidnappers are now asking families to pay up to 1 million birr ($17,500) to release the captives," he told Reuters, requesting anonymity.
Spokespersons for the OLA, local Oromia administration and central government did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Asmamaw Zegeye, Debark University's president, confirmed the incident but did not provide further details.
The sister of another student said the group had asked for 500,000 birr for their release.

UN says Ethiopia landslide death toll could reach 500

By Agence France-Presse July 25, 2024

Residents and volunteers dig in the mud in search for bodies at the scene of a landslide in the Kencho Shacha Gozdi district of southern Ethiopia, July 25, 2024.

Kencho Shacha Gozdi, Ethiopia —

The death toll from landslides in a remote region of southern Ethiopia has risen to 257, the United Nations said Thursday and the number could soar up to 500.

Rescuers pressed on with the grim search for bodies and survivors in Kencho Shacha Gozdi, with crowds of distraught people digging through mud, often using just their bare hands and shovels.

Solomon Tsoma told AFP that 13 of his family had died, including his uncle's seven children his brother's infants. "We have recovered 12 bodies but haven't been able to find my sister's body," he said.

The U.N. humanitarian agency, OCHA gave the new toll of 257 dead, citing local authorities. "The death toll is expected to rise to up to 500 people," it added.

OCHA said more than 15,000 people need to be evacuated because of the risk of further landslides, including at least 1,320 children under the age of 5 and 5,293 pregnant women or new mothers.

Aid has begun arriving in the isolated area, including four trucks of supplies from the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, it said.

Relatives and residents mourn the death of their loved ones in a collective ceremony close to the scene of a landslide in Kencho Shacha Gozdi district in southern Ethiopia on July 25, 2024.
