“መለያየታቸው” - That’s the beauty. It would be boring if all Ethiopian villagers build like Gurages or vice versa. Gurages build one large roof while others erect several small structures that are conjoined with each other. And all of them look beautiful in their own right.

Metal roof is a bad substitution to thatch roof unless it’s properly constructed. It’s hot during day time & very cold at night because it doesn’t retain or delay heat. Creating an interstitial space could mitigate the thermal issue but not everyone does that specially in small towns & villages. But people like tin roof because of the easy & quick construction & urban symbolism.

I don’t see why thatch roof should be limited to rural villages. Thatch roof houses get damaged due to neglect than have ever been lost to fire even when the open hearth is located in the middle of the room. But we have this illusion that thatched roofs burn easily & run down frequently. Even if that’s the case, there are techniques to minimize the risk of fire.

The truth is even if household members get enough sunshine out side of their huts, dark homes without enough sun light are unhealthy for they harbor insects, pests, rodents and are source of bacterial reproduction. Houses built with window are good for healthy living and also provides ventilations. The reason why infant and child mortality rate is heavy in the countryside of Ethiopia is because of earth floor, windowless huts, besides malnutrition and poor feeding habits. Also, add eye disease/trachoma/ which is very pervasive - lack of ventilation, CO2 (smoke). Most rural huts regardless of their structure and construction material are built almost all in all to protect from the weather (rain and sun).

ይህ ደሮ ትልቅ መለኮታዊና መንፈሳዊ ትርጉም ነበረው ። አይደለም ክብ (ክብ ማለት ወብ ማለት ነው) ቤት በቤቱ ዙሪያ የሚቆሙት 12 ወጋግራዎች 12ቱን ሃዋሪያት ተመስለው ነው የሚቆሙት ፣ ለምሳሌ ትክክለኛ የክስታኔ ጎጆ ቤት ልክ 12 ወጋግራዎች በዚሪያው አሉት ።

ማለትም ቤት ክብ የሆነበትና ቀጥሩ ሰማይ የመሰለበት ምክኛት አለው ። ለምሳሌ በቆርቆሮና በሳርም የሚሰሩ የጉራጌ ዛኒጋባ ቤቶች ሞላሌ ይባላሉ ። ማድቢትና እስቶሬጅ ናቸው እንጂ ሰው አይኖርባቸውም ። ስለዚህ ከተማን በሳር ዛኒጋባ ቤት አይሰሩም ። ከምነትም ለአንትሮሎጂም አንጻር። ከውቀትም አንጻር ኤስተቲክስ ዉበት የላቸውም !

In honesty, old Gojo style unless for tourism, traditional hotel as rural dwelling, it should be past for dwelling. I do promote traditional dwelling though, at the same time, new copy paste building is not necessarily safe also. If you have been inside Gojo, there are no rooms and all family live under one big rooms with no privacy,. That being said, the building systems with stones and bricks and metals, including korkoro is good in terms of safety from electricity that is being used to radiate and attack people currently globalists using it against populations. Current and previous governments of Ethiopia may have approved this to attack individuals in their dwellings. On the other hand, the brick and stone, is the best and safe quality dwelling people and churches used to be built on. You can still build great houses using local resources by being creative. Today real estate booming is for sale of profit building houses with cardboard style housing that easily attacks you with electricity. Otherwise, it would have been ok.

I am afraid, you’ve missed my point.

I said that the qualification of good or bad architecture shouldn’t be based on someone’s one-sided prior experience alone. As an example, I noted that Ethiopian rural households are out in the sunlight during most of the day and they don’t need as much windows as Europeans.

I didn’t say their house should be completely dark. If you have been in a village or visited Lalibela rock hewn churches, you would know what I was meaning. First, people don’t close their doors during the day. Second, just a small opening provides adequate light due to the direct sun radiation near the equator. So, I would never replicate the intensity of window fenestrations & artificial lighting used by the ferenejis.

If you walk by night in Addis the day after you landed there from Europe or US, it feels completely dark because your first impression is biased. But after a month or so, you’ll realize how ferenjis light pollution has screwed up your brain. I visited a friend of mine in his 8th floor office in Addis a couple of years ago. Jeez! It was such a horrible experience. They have a wall-to-wall window but you can’t even sit next to it because it’s cold in the morning & a toaster in the afternoon. So, think about the consequences before you bust your walls.

በነገራችን ላይ ቤት ብቻ ሳይሆን የቤት ፈርኒቸርም ተምሳሳይ ነው ። በርጩማ፣ የጠፍር አልጋ፣ ጥራስ፣ የሴቶች ጊመ (የግብጾቹ head rest) እስከ መጉረሻው የቀንድ ማንኪያ ... ጥበብ ጥበብ ጥበብ !!!
