The Guardian has reported that TPLF has imposed sanctions on brokers that transfer money to the region and will snatch money from money transferers at check stations. The report indicates that money transporters are struggling to get money into the region because of the border restrictions. The main source of income for many residents is money that is sent to relatives outside of Tigray through money intermediaries. Money transporters pay 30 to 50 percent of the money they transfer.
