Eritrean Leader Lands In Russia On Putin’s Invitation

(BBC)Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has landed in Moscow for a four-day official visit to Russia, at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin.

The foreign and culture ministers are also on the trip, Information Minister Yemane Meskel says on Twitter.

Eritrea and Russia enjoy cordial relations – and Eritrea is one of the few countries that has voted against UN resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

President Isaias, who recently returned from an official visit to China, has ruled Eritrea since it won independence from neighbouring Ethiopia in 1993.

The country, a one-party state and a highly militarised society, occupies a strategically important area in the Horn of Africa – and has never held a national election.

Mr Isaias was greeted at the airport on his arrival by Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Mr Yemane tweeted.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is currently on African tour that started in Kenya on Monday, visited Eritrea in January.

Putin to Meet With President of Eritrea in Moscow on Wednesday, Kremlin Says

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, who is on an official visit to Russia, on May 31, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.

"On May 31 ... Putin will hold talks with ... Afwerki, who is on an official visit in Russia. It is planned to discuss the prospects for the development of Russian-Eritrean relations in various fields, as well as topical issues of the regional and international agenda," the Kremlin said in a statement.

On May 24, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his counterpart from Eritrea Osman Saleh congratulated each other on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Russian-Eritrean diplomatic relations, the Russian Foreign Minister said.

"Lavrov's message expressed confidence that traditionally friendly relations and mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation will continue to develop successfully in a spirit of solidarity and mutual support for the benefit of the peoples of our states, in the interests of peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the continent as a whole," the Ministry stressed.
Furthermore, the Russian foreign minister confirmed his willingness to continue working with his Eritrean counterpart to deepen the multifaceted partnership between Moscow and the East African country.

In March 2022, Eritrea was one of five states to oppose the UN General Assembly resolution demanding that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine. Motivating its decision, the Eritrean delegation noted that the policy of imposing unilateral sanctions was unacceptable for the country, and later Eritrean officials expressed unequivocal support for Russia's actions "for the sake of building global peace and security.

In May 2022, Eritrea voted against the UN Human Rights Council decision to create a commission to investigate possible human rights violations during Russia's special military operation in Ukraine; in November, it voted against the GA resolution on reparations and reparations from Russia for "aggression" in Ukraine.

In February 2023, the African country did not support an anti-Russian UN General Assembly resolution on the anniversary of the special military operation.

The global world order is on the verge of a radical transformation, there is an "historical obligation" to create a just world order on the basis of mutual respect between the nations, and Russia will play its part in this process, said Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

He emphasized that nations across the globe should advocate for the allocation of the necessary resources for the transition to a new, civilized international order based on mutual respect, cooperation, and prosperity. According to Afwerki, in such a world order, justice and the rule of law will be the highest values.

"I am convinced that the Russian Federation will play its part in this mission of all mankind on the path to solidarity and cooperation among free peoples," the Eritrean leader said.
The Russian president, for his part, stated that Moscow and Asmara are planning to sign a number of intergovernmental agreements in particular aimed at developing trade and economic relations between the two countries.

"We have a number of intergovernmental agreements on our agenda. I hope that our colleagues have worked hard and we will be able to sign them," he said.

He noted that there are "good prospects" for Russia and Eritrea to cooperate in various fields of mutual interest, noting that the countries are actively developing ties in the cultural and social spheres. He added that contacts in the political sphere are evolving as well, recalling that at the beginning of the year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Eritrea.

"We are cooperating within the UN. Our relations in the cultural sphere are developing quite well, dozens of Eritrean students have already received education in the Russian Federation, and this process continues," the president stated.
