Mogadishu-(SONNA)-In a decisive legal verdict, a Mogadishu court has delivered justice by finding 36 Pakistani and Iranian fishermen guilty of engaging in illegal fishing activities within Somali waters. The court’s ruling marks a significant step in combating illegal fishing and upholding maritime laws to protect Somalia’s valuable marine resources.

The fishermen, originating from Yemen and Iran, were apprehended in April of this year for unlawfully exploiting Somalia’s fishing grounds. Following a thorough investigation and due process, the court has held them accountable for their actions.

The court’s decision includes substantial penalties aimed at ensuring justice is served. Each individual has been fined $11,000, resulting in a total sum of $396,000. This significant financial penalty sends a strong message that illegal fishing activities will face severe consequences.

In addition to the fines, the court has ordered the confiscation of two fishing boats and the associated equipment used in the illegal activities. Furthermore, an astounding 24,850 tons of fish, caught in violation of Somali laws, will also be seized. These measures demonstrate the court’s commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s marine ecosystem and deterring future illegal fishing ventures.

Moreover, the court has rightfully imposed an additional fine of $30,000 on the fishermen for a previous incident in November of the preceding year. This penalty addresses the theft of fish from Somali waters, ensuring that past transgressions are not overlooked.

This landmark ruling serves as a testament to Somalia’s dedication to protecting its maritime resources and enforcing the rule of law. The successful prosecution of these Pakistani and Iranian fishermen highlights the nation’s commitment to combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which has long undermined Somalia’s economy and ecological balance.

The court’s decision reflects the collaboration between Somali authorities and international partners in the ongoing fight against illegal fishing. It emphasizes the importance of global cooperation to address this pervasive issue that affects coastal communities worldwide.

The Somali government, along with its partners, remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable fishing practices and the preservation of marine biodiversity. Efforts to strengthen legislation, enhance surveillance, and promote responsible fishing practices continue to ensure the long-term sustainability of Somalia’s marine resources.

With justice served, this ruling sets a precedent for future cases and sends a clear message that illegal fishing in Somali waters will be met with legal consequences. The court’s commitment to upholding the law paves the way for a more secure and prosperous future for Somalia’s fishing industry and its coastal communities.

The main fishing grounds for the European Union distant fishing fleets are in the Somali waters, this secret multi-billion dollar business must be told.

Map showing European fishing grounds in the Somali Ocean.
Source: Commission des thons de l’océan Indien (CTOI) - The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)

The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is an intergovernmental organisation responsible for the management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean, It works to achieve this by promoting cooperation among its Contracting Parties (Members) and Cooperating Non-Contracting Parties in order to ensure the conservation and appropriate utilisation of fish stocks and encouraging the sustainable development of fisheries.

The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is European Union organization, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti are members of IOTC.

The European Union fishing fleet catches 75% of their fish in Somali waters, Let me put that another way, The European Union illegal fishing trawlers haul between US$1.5 billion and US$2 billion worth of fish out of Somali waters annually, France openly admits it is stealing €204 million worth of fish from Somalia every three months, probably more than €204 million.

It’s World Ocean Day: Here’s Why Life Depends On Our Oceans

Central Somali Sea.

by Bill Frist - Jun 8, 2023

June is the month when the global community honors the crucial services the ocean provides. From World Ocean Day (June 8 this year) to the United Nations Ocean Conference (June 27-July 1), we celebrate that the ocean sustains all life on the planet and call attention to the threats to its future.

Many don’t realize the diverse ways in which our daily life is impacted and sustained by Earth’s marine ecosystems. First, more than half the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the ocean (primarily from phytoplankton), regardless of where we live and breathe. The ocean also regulates the global climate and influences weather patterns, driving storms that often move far inland. Third, it feeds a lot of us: at least 3.3 billion people, including the world’s poorest, rely significantly on marine products for sustenance, according to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization. And the seas contribute considerably to the global economy, with about 600 million livelihoods depending on fisheries and aquaculture.

@Somaliman,

You are making an unnecessary noise here. It is good Somalia has a beach. But you should also know having a sea or ocean does not necessarily make Somalia rich. There are dozens of countries with access to sea and ocean but are very poor. The existence and formation of an ocean may also mark some geographical and ecological disadvantages in terms of producing sustainable mainstay of that country.

For instance, Bangladesh claims to have the world's longest sea beach, a sea beach with a view of sunrise and sunset and a unique coral sea beach.
A quarter of Bangladesh's landmass is bounded on the south by the northern Indian Ocean. Yet, as you may well know, Bangladesh is among the poorest nation on the planet. This reminds me an Amharic poem

ውሃ ቀለብ ሁኖ - ካሳደረ ብሬ፤
ዐባይ እና ጣና ነበሩ በአገሬ።

So, in my opinion, Somalian people aspiring for development first has to look into their existing cultural institutional resources and transform their outlooks. You got the world's notorious Islamist filled with violence which is totally against civilization and yet you are beating drum for development. That is a wrong priority.

In 2018 Somalia granted fishing licenses to 51 Chinese vessels to exploit tuna and tuna-like species in its waters stretching from 45 kilometers from its coastline to 370 kilometers, Somali waters are some of the most productive in the world, teeming with schools of yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, hammerhead sharks, whale shark, dolphinfish, sardines and 300 species of shark etc, Blessed with the world's strongest upwelling.

Ancient Silk Road Route, also known as the Belt and Road Initiative.

In the ancient and medieval periods, Somalia was a key hub for traders bringing goods from India, China, and South East Asia to the Middle East and Southern Europe. A key stop on the Silk Road trade route, Somali ports were one of the most important sources of valuable spices, ebony, ivory, and gold in the world.

Back in 2013, China’s President Xi Jinping presented the Belt and Road Initiative. It set out to connect 65% of the world’s population to China by creating a network of sea routes and land links. connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road trade routes.

The Belt and Road Initiative - Sea Route.

The world's economic and geopolitical center of gravity is shifting towards Asia and the broader Somali Ocean, also known as the Indian Ocean, home to 2.9 billion people.

Somalia has the prospect of becoming the trading gateway to Africa for the modern Silk Road.
