The United Nations Security Council has demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages as the United States abstained from the vote.

The remaining 14 council members voted for the resolution on Monday.

Speaking after the vote, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield blamed Hamas for the delay in passing a ceasefire resolution.

“We did not agree with everything with the resolution,” which she says is the reason why the US abstained.

“Certain key edits were ignored, including our request to add a condemnation of Hamas,” Thomas-Greenfield said. She stressed that the release of captives will lead to the increase in humanitarian aid in the besieged coastal enclave.

Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays said this is a “very, very significant” development.

“After almost six months … the vote, almost unanimous,” has demanded a lasting and immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

“The US has used its veto three times,” Bays said. “This time, the US let this pass”.

More to come…

No country and people votes on behalf of the Israeli people. The choice if only up to Israeli, not the NGO ( aka UN). Israel cannot afford babysitting notorious world class terrorist Hamas to continue exist. That is why Israel is flashing her middle finger and keep doing the moral obligation of eliminating terrorist so that people will have peace in the end. It is about people lives, not about political correctness relaxing by sipping coffee in luxurious conference hall and talking about babysitting terrorists.

I think to have heard the woman (American UN-Ambassador) speak in terms of "a non-binding resolution" in her remarks after the vote was announced. I wondered myself about the connotation of this attachment to the resolution, which America abstained itself as the only vote of the 15 member council.

I also heard recently the so called UNSC resolution is normally binding but not enforceable, because the body doesn't have its own force to enforce its resolution.

Let's hope that the guns will be silenced over Gaza tonight, assuming the wording "immediate" has also real meaning.

I wish peace everybody around the world!
