Ethiopia Using All Market Options Available in Djibouti: Ambassador Birhanu Tsegaye

Addis Ababa September 15/2022 (ENA)

Addis Ababa September 15/2022 (ENA) Ethiopia is using all market options available in Djibouti since the country’s have long-standing political and socio-economic relations, Ethiopia’s ambassador to Djibouti said.

Ambassador Birhanu Tsegaye said Ethiopia and Djibouti have maintained strong cooperation in different areas based on mutual benefit, trust, and respect.

This last Ethiopian budget year alone, delegations of three Ethiopian banks have conducted pre-investment and working visits in Djibouti to open branches, he revealed.

In addition, all the necessary arrangements have been made for a delegation of the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association to visit Djibouti.

“More than being neighbors, we are one nation; except for the fact that there are two countries and governments. The people are the same, they are similar in language, culture, and religion. They are also connected in business. The investment made in infrastructure by both governments is not made in any neighboring country. So, the relation is in good condition.”

According to him, Ethiopia’s manufacturing products and other goods are widely sold in the Djibouti market and activities have been underway to expand this based on the needs of the country.

Leather, leather products and other products are particularly in high demand in the Djibouti market, the ambassador pointed out.

In relation to livestock, the Djibouti government has given to Ethiopia a complete livestock holding facility and a quarantine facility was built at Milee by the Government of Ethiopia.

Among the activities underway to increase Ethiopia’s foreign trade in livestock is the setting up of system where livestock could be transported through Djibouti to the destination countries without unnecessary delay and abuse by illegal traders.

The Ethio-Djibouti railway is working on a large-scale, especially for bulky products, to cut cost and waste, the ambassador said.

“What we are currently working on is facilitating cargoes to export vegetable and fruits to European countries. This is contributing to the relationship between the countries. The two countries are connected not only by railway, but also by road, electricity and water.”

Ambassador Birhanu noted that Djibouti is a country known for standing by the Ethiopian people at any time and supporting the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of Ethiopia.

“The people of Ethiopia and Djibouti are united in all aspects. We are trying to strengthen this through various programs in tourism, investment and by organizing various events so that the relationship could be smooth and based on brotherhood,” he elaborated.

In addition to railway which strengthens the people-to-people relations, Ethiopian flies to Djibouti twice in a day, and some 2,000 trucks also enter Djibouti in a day.

Though the relationship between the two countries goes back to 1897, formal diplomatic relation started in 1923 when Ethiopia opened its General Consulate Office in Djibouti.

The first training camp of the Center of Innovation and Maritime Excellence, supported by Chinese companies, was opened Thursday in Djibouti.

DJIBOUTI CITY, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The first training camp of the Center of Innovation and Maritime Excellence, supported by Chinese companies, was opened Thursday in Djibouti City, the capital of Djibouti, with the theme featuring "Digital innovation and cross-border e-commerce."

Nearly 30 trainees from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda were selected to participate in the eight-day training program in Djibouti City. During this period, these young Africans will learn about company operation through lessons, thematic lectures, and seminars from Chinese and African experts, as well as visit the Doraleh Multi-purpose Port and the Djibouti International Free Trade Zone built by Chinese enterprises.

Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh spoke highly of the importance of education and training in the cooperation between Djibouti and China. The establishment of the center "is undoubtedly a new step" in Djibouti-China cooperation, the president said in a video message at the opening ceremony.

The country's Minister of Higher Education Mohamed Ahmed Nabil said the project provides Djiboutian youth, and African youth in general, with the opportunity to master innovative tools for e-commerce, which is in progress in Africa.

Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Hu Bin said China highlights the promotion of African youth entrepreneurship and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises as priority targets, adding that the center is part of laudable pragmatic measures to carry out the objectives of capacity building and human exchange envisaged in the nine programs announced during the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in Dakar, capital of Senegal last November.

The center is a non-profit capacity-building project aimed at enhancing the leadership and entrepreneurship of Djiboutian and East African youth, contributing to the "Djibouti Vision 2035" to promote private sector innovations and self-employment. Funded by China Merchants Foundation and operated by Djibouti Chinese Enterprise Association, it is planned to be a platform to provide services like training, mentoring, and networking.

Abyssinia hoe, Djibouti didn’t face too many hiccups by Ethiopia’s successive regimes like Eritrea.
Eritrea is not war mongering state.
It is a victim of your evil previous leaders.
Had we had peace like Ethiopia, Djibouti and the whole baboon African nations, considering we had all the political, social and economical infrastructure jump start right after the Italians left, we could have been par with your master western countries.
Now that we are at the 11th hour of destroying the most evil Ethio woyane regime and hopefully the current Ethiopian govt keep its promises of peace (unlike woyane) the sky is the limit for both countries and people.

France is seeking to restore the influence it lost to China in Djibouti and thus it wants to strengthen its military ties with Djibouti, France and Djibouti signed defense accords in 1977, again in 2011 and are now renegotiating them. Under the new agreement, the annual rent for the military base will go up to $80 million a year from $50 million currently, Stolen money from Somalia is being used to pay the annual rent for the military bases in Djibouti.

France, Japan, Italy, Spain and China alone steal $1.5 billion worth of fish a year from the rich waters of Somalia.

Translation to english
  • We have a historic and strategic relationship with Djibouti.

With our Djiboutian partners, we want to renew our defense relationship. Between now and the end of the year, we will make the next agreement that binds us to strengthen it.

Djibouti is using its geostrategic location to its advantage in maintaining good relations with thieves, China, the United States, Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany, France as none are willing to lose Djibouti to the others.

Ismaïl Omar Guelleh understands the geostrategic importance of Djibouti.

S. Sudan to build harbour in Djibouti as onslaught on Mombasa port continues

South Sudan has bought a piece of land in Djibouti for the construction of a harbour in its latest effort to find an alternative to the port of Mombasa which is facing an onslaught from Dar-es-Salaam.

South Sudan has bought three acres of land at the port of Djibouti for the construction of a facility that will handle its import and export goods as Juba seeks to cut reliance on Mombasa.

The latest development comes just two months after the Chamber of Commerce in South Sudan said it will shift its cargo to the port of Djibouti, which it termed as convenient for the Africa’s youngest State.

“We have been only using Port Sudan and Mombasa but recently, we have decided to go to Djibouti and as I am speaking to you, we have land in Djibouti,” South Sudan Minister for Petroleum Puot Kang Chol is quoted by local media.

The minister said the land was procured by the Ministry of Petroleum for the purpose of exporting the country’s crude oil as well as use it on imported goods. If effected, the move will hit the port of Mombasa given that Juba is one of Kenya’s largest clients.

Mombasa has been the main route for all consignments destined to the landlocked country with South Sudan importing nearly all of its cargo through the Kenyan port.

Mr Chol said they were ready to facilitate and stock goods destined for South Sudan through Djibouti.

“If any of you have goods, and you want to bring them through Djibouti, we have a land, we will have a space for you to accommodate your materials [or] whatever you want to bring,” said the official.

South Sudan is the second country in terms of cargo throughput volumes at the Mombasa port after Uganda, accounting for 9.9 percent of transit volumes. Uganda accounts for 83 percent of all throughput cargo followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Rwanda at 7.2, 3.2 and 2.4 percent in that order.

Kenya Ports Authority managing director John Mwangemi said South Sudan is one of their largest clients but they can choose a preferred facility. “I am not aware of the development in South Sudan but the government there can make a choice on which port to use,” said Mr Mwangemi.

The announcement by South Sudan comes just a few days after President William Ruto issued a directive for all inbound cargo to be cleared in Mombasa, dealing a blow to the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Naivasha.

Kenya allocated South Sudan land in Naivasha for the construction of a dry port, which would see goods destined to Juba cleared at the ICD facility to save truckers the long journey to Mombasa. Kenya has also allocated a piece of land to Uganda to clear its goods in Naivasha.

Dr Ruto promised during the election campaigns to return the port services to Mombasa if elected as President in the August election.

Ethiopia reports more foreign direct investment

Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2022-09-21 02:09:00

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia attracted about 3.31 billion U.S. dollars in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Ethiopian 2021/2022 fiscal year which ended on July 7, the Ethiopia Investment Commission (EIC) disclosed Tuesday.

In a press statement, EIC said 168 investors took out investment licenses during the 2021/2022 fiscal year, with 100 investors taking out manufacturing sector investment licenses, 62 investors taking out investment licenses in the services sector, and six others getting investment licenses in the agricultural sector.

EIC also said Ethiopia earned 202.5 million U.S. dollars from industrial parks products exports in the 2021/2022 fiscal year. The export earnings showed an increase of 24.4 million U.S. dollars when compared to the 2020/2021 fiscal year.

In recent years, Ethiopia has embarked on industrial parks' construction and commissioning activities, as part of a broad economic strategy to make the country a light manufacturing hub in Africa by 2025.

I think the government is lying through its teeth but it's good strategy to attract foreign direct investments.
