The value of Somalia's ocean and marine resources are priceless assets

Post by AbyssiniaLady » 11 Apr 2023, 02:10

Take a peek Inside Somalia’s Ocean Wealth.

Northeastern Somali Sea.

The Somali marine ecosystem is rich in a diversity of living resources. Dynamic oceanographic features attract billions of migratory tunas, billfishes, sharks, whale sharks and sea turtles, Warm tropical Somali waters nurture coral reef systems that are home to thousands of species of marine life, and highly productive open waters support schooling pelagic creatures such as sardines and squid.

Northwestern Somali Sea - Djibouti Beach.

Somalia has by far the richest and the longest coastline of any country in Africa at roughly 3,333 kilometers and its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extends across 1.477.500 million square kilometers and possesses a strategic significance due to its linkage to international trade.

Southern Somali Sea.

The Somali maritime space, which wraps around the Horn of Africa from the Gulf of Berbera/Aden to the Western Indian Ocean, is immense. The coastline stretches from Djibouti to Kenya and the maritime territory claimed in the corresponding exclusive economic zone covers 1,477,500 million square kilometers, including the limit of its outer continental shelf beyond 200M, To put it in perspective, this maritime space is larger than the maritime spaces claimed by Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Egypt, Tanzania and Kenya combined. Nowhere else in the world does such a poor and politically fractured government take responsibility for such a vast maritime area.

In the north, Somali waters encompass approximately half the Gulf of Berbera/Aden, stretching some 1,200 km from the western border with Djibouti across northern Somalia toward the island of Socotra. This highly trafficked region is transited by nearly all of the global commerce between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Shipping traffic is heavily concentrated in the west as ships approach the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, but disperses closer to the Arabian Sea in the east. The geopolitical importance of this maritime region is evinced by the presence of French, American, Japanese, and Chinese bases and German, Italian, and Spanish logistic support facilities in nearby Djibouti. Most shipping traffic passes through this Somalia region.

Central Somali Sea.

The southern portion of the Somali maritime space extends for more than 2,133 km along the northeastern coast of the African continent. This stretch spans the waters off Puntland south toward Jubaland before ending near the border with Kenya. It includes the vital port cities of Mogadishu and Kismayo, but also hundreds of miles of remote, sparsely populated coastline. International shipping traffic is less concentrated there than it is in the Gulf of Berbera/Aden, but enough ships transit the area to support activities like Eastern and Southern Africa countries traders and fishing vessels.

Somali Basin

Sandy beaches form a large part of the coastal environment of Somalia and are particularly important to six of the seven species of sea turtles populations, The coast of Somalia is one of the most important turtle nesting grounds on a global scale.

Southern Somali Sea.

Opportunities

Somali waters which are home to more than half of all marine species of the entire Indian ocean, have the potential to be as lucrative as they are vast. Somali maritime claims contain rich fisheries that attract fishing fleets from all over the world, Unfortunately, Somalia is unable to police and monitor its vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) effectively, The losses due to Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing are estimated to be between US$1.5 billion and US$2 billion per year.

Somali ocean feeds and employs hundreds of millions of people worldwide, Europeans, Asian and Arabs etc.

Northern Somali Sea - Middle Eastern Fishing Boats.

Somali Ocean is a mecca for European, Asian and Middle Easterner fishermen.

From space, there is only one stretch of Indian Ocean that lights up at night, the lights beam from thousands of foreigner fishing vessels fishing illegally in Somali waters, Since the West and Asian countries have emptied their own waters, their problem are being exported to Somalia.

Sharks, Tuna, Lobster, Squid, Swordfish, Mackerel, Marlin fish, Sardines, Yellowfin, Longtail, Skipjack, Bigeye tuna, Hammerhead and thousands of other marine species swim in large quantities in Somali Exclusive Economic Zone, Somalia is a country known for its high abundance of large pelagic fish and its diverse tuna samples including the yellowfin, longtail.

Industrial fishing boats are required to carry an automatic identification system (AIS), which broadcasts information about a ship’s location, size, and nationality, The screenshot image below - taken from the website Global Fishing Watch in 2021 - show thousands of fishing vessels clearly fishing in the Somali Exclusive Economic Zone.

Somalia is a fishing mecca. (I took this screenshot in 2021)

Greetings AbyssiniaLady,

The somalis are blessed by God or call it by nature to have a wonderful country and they could have made this promising country a role model to Africa but sadly they are killing each other.

The somalis have no one to blame other than themselves. They made their beautiful country as a scare-crow to many dictators, they apply the term SOMALIZATION to scare their subjects. In other words they tell them that if they don't obey their rule, they will end up as Somalia.

Sadly the term somalization has become the norm worldwide for negative concept.

Kerenite,

Greetings, bro.

You're right. And Omar I. Gelleuh of Djibouti is actually the epitome of those who are scaring their people with Somalia, by keep telling them that if they ever messed with him, they would end up becoming another Somalia.

The Somali nation-state has been failing for the last three decades or so due to the very fact that the country has been convulsed by a destructive tribal parliamentary system, federalism, and successive corrupt and incompetent governments that have been incapable to deliver positive political goods to the Somalia's population.

I disagree with this statement.

kerenite, you can't be that naive, Somalis are in fact an innocent victims of American imperialism, they should be treated with compassion, Forty-six years of Europe and America's interference and bombing have left Somalis hungry, acutely malnourished, traumatized and displaced with most of the population.

In 2006 and 2011, the United States and its European allies used Ethiopia and Kenya to wage a proxy destabilization war against Somalia when the country had not had an effective central government for sixteen years, A war that killed over 20,000 Somalis and internally displaced millions in Southern Somalia, Somalis are real victims of Western imperialism.

To begin with, thanks bro somaliman for agreeing with my statement.

AbyssiniaLady, with all due respect, our somali brothers have no one to blame other than themselves, they opened their gates wide to the vultures aka the imperialists to invade their country ala proxy war waged by zenawi and kenya.

Had the somalis been united, the west with their proxys would have never ever dared to knock at their doors.

I ain't issayas fan but I have to admit, he at least is not allowing the vultures (western imperialism) to never ever venture and come to the eritrean borders using proxies such as agazians etc. At least so far.

AbyssiniaLady is right in her introduction by asserting that "Somalis are real victims of Western imperialism." But then she fails in her analysis by just listing wars, internally displaced people, famine, bombing, etc. Because these are only among the consequences of the West's destabilisation of Somalia.

There are no more wars, famine, bombing, etc in Somalia, yet Somalia is still in its protracted quagmire! How would you explain this. I tell you how and it's as follows.

Somalia is failed both by its own people and the West. If Somalis favoured the collective benefit over their short term fraudulent selfish gains, no western country, Arab, or a neighbouring vulture would have any chance to get any role to play in the Somali affairs.

It's, however, important to remind that it's only a small fraction of unscrupulous Somalis, which are covered by a detrimental tribal parliamentary system and a federal system that is incompatible with Somalia, that have to shoulder the blame, as the rest are captives and are unable to modify the algorithms, as these are protected by the West.

Both such a federalism and tribal parliamentary system were designed and imposed onto Somalis without any prior or subsequent consultation with the Somali people, leave alone Somalis voting for them on a referendum, and both are built upon corruption to the highest order. Needless to add that Somalia is one of the least suitable countries for federalism.

Not only is the West shielding and preserving these two ruinous systems to the detriment of Somali people, but also, they managed to base the current constitution upon these two systems, and all of the current ills in Somalia have their taproot in these two systems, and the only way-out of Somalia's impasse is unity among Somali people and sadly this not on the horizon.

Let's agree to disagree, Europeans were not invited to Somalia, they invited themselves to Somalia.

Eritrea is a country of great geopolitical importance because it sits alongside one of the world’s busiest sea routes, Other than that, Eritrea, just like Lesotho, is insignificant to Western imperialism and that is why the United States of America has never had a vital interest in who rules in Eritrea.

You are right about the so called Agazians.

I wish all the best for my somali brothers. As they say a friend in need is a friend indeed, somalia was the only country which stood by us during our bitter struggle whereas arab countries were closing their doors in front of our faces.

Among other things, the somali state issued national somali diplomatic passports to osman saleh sabbe, issayas afwerki and meles zenawi. The latter stabbed them later on the back.

Abyssinialady, I agree with your statement "let's agree to disagree" BTW, such term was coined by a Lebanese (his name escapes my memory) at the beginning of the 20th century (a century ago).

Not only has the West directly been destabilising Somalia, but also, it has been spreading misleading information about Somalia at the UN and across the world to justify its interference in Somalia.

For instance, many people around the world, including people from neighbouring countries, believe to date that Somalis have been fighting and killing each other in Somalia, simply because the West has spread through its toxic media that Somali clans have been fighting against each other in Somalia and have been making the whole country a messed up dangerous zone, when in reality no a single clan has ever fought against any other clan and such a clannish conflict has never taken place in any part of Somalia.

They've labeled Somalia as a "Islamist" terrorism den, when in fact it was the West that had created Al-shabab and it's still the West that is financing its arms. The prolongation of the existence of Al-shabab is vital to their spurious money making "War on terror."

There's an arms embargo on Somalia and thus Somalia is not allowed to buy or own any arms, and the West is saying that they'll only lift the embargo once Somalia has defeated Al-shabab. How are you going to defeat Al-shabab without arms! Obviously an artful chicken and egg scenario!

In case you've heard that there are thousands of soldiers from the African Union Mission to Somalia, these claim that their mandate is a regional peacekeeping mission and not fighting Al-shabab. What peace to keep, as no one is fighting against anyone in Somalia, apart from Al-shabab.

In addition, despite Al-Shabaab's insurgency has been dragging on for over fifteen years, any Somali government that considered any political engagement with Al-shabab has been outrightly discredited by the West, and a few Somali prime ministers who sought to reach out to Al-shabab for a peace agreement have lost their posts through concocted vote of no confidence out of nowhere through the parliament.

They also labeled Somalia as a pirates' den, without letting people wonder how on earth two or three Somali guys in a very basic small fishing boat armed with AK-47 were able to board massive oil tankers and other merchant vessels, seize them, sail them to the Somali coast, and hold them right before the eyes of 'NATO Operation Ocean Shield - Allied Maritime Command', which was a NATO's naval forces operation with a significant number of ships of all kind and maritime patrol aircrafts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa that were able to also enter the territorial waters of Somalia with the consent of Somali authorities! Obviously a lassez faire policy!

The piracy in question has faded, yet NATO's naval forces are still operating off the Horn of Africa, including the Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian Ocean up to the Strait of Hormuz. This proves that such a piracy was just a cover-up.

The EU says it will buy at least US$550 million worth of fish from Somalia annually, Currently, European fishing vessels steal an annual US$1.5 billion worth of fish from Somali waters.

Northern Somali Sea - Berbera.

Djibouti is benefiting the most from the Somali ocean, Its coastline makes a remarkable contribution to Djibouti’s economy, It is estimated to generate an annual value of $3 billion per year, Djibouti also earns millions from foreign-owned vessels flying Djibouti flags while operating on the high seas.

In a few years, Somalia will most likely leave Caribbean Islands countries behind to become the world's most desired beach destinations, Somalia has some of the most spectacular and pristine beaches where you can just stand and admire the beauty of the ocean.

Somalia is a hidden paradise for beach lovers.

Northeastern Somali Sea.

An estimated between US$1.5 billion and US$2 billion worth of seafood is being stolen by the European fishing industry from Somali waters each year, However, European consumers are unaware of this fact.

Turtles nest year-round on the Somali coast.

Thousands of Somali Cormorants.

Somali beaches are important birds and turtle nesting grounds, Six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles - the flatback, green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead and olive ridley live in the Somali Ocean, Every year, from April to September, nesting sea turtles emerge from the Somali ocean at night to lay their eggs on the sandy Somali beaches and thus driving a car around on the beach could destroy those eggs.

Somalia definitely needs an urgent law to protect sea turtles and birds.
