Menghistu Hailemariam was the first to arrive in Eritrea to witness the charred remains of the 33 Ethiopian fighter planes blown to pieces, which included a Soviet-made long range bomber plane called Ilyushin Il-76 that was worth millions of dollars.

His troops led him to an area where the Eritrean commando had escaped after the successful mission, and there laid a lone Eritrean martyr who used a hand grenade to end his life after suffering a bullet wound to his leg during the escape, a self-sacrificing act that astonished Ethiopian soldiers.

Menghistu was later said to have ordered this troops to give the Eritrean warrior a hero's burial and take lessons from his heroic actions.

Although the operation took 2 years in planning, all it took was 18 minutes to turn the entire Ethiopian air force into dust.

This story is not told in Ethiopia for fear of making some people stop dreaming, because in the absence of dreams, self-pity reigns supreme. :P
