The Russian Pacific Fleet frigate, Marshal Shaposhnikov, arrived today, 28 March, for a five-day port call in Massawa, commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the Russian Federation and Eritrea.
Upon its arrival at the Massawa port, the naval frigate was warmly welcomed by Eritrea’s Navy. The welcoming ceremony was attended by senior government officials, Commanders of the Eritrean Defense Forces, and Mr. Igor Mozgo, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Eritrea.
Senior government officials and military Commanders toured the naval frigate and received a briefing on the objectives of its tour and its history.
It is worth recalling that India’s naval ship conducted a similar tour to the port city of Massawa.

Russia to hold joint naval exercises with East African nation – envoy

The frigate ‘Marshal Shaposhnikov’ has arrived for a nine-day stay in Eritrea

Russia has sent a military ship to participate in joint drills with Eritrea for the first time in the 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Russia’s ambassador to the country, Igor Mozgo, announced on Thursday.

Mozgo stated that the Udaloy-class frigate ‘Marshal Shaposhnikov’ has arrived at the African country’s Port of Massawa and is scheduled to stay in Eritrea until April 5.

Russian sailors will participate in a series of joint events with the Eritrean Navy, according to a statement from the Russian ambassador.

On March 14, the Russian Navy concluded joint drills with their Chinese and Iranian counterparts in the Gulf of Oman. The ‘Marshal Shaposhnikov’ also participated in those exercises.

The Russian Defense Ministry revealed that during the two days of drills with the Iranian and Chinese navies, “Russian sailors practiced joint maneuvers and communication exercises, the firing of high-caliber machine guns, and small-caliber onboard artillery on surface and air targets by day and by night.”

Official diplomatic ties between Russia and Eritrea were established in 1993. Russia’s embassy in Asmara opened in 1994, while Eritrea opened an embassy in Moscow two years later.

Last May, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, who was in Russia on an official visit.

The leaders discussed the prospects for the development of Russian-Eritrean relations in various fields, as well as current regional and international issues. It was the first meeting between the two leaders.

Afwerki took part in the Russia-Africa Summit held in St. Petersburg last July. He also met with Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

Eritrea desperately needs wise leaders, Aligning with Russia against the west is not beneficial to Eritrea.

These pictures must distress Ethiopians, as their access to the Red Sea is reduced through their electronic screens!

All you get from the West is pledges that are never concretised and blah blah.

Apart from Egypt and Ethiopia, no other African country gets anything of significance from the West. The West and oil-rich Gulf Arabs can both go fuc'k themselves.

I can agree with you that Egypt gets a lot from the West but not Ethiopia. The only thing Ethiopia gets is debts in the form of printed papers which ensure to keep the country and the population in the deepest political and economic crisis for generations.

Ethiopia still receives substantial sums in grants for developmental projects from the World Bank and its branch, International Development Association (IDA), etc., compared to the rest of the continent.

However, African countries and other developing countries should cultivate a culture of self-reliance, counting on themselves, and stop relying upon foreign assistance.

But Russia is not a friend of Eritrea, It simply wants to use African countries as an ally against the west, Eritrea should pursue a foreign policy that benefit its own economy and well-being, Instead of tying itself tightly to Russia's chariot to get the world's attention.

No, the west is not pro Ethiopia but the west, especially the United States, is determined to keep Ethiopia in a permanent civil war cycle, dependant, supine, weak and under its full control.

Right now, Ethiopia with a population of nearly 125 million, is economically and geopolitically irrelevant on the world stage, the west want it that way.

Isaias Afwerki is playing a dangerous game.

Russia and the so called west are trying to drag African countries into their own war, Unfortunately, Isaias Afwerki, Sudanese and a few other African leaders are voluntarily participating, Sudan is now a battlefield in the Russia-Ukraine/West war and war-torn Ethiopia is the next battlefield between Ukraine/Wes and Russia war.

Addis Ababa is the next battlefield.

Russian Warships Transit Red Sea to Eritrea as Houthis Resume

After a lot of speculation in the Western media about Russian warships entering the Red Sea, the Russian Pacific fleet’s frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov arrived on Thursday, March 28 at Eritrea’s Port of Massawa for a five-day visit. The frigate was accompanied to the Red Sea by the missile cruiser Varyag.

The Russian news agency Tass added to the speculation with a brief report on Thursday, citing the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press service, which said the ships were carrying out “assigned tasks within the framework of the long-range sea campaign.” Bloomberg highlighted that the destination of the ships was unclear speculating on Russian motives.

At the same time, it was noted that after a several days lull, U.S. Central Command reported a new series of launches coming from Houthi territory in Yemen. Four long-range unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were launched early on March 27 aimed at an unspecified U.S. warship and destroyed by U.S. forces according to CENTCOM. They then noted for the second day in a row four additional unmanned aerial systems were launched by the Houthi terrorists aimed at a coalition vessel and a U.S. warship and destroyed without incident.

Eritrea’s Ministry of Information ended the speculation releasing photos and announcing the Marshal Shaposhnikov’s port visit to Massawa to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Russia and Eritrea. The frigate they said was welcomed by Eritrea’s navy at a ceremony also attended by senior government officials. The vessel will stay at the port until April 5.

In the last decade, the bilateral partnership between Eritrea and Russia has intensified, with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki making two state visits to Russia last year alone.

Eritrea holds significant geopolitical significance to Russia, specifically in achieving its long-standing ambition for a permanent military presence in the Red Sea. During his first state visit to Eritrea last year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov lauded the logistical potential of the Massawa port. Last year, the port city signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Russian Sevastopol’s Black Sea naval base pledging closer ties.

Some defense analysts have argued that Massawa port could be a viable second choice for Russia after Port Sudan, where there have been advanced high-level diplomatic engagements on establishing a naval base. However, with the ongoing civil war in Sudan, the process of the country to ratify the agreement with Russia on the navy base seems to have stalled. A naval base in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean by extension would increase the Russian presence without the long voyages to reach the area.

At the regional level, the Horn of Africa politics have almost reached a tipping point with the recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland on sea access. For a long time, Ethiopia had been seeking access to Eritrea’s Red Sea port of Assab, which was once its territory until Eritrea gained independence in 1993.
