Kuleba on Zelensky's visits: We'll bring everything we need for Ukraine's victory

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited London, Paris and Brussels for the sake of tanks, long-range missiles, warplanes for Ukraine and punishment for Russia.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said this in a post on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
"In less than 48 hours, President Zelensky visited London, Paris and Brussels. For the sake of tanks, long-range missiles, fighter jets and punishing Russia for the evil it has brought to our land. And for this one-and-a-half days in all three capitals, I constantly thought about our soldiers in the trenches near Bakhmut, Kreminna, Huliaipole and our citizens in the occupied territories who should know: all this will come," Kuleba said.
Kuleba said that behind the scenes of the EU summit, decision-makers declared their commitment to find a legal and viable way to freeze Russian funds for compensation, punish Putin for aggression, and provide everything necessary for Ukraine's victory, including aircraft.
"We will bring everything we need for our victory. I have already spoken about it and I repeat it absolutely responsibly. There are still many discussions ahead, technical problems that have to be solved with partners, logistics and supply stability. But all this will come. And this will be a victory," the minister concluded.
President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting Brussels on Thursday, February 9. On February 8, Zelensky visited the United Kingdom, where he met with King Charles III and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as well as with Ukrainian military personnel undergoing training there. In the evening, he arrived in Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Reznikov: We are ready for Russia’s offensive, preparing counteroffensive

Last year has proven that Ukraine is able to not only stop the advance of Russian forces but also defeat them on the battlefield.
That’s according to Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine’s Defense Minister, who spoke in an interview with Forbes.
“Right now, there is a process of amassing resources on both sides. Each side is ready to take the initiative, and we’re waiting. We're ready for an offensive by the Russians and we're preparing a counter-offensive. Our key goal in this war is to win by freeing all temporarily occupied territories, liberating our people and holding responsible those accountable before an international tribunal. We believe that together with the entire civilized world, we can do this. We have proved this past year that Ukraine is able not only to stop the Russian army but to defeat it,” Reznikov said.
According to the minister, Ukraine could win over Russia due to the weapons provided by Western partners.
“No one believed that David would defeat Goliath but it happened thanks to that stone in a sling. In our case, David, with the help of the weapons from our friends, will defeat Goliath,” Reznikov stressed.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov of Ukraine said that following the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to Brussels, the “panzer fist” for Ukraine would strengthen, set in a few months to be able to resolve the tasks, according to plan conceived by Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi.

Sustainable peace in Ukraine possible only in line with UN Charter - Borrell

Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has serious implications for the whole world, which needs peace to be restored, but stable and lasting peace in Ukraine is possible only in compliance with the provisions of the UN Charter, with respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of any UN member state.
That’s according to the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, who addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"We need a peace grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter, that is why we are [here] in this very hall. This is what the resolution – presented by Ukraine – is about.(...) I want to stress it: this war against Ukraine is not “a European issue”. It is not about “the West versus Russia. No, this illegal war concerns everyone: the North, the South, the East, the West. The whole world. We are here today to reiterate our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as for any member of the United Nations," Borrell emphasized.
He recalled that this week marks a year since Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, launched a criminal invasion of Ukraine in a gross violation of international law and basic principles of the UN Charter.
"Sovereignty. Territorial integrity: these are the principles that Russia is attacking in Ukraine, every day. These are also the principles we have to uphold everywhere, every day. If we do not condemn and stop Russia’s actions in Ukraine today, this will increase the risk for any other country, elsewhere in the world, to face a similar aggression. No one can feel safe in a world where the illegal use of force would be normalized," the politician added.
He noted that Article 51 of the UN Charter gives Ukraine an inalienable right to defend itself, like any other member of the UN. Ukraine has the right to defend itself and its population against daily attacks and shelling by the Russian army. The European Union supports President Zelensky's peace formula, and will try to ensure the widest possible international support for the draft resolution presented by Ukraine, as this document paves the way to sustainable and lasting peace, according to Borrell.
"The European Union has always been a peace project. We have been quite successful in bringing peace to the European continent and promoting it around the world. It is central to our DNA; it is in our origin. And when it comes to Ukraine, the real questions today are: what kind of peace? Yes, peace, but what kind of peace? Yes, end the war: how do we end the war? How to achieve this peace? The first obvious step for peace is for Russia to stop its attacks and [it] must end all hostilities and withdraw its forces and military equipment from Ukrainian soil. And it must do it immediately, completely and unconditionally," the EU High Representative emphasized.
He noted that, until Russia stops its aggression, the European Union will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine in its self-defense needs, which is also in line with the principles of the UN Charter. The EU will keep providing Ukraine with humanitarian and financial assistance, and will work to hold Russia accountable for its actions and war crimes committed in Ukraine.
Borrell welcomed the efforts of the UN Secretary General toward a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and emphasized that international support for Ukraine's right to self-defense and efforts to find lasting peace are not incompatible – on the contrary, they complement and strengthen each other. In this context, the High Representative of the EU noted that the draft resolution on the peaceful settlement in Ukraine had been developed with full transparency and inclusiveness, and thanked the UN member states for the additions and amendments. These opinions, which were made in a spirit of goodwill, were taken into account and significantly strengthened the draft resolution.
At the same time, the High Representative of the EU resolutely rejected the attempt of Belarus officials to distort the presented document by introducing manipulative amendments that ignore the facts on the ground and do not reflect Russia's unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine.
"These amendments are not made in good faith... We will vote against these amendments and call on all United Nations member states to do the same and to support the draft resolution tabled by Ukraine," Borrell said.
He recalled the words of the UN Secretary General that today the world needs peace, but such peace must be in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. The time has come for every member of the UN to cast their vote in favor of the corresponding resolution.
As reported, on February 24, the UN General Assembly will hold a vote on the draft resolution, which emphasizes the need to achieve a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace in Ukraine as soon as possible. The vote will be preceded by two days of speeches by dozens of UN member states.

Kuleba: Russia must be removed from UNSC

Russia’s unprovoked, barbaric war on Ukraine has forced the world to confront many unsettling questions. One of the most important is: Where is multilateral diplomacy when you need it?
That’s according to an oped by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, published by The Hill.
“What is the purpose of having an array of rather costly international organizations and fora when they do not fulfill their two key tasks — preventing wars and stopping them once they erupt? It’s not the first time the world is asking these questions,” Kuleba wrote.
“Can the rule-based world survive if a country occupying a seat as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (i.e. one of the five countries tasked with protecting the world) tramples upon it in the most demonstrative, outrageous manner?” he went on to ask.
The minister recalled that over the past year, Russia has invaded a neighboring country, attempted to annex its territory, systematically shelled residential areas, obliterated entire cities and villages, raped, looted, committed genocide and implemented probably the largest campaign of forcible transfer of children in modern history.
“Russia didn’t just breach peace — it tore it to shreds,” Kuleba stressed.
Reflecting on history, Kuleba reminded that the UN was founded in 1945, when most of Europe and many other parts of the world laid in ruins. The organization’s mission includes protecting common rules that ensure that bigger and stronger countries do not invade smaller ones, do not annex their territory and do not carve them up, the foreign minister noted.

“The rule of law was supposed to replace the principle of ‘might makes right.’ For that to happen, the nations of the world agreed to give five powerful nations a special responsibility to uphold international peace and security. Those five were the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France and China,” wrote Kuleba.
The top diplomat referred to them as “the judges of the world” with solemn responsibility to ensure peace and cooperation. He underlined that “one of the judges has gone rogue” by unleashing a war on Ukraine and challenging the world’s very existence instead of safeguarding international peace, becoming an aggressor instead of being a protector, and becoming a disease instead of being a cure.
Kuleba recalled that this is not an isolated instance as Russia put itself above and beyond rules a long time ago — by attacking Georgia in 2008, by threatening Moldova, by illegally annexing Ukrainian Crimea in 2014, by meddling in U.S. domestic politics, by weaponizing energy and information, by inculcating its own population with the ideology of militarism and imperialism, by systematically using illegal drugs in international sports, by sending its Wagner mercenaries to destabilize and exploit Africa.
The oped asks if the world needs a “judge” like that: “The scope of Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine, its cruelty and disregard for humanity, make this one of the most pressing questions facing humankind.”
Not only did Russia invade its neighbor in a manner that brought back memories of World War II but it also tried to “freeze to death” the entire Ukrainian nation by attacking its power and heat generation during the winter of 2022-23. Moreover, it threatens to use nuclear weapons, and its state-owned media preaches genocide of the Ukrainian people, Kuleba wrote.
“We arrived at this dark point because Russia was allowed to believe it had total impunity. This started with Russian representatives illegally usurping the USSR’s seat at the United Nations Security Council in December 1991. Not a single legal procedure defined by the UN Charter was upheld,” wrote the foreign minister.
He explained that a “simple change” of the Soviet name plate to the Russian one was the largest diplomatic fraud of the 20th century.
“Let me reiterate what I said at the United Nations Security Council in February: Russia has turned the seat of a permanent member into a throne of impunity. We are now dealing with the consequences of the breach of rules that happened 32 years ago,” the oped reads.
Today, Russia is “neither a judge nor a solution” to any of the world’s problems. “Russia’s war must end with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s clear defeat. But it must also bring about a fundamental rethinking of the global security system and a reform of the international bodies tasked with upholding and restoring peace,” Kuleba wrote.
He emphasized that “Russia never legally acquired its status as a permanent UN Security Council member and must lose its seat in this esteemed chamber.”
“Until that happens, the criminal in a judge’s seat will continue to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the whole United Nations system,” concluded Kuleba.

Kenya president: Russia's unjustified war on Ukraine must be stopped

The Russian Federation's war against Ukraine must be stopped, and the positions of individual African countries on the issue should not be equated with that of the whole of Africa.
That’s according to Kenya’s President William Ruto, who spoke in Berlin at a joint press conference following a meeting with Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"The war in Europe must end, the aggression against Ukraine is not justified by anything," Ruto said. At the same time, he noted that the positions of individual countries in Africa should never be equated with the position of the whole continent.

According to Ruto, a threat to peace anywhere in the world is a threat to global peace, too.
He noted that the position of his state is based on what citizens believe in: respect for the UN Charter, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and global rules-based society.
Olaf Scholz, in turn, thanked Kenya for their stance on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

"This is a very clear, very brave position, it is important for global security," said German chancellor.
It should be noted that Kenya last November (when it was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council) became one of the four African nations that supported the resolution calling on Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine.
In mid-January this year, William Ruto had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that Ukraine will definitely liberate its temporarily occupied territories so, if the Russians fail to pull out, they will be destroyed.
Ukraine’s President told journalists this during a trip to Yahidne village, Chernihiv region, on the occasion of the anniversary of its liberation from Russian invaders, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"As for our progress on the front, I cannot say when we will be ready for very specific things. But we are preparing to be strong on the battlefield and de-occupy our land. It is difficult to say how and when this will be done. I will not talk about specific things because we cannot give the terrorists from Russia the opportunity to prepare our tools toward to liberation. But we will do it, and they should be aware of that. As reported, on the anniversary of the liberation of Yahidne village, Chernihiv region, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the school where Russian invaders held civilians hostage for almost a month.
On March 3, 2022, Russian occupants entered Yahidne, Chernihiv region. They kicked out residents from their homes and herded them into a school basement. In total, the Russian military held a 197-square-meter school basement, 367 people, including 50 children and several infants, the youngest just one in a half months old. Eleven villagers died, unable to survive the inhumane conditions, and 10 more were shot by Russian invaders.
In June 2022, law enforcement officers charged eight Russian soldiers with the killing of civilians in Yahidne.

Ukraine still has a long and challenging path towards its victory over the occupiers.
The relevant statement was made by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi in an interview with Dmytro Komarov’s special project ‘Year. Off-screen’, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“I can see what should be done to win, but I know for sure that there is still a very long and difficult path to victory. I hope that God will be on our side, and victory will definitely be ours. As of today, what is happening and what we are holding on to are the Ukrainian people. These are a Ukrainian soldier and a sergeant, a Ukrainian officer, who die and are maimed every day, but hold their positions,” Zaluzhnyi told.
In his words, Ukrainians were put in such conditions, when the invaders came from the Russian Federation and from the territory of Belarus to kill their wives, their children, destroy their houses. And these people, filled with the idea of protecting their loved ones, their land, went to defend them.
“We have lost many people so far, staff commanders. The war is started by military professionals but finished by teachers, engineers, accountants. This is what is happening now,” Zaluzhnyi noted.
According to the Commander-in-Chief, not only the heroism of Ukrainians but also the use of advanced technologies and more effective equipment will lay the basis for Ukraine’s victory. Zaluzhnyi expressed confidence that Ukraine would definitely win.
“But, for now, everything rests on the shoulders of ordinary people. All the victories that had been achieved – they were won with the lives of our Ukrainians who had laid down their lives, liberating Kherson, liberating the Chernihiv region, the Sumy region, Kyiv and the Kyiv region,” Zaluzhnyi added.
Meanwhile, Russia does not value human lives.

Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov has said that the Russians' blowing up of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant is a new stage of Russian aggression.
He said on Twitter, according to Ukrinform.
"The blow-up of the Kakhovka HPP by russians is a fundamentally new stage of russian aggression. President Zelensky visits Snake Island, pays tribute to Ukrainian heroes
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has visited Snake [Zmiinyi] Island, paid tribute to Ukrainian heroes, and expressed gratitude to everyone who has been fighting against Russian aggression for the last 500 days.
The relevant video was posted by the Head of State on the social media pages, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Today we are on Snake Island, our Snake Island, which will never be conquered by the occupier, same as the whole of Ukraine. Because we are a country of the brave. Today we have honored our Ukrainian heroes, all the warriors who fought for this island, who liberated it. And although this is a small piece of land in the middle of our Black Sea, it is a great proof that Ukraine will regain every part of its territory! From here, from this place, I want to thank each of our warriors for these 500 days! Our Armed Forces, our intelligence, border guards, the National Guard, the Security Service of Ukraine, the National Police, our signalmen, our people. Thank you to everyone who fights for Ukraine,” the President of Ukraine said.
According to Zelensky, the freedom that all Ukrainian heroes of different times wanted for Ukraine and which should be won right now will be a tribute to all those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
“We will definitely win,” the Head of State stressed.
In addition, President Zelensky left an inscription on Snake Island’s signpost.
A reminder that Ukraine’s Defense Forces liberated Snake Island from Russian invaders on June 30, 2022.

The commander of the operational-strategic group "Tavria", Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, has so far acknowledged the modest successes of the operation of the ZSU, particularly in the “South”.

Ceremonial events dedicated to Independence Day take place in Kyiv’s Sophia Square

The ceremonial events dedicated to Independence Day of Ukraine have taken place in Kyiv’s Sophia Square with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, foreign high-ranking officials and the military.
Ukrainian government officials, military command, heads of religious denominations, and diplomats were also present at the events, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
The ceremonial events started with the performance of the National Anthem of Ukraine and the speech delivered by the Head of State.
“Thirty-two years of continuous independence, which will continue and will not be broken, and which Ukrainians will not let go of their hands,” Zelensky said.
The Head of State emphasized that Ukrainians will definitely win.
“We remember what the Ukrainian people went through. We see what is threatening. We are fighting against the enemy and we know that we can win and we will win. Ukrainian children in Ukrainian squares and streets will celebrate independence in the same way, our grandchildren will celebrate, their grandchildren will celebrate in the same way together with friends of our state, with allies and partners of Ukraine, whom Ukraine will always choose on its own,” Zelensky stressed.
President Zelensky presented state awards, mainly to the military, as well as handed over battle flags to military units and awards ‘For Courage and Bravery’.
In addition to the President of Ukraine, congratulatory speeches were delivered by President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre, and Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić.
The leaders of Lithuania and Portugal delivered their speeches in Ukrainian.
Those present at the ceremonial events observed a minute of silence in memory of all Ukrainian heroes of different times, who had given their lives for Ukraine.
A reminder that, on August 24, Ukraine marks its Independence Day.

Ukraine's newly appointed defense minister, Rustem Umerov, has promised to do his best for Ukraine's victory.
Umyerov reported this on his Facebook page, according to Ukrinform
"This is a challenge, and at the same time, this is a duty for me as a citizen and a worthy son of my nation. Our main goal is victory. I will do everything possible and impossible for Ukraine's victory — when we liberate every centimeter of our country and all of our people," Umerov said.
He added that he would also make every effort to return all those who are in captivity, including children, prisoners of war, political prisoners, and civilians.
"We will return normal and dignified life to Ukrainian cities, which, unfortunately, are temporarily occupied. We know that people are waiting for us there. Because these are our people and our territories. The opposition of one person is the opposition of the whole country. Forty-two million Ukrainians stand behind every soldier. Behind every soldier is a Ministry that will do all to protect all our people. It is our people, their lives and dignity that are our priority and highest value. Today Ukraine is the free people of the free world who defend the fundamental values of democracy and human rights. We fight for it! And our plan is victory! Without any nuances and discussions. Glory to Ukraine!" Umerov said.
He also thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the opportunity to take charge at the Defense Ministry, as well as his colleagues from the parliament for their trust.
The Verkhovna Rada appointed Rustem Umerov as Ukraine's defense minister on September 6.
