“Murder as an Institution

Little as human life was valued in Ethiopia, the desire of the Galla to kill seems to have horrified even the Abyssinians 69 ; and a man was not considered a full man till he had killed a human being — every Galla claimed “ the right to kill” Even so, the rest of the Galla themselves looked upon the Arusi as especially ferocious, for to
them murder, especially at the time of the great festivals, is both an honour and a social necessity, though if an Arusi kills a fellow-tribesman it is believed that he will get leprosy ; but inter-tribal murders are allowed without penalty, particularly at the end of each Luba period. Before setting out to commit a “murder for honour ” the Arusi drink large quantities of blood, which produces a condition of frenzy. Since the murder is nearly always a cowardly one, they hide and kill unsuspecting wayfarers, emasculating them and taking home the genitals as a trophy. On their return the murderers enact the scene, with cries of triumph and derisive imitations of the victim's anguish. Only after such a murder may a man wear a copper ring in his ear. When several men take part in a murder, the honour goes to him who strikes the first blow : hence there is often much quarrelling. A man who sets out before a festival to kill and returns unsuccessful is not only ridiculed, but is branded on the forehead and given a small jar of milk which he has to make into [deleted], as a sign that he is not a man. 70 No man could hold a position in the gada-government unless he had killed a man or a large animal.”
