The Horn podcast: What Eritrea Wants (Deep strategic analysis with author and scholar, Harry Verhoeven)

What Eritrea Wants

This week on The Horn, Alan Boswell is joined by author and scholar, Harry Verhoeven, to discuss Eritrea’s re-emerging role in the Horn of Africa region after more than a decade of isolation.

The international community has long viewed Eritrea as a pariah state, yet the country’s influence is rising again in the turbulent Horn of Africa region. For more than a decade, Ethiopia and the West pushed the country’s regime under President Isaias Afwerki into survival mode. But with the political transition in Ethiopia, and Eritrea’s alliances with Gulf powers across the Red Sea, Asmara is once again looking to shape the region in its favour.

Harry Verhoeven, a scholar on international politics in Africa, joins Alan Boswell to unpack Eritrea’s rising influence in the region and what it means for regional order and stability. They discuss President Isaias Afwerki’s survival techniques and his ties with the Gulf states. Harry also describes the complex alliance between Asmara and Addis Ababa amid the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, and whether President Afwerki could be willing to withdraw Eritrean troops from Ethiopia for tactical purposes. They also look at escalating tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia and where the shifting power relations in the Horn of Africa are headed.

This is how they are trying to weaken Ethiopia. EU indirectly is justifying the genocide in Tigray by Eritrea, amhara and abiy troops. Eritrea is bound to fall and their leader should be brought to International Criminal Court. what Ethiopians should do is to evict the Eritrea army from Ethiopia by force and declare war on Eritrea. Then work out ways we can co-operate with a new regime in Eritrea after Issayas is overthrown . EU uses eritrea to weaken Ethiopia. EU does not want Ethiopia to be an economically strong country. Ethiopians should stand and take control of their country.

TPLF should also be disbanded as they ethnonarcists. But TPLF should be supported if they march to overthrow Issyas and disarm Eritrea.

I don't know what the psuedo-analysts are saying about what Eritrea wants but whatever it is, is not the truth. For one, their don't understand Eritreans. What Eritrea wants is simple. It wants to live in peace in a peaceful neighbourhood. We had no problem with the TPLF until they become greedy and wanted to dominate the Horn of Africa by back-stabbing everyone, left and right. Eritreans have long concluded that they cannot have peace as long as the TPLF cancer is allowed to survive. The TPLF had many opportunities to make peace with the region. But unfortunately for them, they believed their own distorted view of themselves.

1) They fought an unnecessary 2-year war with Eritrea only to finally agree to delimit and demarcate the border through international arbitration.

2) When final and binding decision came, they could have accepted it immediately and most likely saved themselves from the final obliteration that has befallen them now.

3) When they lost the 2005 election, they could have accepted the decision of the Ethiopian people, went back to Tigray to take care of their people.

4) When Meles died, they could have again taken the opportunity to institute genuine change and decamp from power. Instead, they increased their grip on power which necessitated brutal suppression of Ethiopians.

5) When Ethiopians finally rebelled and kicked the out of power, again they could have accepted the reality. Instead of accepting Dr. Abiy's very generous offer to 'Let Bygones Be Bygones' and decamping from power, they took the opposite stance and began to destabilize Ethiopia. THAT LED THEM TO THE FATAL DECISION TO START A WAR WHICH THEY LOST IN THREE WEEKS.

Eritrea will not rest until the last TPLF thug is erased. That is what it wants!

Why do Eritreans care about TPLF? TPLF is an Ethiopian political organisation. TPLF's future will decided by Ethiopians. Some of us would not want TPLF back because of their ethnic based federalism, which we think is destructive. This is ideological difference which can be resloved by all Ethiopians, including members of TPLF. It is to the credit of TPLF that Ethiopia has a developed economy. We will thank TPLF for that. TPLF shall be disbanded but no TPLF member shall be killed. It is wrong for Eritreans to commit genocide on Tigrayan people. We ask Eritreans to leave Ethiopia and not to kill or rob Tigrayans or Oromos or other ethnic groups like Afars because they are us Ethiopians.

TPLF concerns everyone in the neighbourhood. Do you think that it does not concern Eritreans when the TPLF thugs refused to vacate from sovereign Eritrean territories of Badme and Erob? Do you think it does not concern Somalia which was cynically invaded by the Agames? What exactly is your IQ. It must be lower than that of chicken.
