JUBA – South Sudan plans to use Djibouti Port as an import route for goods from the international markets.

Deputy Chairperson for Chamber of Commerce, Lado Lukak Legge, said plans are underway to divert trade from Mombasa port to Djibouti.

“We are in talks with Djibouti authorities so that we can connect Djibouti, Ethiopia, and South Sudan so that we can be able to use Djibouti port through Ethiopia,” Lukak said during a networking business seminar for Ethiopian traders organized by the embassy in Juba on Thursday.

Lukak said it will be easier and cheaper to import goods through Djibouti port.

“Djibouti is near to South Sudan compared to Mombasa Port in Kenya and the government of Djibouti is willing to strengthen trade ties with South Sudan and Ethiopia,”

Lukak called upon the government of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and South Sudan to build roads linking these countries to ease the transportation of goods.

“We want roads linking Djibouti to Ethiopia and South Sudan to be so that we will be able to use Djibouti port to reduce dependence on Kenya’s Mombasa.”

“We would like the government of both countries to strengthen their bilateral ties and to provide access to South Sudan to use Port of Djibouti to export goods and other essential commodities.”

South Sudan receives much of its imports from the port of Mombasa in Kenya through Uganda.

Traders’ businesses have long complained of losses caused by the congestion-plagued port.

Who can blame South Sudan? Landlocked Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan are suffering due to Kenya (and Tanzania) high levels of corruption, delay in customs clearance and theft of goods in Mombasa port, Moreover, Mombasa port is not only the most inefficient in the World but also key entry points favoured by the drug traffickers in Africa, where the smuggling of cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants is on the rise, So, this is a very smart move, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi would follow suit.

Djibouti has proved itself to be a very reliable and trustworthy country.

Theft, corruption a drawback for Kenya hauliers

By Helen Nyambura-Mwaura February 13, 2010

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Corruption at Kenyan weighbridges and insecurity for cargo are the biggest challenges for transporters hauling cargo from Mombasa port to neighbouring countries, a leading transporter said on Saturday.

Mombasa port is the gateway to most of east Africa and most cargo offloaded in Mombasa has to be trucked to Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, south Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo because the train service is irregular.

“The major problem we have is security: hijacking of the trucks. That is the most serious problem right now. They will hijack your truck, offload it and abandon it.”

Cargo theft on Northern Corridor still major threat to regional trade

The Coast security committee said the cargo thefts and fuel siphoning from trucks plying Mombasa-Nairobi highway and the Northern Corridor are threatening the regional trade, warning that stern action would be taken against the culprits.

“Cargo worth millions of shillings is stolen along this trade route from trucks as drivers make stopovers. This crime should stop. Transporters from neighbouring countries are complaining that Kenyans are stealing their goods imported through the Port of Mombasa,”Mr Ochola said.

In 2016, theft cases were so rampant that some transporters rerouted to Tanzania.

Billions lost as cargo theft hits Kenya Ports Authority

COAST By Benard Sanga | November 29th 2015

The Port of Mombasa risks losing its competitive edge following a wave of cargo theft that has hit the supply chain along the Mombasa-Malaba highway, importers and transporters have warned.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) describes the theft of the cargo as “a grave concern” but says it cannot quantify the loss.

Kenya’s second-largest city becomes world's new drug trafficking hub

18/10/2019

The Kenyan city of Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa, has become the capital of a new drug trafficking route. Heroin from Asia and cocaine from Latin America now transit through Kenya, before heading to Europe. FRANCE 24’s team reports.

It’s an increasingly common sight off the East African coast, especially in Kenya: a ship from Pakistan with a cargo of heroin on board – containing poppies harvested in Afghanistan and refined in Pakistan. A few kilometres off the Kenyan coast, it’s joined by a small fishing boat.

Nothing has changed since then.

by SHARON MAOMBO 13 August 2021

They had stolen the goods from a trader while on transit to South Sudan, Kinoti said.

“The goods were received at the port of Mombasa, cleared and were on their way to their destination before they were diverted to Ruiru,” Kinoti said.

The stolen goods were in transit to South Sudan before they were diverted to Ruiru.

Djibouti has built seven world-class ports that have allowed it to become an international maritime transshipment hub connecting the Middle East, North Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, East Asia, the Horn of Africa and Europe, thanks to its strategic position on the bab el-mandeb strait where annually some 20 000 ships and 30 percent of world trade pass through, Nonetheless, Djibouti remains Africa’s top port on the global Container Port Performance Index.

Djibouti handles around 50 percent of Europeans and Asian transshipment vehicles.

It's all happening Eritrea’s doorstep.
