Middle East Container Ports Are the Most Efficient in the World

By WorldBank 26-2022

The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Container Port Performance Index for 2021 said in a report released on Wednesday that ports in the Middle East are the most efficient in the World, while Black African ports are the most inefficient in the World.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Port took the top spot on the list in 2021, with ports in Oman, Qatar and Abu Dhabi placing in the top five. China had three ports — Shanghai (Yangshan), Ningbo and Guangzhou — place in the top 10. Last year’s top port, Japan’s Yokohama, fell to No. 10.

Djibouti port has ranked 19th out of 370 in the global container port performance index (CPPI), making it the most efficient port in Black Africa. Djibouti also jumped 42 places in the World Bank’s latest Logistics Performance Index in 2021

The Moroccan port of Tanger-Med, in 6th place, is the highest ranked port in Europe and North Africa, while Egypt’s Port Said port has ranked 15th in Europe and North Africa.

The Port Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (171) is the best performing port in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Berbera in Somalia (184), Conakry in Guinea (242) and Mogadishu in Somalia (259)

“Inefficient ports represent a significant risk for many developing countries in that they can hinder economic growth, harm employment, and increase costs for importers and exporters. In the Middle East and Djibouti, heavy investments in container port infrastructure and technology are proving to be effective,” commented Humphreys.

The most efficient container ports in the world are located in the Middle East and China.

IPDC, Djibouti Ports and Freezone Authority agree to scale up cooperation

By fanabc.com - May 27, 2022

Addis Ababa, May 27, 2022 (FBC) – A delegation from the Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation (EIPDC) is paying a working visit in Djibouti in the light of the efforts to strengthen the Ethiopia-Djbouti trade and investment cooperation.

During the visit, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of Djibouti Ports and Freezone (DPFZA), MAbubaker Omar Hadi, and held discussions on various issues ranging from service to infrastructure and synchronization of digital systems.

The delegation has paid visits to Djibouti International Free Trade Zone, Dorale Multipurpose Port, PDSA, DDIP and SDTV.

The delegation has also made extensive discussions with CEO of Djibouti Port Community System (DPCS) underscoring the urgent need for integrating the system with EIPDC.

It is to be known that nearly 125 foreign and local investors operating inside the thirteen Industrial Parks in Ethiopia use Djibouti’s Port and Freezone to import their raw materials and capital goods as well as export their products to the global market.

In 2003 World Bank study found that most African landlocked countries are suffering due to their transit neighbours high levels of corruption, delay in customs clearance and theft of goods in ports..

Take corrupt Kenya, for instance, Kenya ports authority managing director who is facing corruption charges has resigned in March 2020 after a wave of massive theft of more than 2,000 containers loaded with assorted items destined for Uganda and Rwanda at Mombasa port, Tanzania, Mozambique, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa etc are another good examples of corrupt coastal countries in Africa.

Mombasa port is not only the most inefficient in the World but also key entry points favoured by the drug traffickers in east Africa, where the smuggling of cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants is on the rise, according to the United Nations.

Mombasa port has ranked 293 out of 370 in the global container port performance index (CPPI). That's how corrupt Kenya is.

phd. Jaegol,

Why r u mad because the GoldenLady wrote about the success of African Sister country success ..

if Eritrea want to become like Djibouti all they have to do is the same thing Assab Free zone. that means give up Assab to Ethiopia let Ethiopia invest on it.. that is what the Sister country did..

Doctor AbyssiniaLady

let me tell story even so u know it , let me repeat it for those Eritrean stone head...

Eritrean fought to separate from Ethiopia ...

the cover case was Ethiopia exploiting us, Ethiopia dominating us but the real cause was the Eritreans thought they got Assab port, since they got Assab port they will have Ethiopians by throat they can charge any price they want and Ethiopians they have pay because if not we shut them down. if this happened Eritrean figure it out they will live without working just by charging port fee .

the idiot dead donkey Amhara attitude also didn't help because they didn't play poker face , they exposed their card and crying if Eritrean saparated we going to die because we will lose Assab so the Eritrean 100% convinced that they have to break up to earn Assab income 100% to themselves without sharing with Ethiopians

then Meles skybuilder come and listen to Eritrean idiotic argument and told them go head let Assab be drinking hole for your Camel and left Assab port.. the Amhara go banana thinking that they will be choked . then the Great leader show them the alternative and the Djibouti port born...

When Ethiopians knocked the Djiboutian door , the Djiboutian didn't even hesitated the welcome Ethiopian and give them one port ... but the Djiboutian also didn't sit idle ... they build Djibouti port in world standard ..mind u the port build by Emirati multinational logistics company based in Dubai.... LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL here come the kicker the Emirati doesn't want black Muslim to make it rich so what they did was restricting the Djibouti from building other port ... at that time the Djiboutian have no choice to sign the deal and the port was built and when the time come for Djibouti to build another port the Emirati asking for the pound of flash and they hell no u will not build another port we going to lose business so don't build to keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep them in poverty... so the Djiboutian said no way this is our country we going to build YES, NO , YES NO, SO Emirati sued Djibouti guess who is a judge the British of course the British side with Emirati...

u know what happened the Djibouti said okay we have majority vote we own 75% so we buy u .. guess what the Emirati DP WORLD said no ..their intention was to stop the black people from development.... u know what the Djibouti leader did he change the law or the rule to allowed the Djibouti to build another port now Djibouti have 7 port ..

u guys might think contract is contract Djibouti should respect the contract.. okay let me tell u another story DP World should have only Djibouti port when they build the first port.. they have new comer to the game .. thanks to Djibouti port they make so much money now they go around the world and build 78 port ... u see they start out from Djibouit they end up world first player but they dont want the same for the black African so sometime we should break up unfair deal...

another important thing all 7 port build under Golden TPLF regime.......... no let go back to Eritrea, Eritrea lost all this because their stupidity... they have 4400 km of seacoast and Djibouti have only 120km seacoast and look how much the difference.. Djibouti will enter first world soon..

3rd Djibouti know where their bread come they don't mess up with Ethiopia .. they don't involved in politics... they knew they r jr, partner

4th and the most important thing is they have build free zone .. this 42 km free zone will bankrupt Eritrean what ever advantage they have ... this Djibouti they are so smart they even connected to Golden city by train . but the nearest port for the Golden city was ምፅዋ ... if Eritrean doesn't
benefit from this location advantage then the Djibouti will take the business not only that they also attracted Rwanda landlocked nation

5th the more Djibouti developed the more electricity need so Ethiopia will supply all electricity and make more money

6th Djibouti no body will touch her because they give station for all supper power who is going to touch them now.. so they will be the safest place to invest ..

7th i cry for Eritrea ..i really cry for Eritrean ... the Amhara really love them not because they r the closest port to Ethiopia but they r Christian the amhara will never want to deal with Djibouti the Muslim country if they had their choice , but their own blood Meles back stabbed Eritrean and deal with Djibouti now there is no turning back.. the Djibouti doesn't even need Ethiopia after this their economy is taking off they r hub for international market.. they handled 10 million cattle

8. again the Ethiopian the only advantage is to build more train all over Ethiopia and reduce the cost of oil by using hydro power and this make Ethiopian the cheapest transportation ... Kenyan build rain from their port to capital city but since the train use oil they didn't make money up to now .. here again Ethiopia have advantage to sale power to Kenya and use their port

Djibouti International Free Trade Zone

this free zone even might attract Ethiopian investors because the Djibouti have free tax to export to USA UNLIKE Ethiopia..

look their policy currency policy and other policy that make them more attractive the Ethiopia still can make money by selling power to Djibouti if everything fail

Not true. Djoubiti offers the worst service . Ethiopia should have it’s own port Assab and Adulis for Tigray. Ethiopia has a population of 120 million and can cheap skilled craft to make port services efficient. Djoubiti and Somali cannot as they are nomads and Muslims. Christian Ethiopia is clean and safe to serve all human beings. We need to encourage Ethiopia to own their own port.

The inferiority ridden Tigrinya, this thread is not about Tigrayans and TPLF, your nightmare, It's about World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence container port performance index 2021, As far as I am aware, desolated Asmara does not have a seaport, So buzz off nappy headed chimps.

EthioRedSea

Take your anti psychotic and hallucinations medicines on time and keep quiet!!

Djibouti port which is vital to the Ethiopian economy and a global trade transshipment hub provides a world-class logistics platform for shipping, It has been recognised as the top container port in Africa and 19th out of 370 globally by the World Bank and IHS Markit’s latest global Container Port Performance Index, Djibouti’s investment in ports and infrastructure development continues to pay dividends.

Without Djibouti port, the Ethiopian economy is doomed, It is the misery of being a landlocked country.

The CPPI 2022: Global Ranking of Container Ports

One of seven major ports in Djibouti.

Port of Djibouti is ranked 26th out of 348 most efficient container port in the world in the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Djibouti fell from 19th place in CPPI 2021 to 26th place in CPPI 2022.

  • The Port of Berbera is ranked 144th place, Berbera has climbed 40 positions from 184th place in CPPI 2021 to 144th place in CPPI 2022.
  • The Port of Mogadishu is ranked 221th place, Mogadishu has climbed 38 positions from 259th place in CPPI 2021 to 221th place in CPPI 2022. It's very well done indeed.
  • The Port of Mombasa is ranked 326th place out of 348 ports worldwide, Mombasa fell from 293th place in CPPI 2021 to 326th place in CPPI 2022 due to corruption, cargo theft from containers and drug trafficking.

The CPPI is an annual report that ranks container ports worldwide based on their operational efficiency. The report is based on data collected from more than 348 ports worldwide and covers over eighty percent of global container traffic, The ranking is intended to identify gap and opportunities for improvements for the benefit of key stakeholders in global trade, including government, shipping lines, ports and terminal operators, shippers, logistics companies and consumers.

  • Improving port efficiency is essential for unlocking Africa’s growth and development,” said Martin Humphreys, Lead Transport Economist at the World Bank. “Africa’s ports are vital gateways for trade and commerce. Their efficient operation is a key determinant in whether Africa achieves its economic potential.

And the saddest part of all is tiny Eritrea.

Although Eritrea is in very close proximity to the major maritime routes with a hundred thousand ships passing through each year, It is unfortunately a forgotten land and will remain a forgotten land by the maritime world, Thanks to the good for nothing dictator Isaias Afwerki.

Djibouti has become an important transshipment hub and a regional leader in terms of terminal productivity and in terms of successfully handling mega ships, It handles around 50 percent of Japanese and South Korean transshipment vehicles, This demonstrates the confidence that Japanese and South Korean shipowner have for the facilities in Djibouti.
