In simple terms Dos attack is performed for different purposes including for political means or just intended to cripple company's performances. Someone or a group of people in their computers send a lot of unwanted data to the server as a result, the server could become busy answering their requests and finally unable to give services to ordinary users.But what is the solutions?

The attackers were registering thousands of fake new members every hour -- over a million in 3 days. We have temporarily suspended new registrations and currently removing the fake users.

Yes that is what expected. Million users request services the server at the same time and the server will become so busy and at last it will crash. It can't able to do any kind of work.
