Hi P resent: Try to understand things properly, with the right context, facts and perspective

Please read the following and tell us if Etiyopiyans were treated by the Italians better than Eritreans. Could you explain why you seem to resent Eritreans just because our ancestors were ruled by alien powers? Why are you also interested so much about nudity? What is nudity to you? Nudity (partial or full) could be custom, or forced, or voluntary. Remember, we Eritreans are not afraid of facts about us. I want you to re-direct your energy from resentment into something positive that could help both our peoples be better.

Legalized rapes of Italians in Africa. One more reason for women to rebel against the capitalist system and its most ferocious expression, imperialism

Child brides were not normal. Legalized rapes of Italians in Africa

Curated by Natascia Alibani

It was not only Montanelli who married a twelve year old Abyssinian. In Africa conquered by the Italians legalized rapes, madam and concubinated, even with respect to very young girls and boys, they were the "praxis" with which the "supremacy of the Empire" was claimed.

This post by Natalino Balasso, who for once undresses the comedian's clothes to focus on a completely different type of topic, brings to light a really painful but, at the same time, necessary reflection, to fully understand what war is in its complexity and totality , intended not only as weapons to be embraced and enemies to be shot down, but above all as actions of cruelty and violence free of charge towards what, very concisely (and crudely) are defined as "collateral victims".

"On Liberation I find an interview that brings to mind the controversy about Indro Montanelli and his affair with the African bride-child - writes Balasso - Montanelli said that over there it works like that, that he has done nothing more or less than what they all did. But, as always, creating monsters takes us away from the vision of the whole. It is actually a much broader mental representation, which pertains to the idea of moral centralism of western colonialism. A logically male chauvinist idea. Historian Pascal Blanchard has written a book in which 1200 images like the one you see above are collected (tyratta of Portuguese soldiers in Angola). The book is titled 'Sexe, race et colonies'.
To cap the interview there is this wording:
'For historian Pascal Blanchard, the pornography used by colonial powers to promote an area of thought in which everything is allowed must be shown in order to deconstruct an imaginary that is still present'.
An interview question is this:
Why the choice to publish 1200 images of colonized, dominated, sexualized, eroticized bodies? It is not too much?
The answer is:

'It is precisely the abundance of images that must make us ask questions. It stresses that it is not anecdotal, but that those images are part of a large-scale system. When one thinks of prostitution in the colonies, nobody imagines at what point this system was conceived, mediated and organized by the colonizing states themselves.

Those who think that sexuality was a peripheral adventure to the colonial system are wrong. Cartography means a lot: on the atlases, the lands to be conquered are always allegorically represented as naked women to symbolize the americas, Africa or the Pacific islands. Nudity is part of the marketing of the colonial expedition, and shapes the very identity of indigenous females.

In times of conquest, starting from the end of the fifteenth century, the circulating images evoke an earthly paradise populated by good savages who offer their naked bodies. They are part of the natural setting of the place.
Later, the earthly paradise will turn into a sexual paradise. Westerners will leave for the colonies with the feeling that everything is allowed to them.

There are no prohibitions down there, all moral dictates jump: abuse, rape, pedophilia. Most of the images we publish trace this story, have been hidden, marginalized or forgotten afterwards: 80% of what is in the book is not found in any museum of the image '.

What comes to mind is that there is a sort of tourist colonization today. Let's not forget that Italy has for many years been at the top of the sex tourism ranking. These are thousands of good family fathers who, returning home, will make moralizing speeches about the decline of our country ".

Rape has always been one of the most ferocious and terrible aspects of any conflict, especially in the phase of imperialist and colonial expansion, although the testimonies of Vietnamese women during the war, or the figure of comfort women used as sex slaves from the Japanese army during World War II.

To pay the highest price, as often happens, it was women, not only forced to see husbands, parents, brothers or children killed by the rival army, or to flee their villages, but brutalized and reduced to the rank of objects of pleasure sex by the invaders, who in this way claimed their right to conquest, equating the local females with the newly gained territory, which they could dispose of as they liked.

And the Italians, in this monstrous picture that tells of barbarism and violence without respite, have proved anything but "good people", despite for a long time the truth about the attitude of the army during the conquest operations in Libya or in Ethiopia has been kept silent under a blanket of appropriate carelessness.

The truth, that of today, when it comes to light, speaks of an Italian Africa devastated by massacres, tortures and deportations of entire populations in concentration camps, with 100,000 deaths in the operations of conquest and reconquest of Libya between 1911 and 1932, and even 400,000 in Ethiopia and Eritrea between 1887 and 1941. To this is added, as mentioned, the picture of gender-based violence, which at the time was experienced as perfectly "normal" (remember that Montanelli himself defined his bride twelve-year-old "docile animal"), perfectly summarized in an article by Chiara Volpato, full professor of social psychology at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Milan-Bicocca.

The "porno-tropics tradition"

At least until the time of the conquest of Ethiopia, the Italians were in line with what McClintock, in a 1995 study, called the "porno-tropics tradition", or the metaphor of the black Venus, which reduced the image of the African woman to the exclusive rank of exotic and erotic "dream". The black woman therefore had no other identity than the sexual one, so it was quite natural that the Italians were enticed to the idea of moving to the colonies with the promise of being able to cultivate a real "colonial harem".

But, after the creation of the empire in Ethiopia, the fascist regime replaced the image of black Venus with that, much less courtly, of the inferior being, which had to be subdued to reaffirm western and European superiority and the legitimacy of colonization.

The intertwined sexual relations between African women, often just girls or a little older, and colonizers were defined as "madamato", a term by which we mean a temporary, albeit not occasional, relationship between a citizen and an "indigenous subject". Also in this case, after the creation of the empire, legal mechanisms were set up aimed at reaffirming the prestige of whites, including the ban on marital and extramarital relations between "different races", on the legitimate recognition and adoption of children born from unions between citizens and subjects, and the establishment of a severe racial segregation that drove the "mestizos" back into their community, dissolving any institution previously created for their assistance.

It is clear that, in such a context, African women were stigmatized three times: by race, by class, by gender. Not to mention that the prohibition of "legitimate" relations between conquerors and their acuities, in many Italians, the desire to possess them anyway, increasing the acts of violence against them out of all proportion.

Some stories of violence against African women

Also in the Volpato article we read some episodes of violence carried out by the Italian conquerors in the Horn of Africa. In 1891, in the process carried out by the Royal Commission of Inquiry after the conquest of Asmara, aimed at shedding light on some of the misdeeds committed by the Italian army, it emerged that the five wives of Kantibai Aman (died in prison) had been drawn, at the disposal of General Baldissera, among the Italian officers of the garrison. Still, none of the characters involved were punished, based on the decision that military discipline had not been violated.

A testimony of Alberto Pollera from 1922:

The indigenous law allows the search for paternity; indeed this is one of the cornerstones of that right; Italian law prohibits it; and based on this contrast in law, many Italians, taking advantage of the ignorance of the natives on this point, easily make them concubines, to abandon them when they have offspring.

A letter, sent in 1911 to the consul Piacentini, by a settler who protested for the request of the Bilene girls of one hundred thalers of Maria Teresa for their virginity; man was amazed that

... In a country of conquest, such as Eritrea, the white ruler was not allowed to take over the violence of these girls, or at least a much lower price was not imposed on them.

Testimony of Tertullian Gandolfi, worker who left us his memories of Africa, from 1910:

Among the many painful cases observed by me, here is one. Once I saw a curved non-commissioned officer in broad daylight, like a beast in heat, over a sickly eight-year-old boy, who had nothing but skin and bones, who raped him.

Testimony of Ladislav Sava, a Hungarian doctor who was in Addis Ababa at the time of the Italian occupation, in the London weekly New Times & Ethiopia News, in 1940:

I personally witnessed the deportation of Ethiopian women to houses converted by force by the Italian military into brothels.

In the interviews collected in 1994 among the veterans of Africa one of the respondents said:

The colony was a paradise for older men who could have relationships with twelve-year-old girls.

Two sentences issued by the Addis Ababa court for rape: in the first the victim, Desta Basià Ailù, is a nine-year-old girl, segregated for several days, against her will, in the accused's home, then tried for carnal violence , not by kidnapping. He got extenuating circumstances based on the fact that the victim was an abandoned child, easy prey to anyone.

In the second we talk about Lomi, thirteen years old, tied "for punishment", after carnal violence. His executioner was first acquitted, because the judges believed that at thirteen he was a sexually abyssinian adult. He was sentenced on appeal, for not having followed the dictates of the civilizing mission of the superior race.
