Why did the Ethiopian troop retreat from tesseni when they could have reached Asmara in 1998 ?

I was a small boy then, the Ethiopians were so dehydrated and came to our homes asking for water and we offered them. Most of the ppl there deserted the place and went to hoykota. Why did the Ethiopians retreat, why didn’t they advance forward and dislodged the agame from asmara ? What was the reason for withdrawal ?

Fact #1. You are Agame
Fact #2. Eritrean force left the place to bomb the stupid Woyane army in tje open fields, which exactly what happened. The Woyane army led by tue name Atakilti (which by the way trained by Shabia) got destroyed by Shabias Airforce. As the matter of fact that was one of the few successful attack Shabias Airforce conducted in the 3 years border war.
Fact #3 Shabia let intentionally attracted the woyane army to go in deep inside Eritrea. On military strategic view point, the more you go in the more logistic you need, the bigger the area gets. Ethiopia had neither logistics nor enough soldiers to advance to Asmara. Already before half way to Asmara 110K Ethiopian soldiers died and 100K soldiers wounded. That was over 50% of woyane's army.
