Japan didn't invade China during the war. Its colonisation of China took place well before the war broke out. Japan invaded the Chinese province of Manchuria in 1931, and by 1939, Japan had possession of roughly 25% of China's massive territory and more than a third of the entire population of China was under the control of Japan.
