Ras Teklehaymanot of Gojjam Amhara Solomonic Dynasty

Ras Tekle Haimanot of Gojjam

Nigus Tekle Haimanot, King of Gojjam, heir to the Gojjam branch of the Imperial Solomonic dynasty. Formerly known as Dejazmatch Addal, he was made a Ras by Wagshum Gobeze Emperor Tekle Giorgis II

following his marriage to that Emperor's sister, the formidable Woizero Laquech Gebre Medhin. After Tekle Giorgis II was deposed by Yohannes IV, Ras Adal quickly pledged his loyalty to the new Emperor and was named King of Gojjam and Keffa with his baptismal name of Tekle Haimanot. Negus Menelik of Shewa challenged Tekle Haimanot's claim over Keffa, and the two met in battle at Embabo during which Tekle Haimanot and his sons were taken defeated and taken captive to Menelik's capital at Entoto. Menelik ordered that every royal dignity be accorded his prisonesrs. What emerged was a deep and lasting friendship between the two kings that would last through the rest of their lives. Yohannes IV however was enraged that his two vassal kings had fought over a title rather than appeal to him, and he summoned both. He confiscated the war booty seized by Menelik, and contemptuously returned the King of Gojjam's crown to him in a bread basket, offending both of them. The two kings formed a secret alliance against Emperor Yohannes, and eventually raised a rebellion. Yohannes IV marched into Gojjam and crushed the forces of Tekle Haimanot, but did not capture the King. He was about to turn his attentions to Shewa, when news arrived that the Mahdists had sacked the city of Gondar and burned it's churches. Yohannes marched north instead and was killed fighting the Mahdists at Mettema.

Tekle Haimanot of Gojjam recognized Menelik II as Emperor of Ethiopia promptly upon his proclamation and was among the first to rally to him. Menelik II reconfirmed him as King of Gojjam, and Tekle Haimanot became a loyal supporter of Menelik II after his ascent to the Imperial throne.

Tekle Haimanot was a leading commander at Adwa against the Italians. His relationship with his sons however was difficult, particularly with his two elder sons Bezabih and Bellew who rebled and then tried to enlist the aid of Menelik against their father. Menelik advised the princes to reconcile with their father and be obedient sons, earning even deeper gratitude from the King of Gojjam.

Ras Bezabhih Tekle Haimanot would marry Woizero Zenebework Mikael, granddaughter of Menelik II, daughter of Ras (later King) Mikael of Wollo, and sister of Lij Iyasu. She was only twelve when she married the much older Ras, and died in childbirth the following year.

Upon Tekle Haimanot's death, a four way struggle ensued between his sons, Bezabih, Belew and Seyoum (renamed Hailu), and his widow Laquech Gebre Medhin for control of Gojjam. Although initially partitioned between the three sons, the eventual successor to Gojjam would be his youngest son Seyum (renaimed Ras Hailu Tekle Haimanot).
