Eritrea- Igad relations by: @Erihistory

On Sept 6-7, 1993 Pres Isaias Afwerki led an Eritrean delegation to the IGAAD conference held in Addis Ababa. Eritrea was accepted as a member of the organization, during this meeting. The participating countries were Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan & Uganda.

On 27 April 2007, Eritrea notified IGAD of its decision to “temporarily suspend its membership” and “freeze its activities” in IGAD stating that

it’s not responsible to stay in that organization, when decisions are being made that are not legally or morally acceptable.

IGAD did not reply, to Eritrea's Letter. However, on June 14, 2008 at the 12th summit of IGAD's Leaders, the Leaders endorsed a recommendation for the establishment of a task force to convince Eritrea to reconsider her decision to suspend membership in IGAD.

Accordingly, on 14–15 Aug 2008 a delegation led by Foreign Ministers of Kenya, Moses Wetangula, South Sudan's, Deng Alor & IGAD Exe Sec Mahboub Maalim visited Eritrea & earnestly requested Eritrea to reconsider her suspension of membership from IGAD.

Pres Isaias informed IGAD's delegation that Eritrea suspended her membership because IGAD failed in Somalia's crisis, Sudan, Eritrea-Ethiopia/Eritrea-Djibouti disputes & IGAD’s failure to act when 3 Eritreans were kidnapped on the streets of Nairobi by the Kenyan authorities.

Eritrea then appointed Minister Arefaine Berhe as the focal person to deal with IGAD matters in Eritrea & Pres Isaias promised, that Eritrea would be committed to engage with IGAD.

On July 25 2011, the gov of Eritrea informed IGAD that it'd reactivate its membership of IGAD; stating that:

Eritrea's determination to make its contribution in cooperation with members to the achievement of peace and development, as well as the revitalization of IGAD.

On July 27, 2011 IGAD Exe Sec Eng Maalim expressed his happiness with Eritrea's bold decision to rejoin IGAD stating the move an historic & invited Eritrea to send 3 reps. to attend a 23–24 Aug 2011 meeting on the implementation of hydrological cycle observing system project.

On 24 Aug 2011, Eritrea's delegation leader, who sat to attend the 40th extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers was told that he would not be allowed to sit at the meeting & was escorted out by the hotel’s security personnel. IGAD stated, Eritrea's membership was pending approval.

While IGAD treated Eritrea as a new member to be readmitted, IGAD Heads of States discussed Eritrea (in Eritrea's absence) & passed a resolution on Eritrea-Djibouti dispute on Nov. 25, 2011 & called for the full implementation of UN sanction on Eritrea on Jan 27, 2012.

In the 17 years of the revitalized IGAD- from 1996- the Heads of State & Government held 22 Summits and out of these 11 were held after 2008. Ethiopia, chaired all of them. Source: @igadsecretariat

Kenya president: Russia's unjustified war on Ukraine must be stopped
29.03.2023 07:43

The Russian Federation's war against Ukraine must be stopped, and the positions of individual African countries on the issue should not be equated with that of the whole of Africa.

That’s according to Kenya’s President William Ruto, who spoke in Berlin at a joint press conference following a meeting with Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"The war in Europe must end, the aggression against Ukraine is not justified by anything," Ruto said. At the same time, he noted that the positions of individual countries in Africa should never be equated with the position of the whole continent.

According to Ruto, a threat to peace anywhere in the world is a threat to global peace, too.

He noted that the position of his state is based on what citizens believe in: respect for the UN Charter, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and global rules-based society.

Olaf Scholz, in turn, thanked Kenya for their stance on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

"This is a very clear, very brave position, it is important for global security," said German chancellor.

It should be noted that Kenya last November (when it was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council) became one of the four African nations that supported the resolution calling on Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine.

In mid-January this year, William Ruto had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

AU expresses ‘deep concern’ over violence in Kenya protests

Tuesday, March 28, 2023

By Aggrey Mutambo

The African Union is calling for calm and restraint in Kenya following deadly protests by the opposition groups that saw deaths and rival gangs loot and destroy property.

AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed “deep concern” at violence that led to deaths and what he called interruption of certain economic activities in Nairobi and other cities in the country where supporters of opposition Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition led by their leader Raila Odinga were protesting.
The Chairperson urges all stakeholders to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation,
Faki said.

Mr Odinga’s supporters poured into the streets for the second week, protesting against the high cost of living and what they say is inherent opaqueness of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which Mr Odinga accuses of rigging him out of last year’s presidential poll in favour of eventual winner William Ruto. Dr Ruto’s victory was, however, confirmed by the Supreme Court in September after describing Odinga’s evidence as “hot air”.

Total support

The AU boss called for dialogue but also expressed total support for the Kenyan government. The AU observers had endorsed the election outcome last year.
In this regard, the Chairperson wishes to recall the successful conduct of General Elections in August 2022 in Kenya and the subsequent unanimous confirmation of the election outcome by the Supreme Court.
The protests turned deadly after two people were shot dead in Kisumu while goons attacked the property of Mr Odinga and his ally, former president Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenyatta’s farm was torched as goons looted his livestock and cut down trees.
