ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Drought conditions in Ethiopia's northern region of Amhara have affected more than 1.8 million people, an Ethiopian official said Friday.

Tesfaw Batabl, commissioner at the Amhara Region Disaster Prevention and Food Security Commission, said that the drought has impacted 1,846,985 people across nine zones in the region, and has caused widespread damage, leading to the starvation of both animals and humans.

"To mitigate the damage caused by the drought, the Amhara region administration has allocated around 7.7 million U.S. dollars to aid those affected," Batebel was quoted by Ethiopian Press Agency as saying.

Last Saturday, Minister of Government Communication Service Legesse Tulu said that drought conditions in several regions of Ethiopia have affected a total of 3.8 million people.

According to a report from the United Nations Children's Fund, the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia has further deteriorated due to climate-related shocks.

Reported fighting erupted in Gondar city between Fano Forces and Ethiopian Defense Forces. Local news sources confirm the incident occurred primarily on Saturday, mainly affecting Azezo and Kebele 18 localities within the city. Complete calm has yet to be restored.

The conflict coincided with the Ethiopian Christmas celebration, disrupting business activities, imposing transportation restrictions, and forcing residents in affected areas to spend the holiday under challenging circumstances.

Ethio News, citing sources from the area, reported that government forces employed artillery and heavy weaponry in Gondar—a historical city that is one of the prominent tourist destinations in the region. Up to 14 people, including civilians, are reported to have been killed.

Abiy Ahmed’s Gov’t Reportedly Arresting Eritrean Refugees

Eritreans in Ethiopia reportedly face arbitrary arrests. Human Rights Organizations have confirmed that they are receiving complaints about the arbitrary arrests of Eritreans.

In a report published on Tuesday, Ethio FM cited multiple human rights organizations stating that they have received these complaints.

Mebrih Berhane, a law practitioner and Deputy Director of Human Rights First Ethiopia, informed the news source that Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia are visiting the office to report unlawful and arbitrary arrests, apparently based on alleged grounds of “illegal presence.”

Afwerki asserted that the bodies mentioned were “stillborn,” holding them responsible for the political, economic, and social deterioration in African nations.

The African leader added that these organizations were causing the exhaustion of populations, leading them on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean, and subjecting them to Western exploitation, seizing their decision-making power.

The Eritrean president, however, appeared optimistic about Saudi-African partnership, deeming it as a lifeline for the region’s people, rescuing them from the quagmire of underdevelopment and propelling them towards progress and sustainable development.
