Eritrean Biniam Girmay wows the world on the first stage of the 2022 Giro d’Italia!
May 9, 2022
Jeremy Ford
https://teamafricarising.org/biniam-girmay-giro/
It has been an incredible first few days at the 2022 Giro d’Italia and all eyes are on Biniam Girmay, the 22 year old Eritrean, riding for the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team.
On Friday’s first stage, from Budapest to Visegrád (Hungary), he pushed the world-renowned Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) all the way to the line, on an uphill finish to the line, just getting beaten into second place! Van der Poel was seen seconds later lying on the side of the road hyper-ventilating from his maximum effort to beat Biniam.
This was the closest ever moment, for a black African rider to win a Grand Tour stage. It was a case of centimetres. The wait continues but will we see this record set at this race…
Biniam arrived at the Giro with plenty of attention after his excellent results in January-March. His full results can be found HERE on the ProCyclingStats website.
In a Team Africa Rising exclusive, we caught up with the race’s official commentator (global voice of many of the world’s top races) Anthony McCrossan to get his thoughts on Biniam’s efforts on stage one:
Please wait, video is loading...
After the race, Biniam had this to say: When also asked what a victory would mean for both him and Eritrea over these next three weeks, he said:I tried to do my best, I’ve never done a sprint like it. For 250-300 metres I am at the limit. I fully accept he was stronger than me today but I’m really happy.
The Eritrean cycling fans were also out in large numbers, and are becoming a famous part of the World Tour’s fanbase. When asked about the over-whelming numbers and support, he said:I think it’s all of our dreams to win in a Grand Tour. This is one of the biggest races for us. We’ve never won in a Grand Tour, a black rider; for us it will be the greatest moment ever.
It’s not my first time, to have fans around me. There were a lot of people at the Worlds. Even before, the Eritrean fans are a bit crazy about cycling, and they support the pro cyclists. But for me, I didn’t expect a crowd like this, it made me super happy.

Nahom Zerai , has had a really solid start with his races in Europe with @TeamQhubeka_
His first two races:
54th last week in Circuito del Porto
39th yesterday @ GP Marmo.
Much more to come from this young man. Massive talent!
You have to get a bit of perspective with these results.
Nahom has had 0 racing experience outside of Africa and is still so young, at 19. We have seen so many talented riders come to Europe and DNF almost every race. It's early days, but these results are very encouraging. @CyclingAfrica @ProtouchAfrica

What you need to know:
• Building a Cathedral is viewed as a stepping stone in fostering unity among the Orthodox faithful.
_________
The Ugandan Orthodox Church has described the newly commissioned Eritrean Orthodox Cathedral in Uganda as a big boost to the faith.
Speaking at the commissioning of the St Gabrielle Cathedral in Kansanga on Sunday, on the Lukuli-Nsambya Road in Makindye Division, Rev Archimandrite Constantine Mbonabingi, the vicar of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala, said the Ugandan Orthodox community is working together with the Eritrean Orthodox community in development projects.
Mr Mohammed Sulieman Ahmed, the Eritrean ambassador, said the commissioning of the Church in Kampala is an indication that Eritreans feel at home
Mr Tesfalem Gerahtu, the liaison officer for the Eritrean community in Kampala, said the idea of constructing the Church started in 2006 when the Eritrean population in the country was still very low.
He said when they approached the late Archbishop Jona Lwanga of the Orthodox Church and requested to pray together, they were given a primary school classroom.
He added that they also plan to build schools near the Cathedral and they will be using the Ugandan curriculum. They also intend to intensify the preaching of the Orthodox faith in the country using youth.
Building more Orthodox Churches
In February, the Orthodox Church indicated that more places of worship will be opened in the country under the leadership of Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi.
Bishop Nektarios Lubega, the Orthodox Vicar of Africa and Bishop of Kampala, announced the countrywide opening of more Orthodx churches while opening a new church in Jinja.
The newly-opened Nativity Orthodox Church is on Kyabazinga
Road, 11 kilometres off Jinja-Kamuli, highway. The new head of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop Muzeeyi, was consecrated at St Nicholas Church, Namungoona, near Kampala.
He became the third Orthodox leader in Uganda after his immediate predecessor, Jona Lwanga, who died last September, and Theodros Nankyama who died in 1997.
About 500,000 Ugandans claim Orthodox baptism.

On June 19, 1994, Pope Shenouda III ordained 5 of the first new bishops of Eritrea in Cairo. This was preceded by an appeal, in July 1993, by Eritrean bishops to Pope Shenouda to obtain separation from Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church.

he said. This [Cathedral] is a big boost to the Orthodox Church because the population has increased. The Eritrean Orthodox community is going to help us also build our own Cathedral in Uganda,
Mr Mohammed Sulieman Ahmed, the Eritrean ambassador, said the commissioning of the Church in Kampala is an indication that Eritreans feel at home
he said.Eritreans came to Uganda in 2006, you do not see this kind of church in the rest of Africa, it is very unique. Wherever Eritreans go, the first thing they do is to build a Cathedral. We do have in Juba, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, US, and Europe. The church is a gathering place for all Eritreans world wide,
Mr Tesfalem Gerahtu, the liaison officer for the Eritrean community in Kampala, said the idea of constructing the Church started in 2006 when the Eritrean population in the country was still very low.
He said when they approached the late Archbishop Jona Lwanga of the Orthodox Church and requested to pray together, they were given a primary school classroom.
he said. After one month, we were given another classroom for praying. After six months, we were given land at Lubya Hill and we have been using that land since then without paying a single coin. Today with this Church, we bought our own land and built this Church which has a sitting capacity of between two and three thousand people,
He added that they also plan to build schools near the Cathedral and they will be using the Ugandan curriculum. They also intend to intensify the preaching of the Orthodox faith in the country using youth.

Sir Philip Mitchell, Chief Exec, British Military Administration in his 'strategic' message to the UK Foreign Office on 02 Apr 1948, recommends
1) "our friend" Ethiopia to control Asmara-Massawa territory;
5)
Though Eritrea may remain to be a colony, being under "black" rule will no doubt appear as positive in UN circles
