WHO chief censored on China's internet after calling zero-Covid unsustainable



(CNN)The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) is being censored on China's internet after questioning the sustainability of the country's zero-Covid policy.

The censorship on Weibo and WeChat, China's two largest social media platforms, targets WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus' comments that expressed rare disagreement with Beijing's policies.

"When we talk about the zero-Covid strategy, we don't think that it is sustainable, considering the behavior of the virus now and what we anticipate in the future," Tedros told a media briefing Tuesday, citing the increased transmissibility of Omicron.

"We have discussed this issue with Chinese experts and we indicated that the approach will not be sustainable...I think a shift will be very important," he said.

Rand Paul blocks bipartisan effort to swiftly pass Ukraine aid



(CNN)In a rare showing of public unity, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor to press for quick passage of a $40 billion aid bill for Ukraine but were blocked by GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky who is demanding changes to the legislation.
Despite the high-profile pressure from the two leaders, Paul refused to blink, meaning that Schumer will need to take procedural steps to overcome his objection, which could take several days, but will ultimately lead to passage of the supplemental spending bill sometime next week.
McConnell and Schumer on Thursday offered to allow a vote on Paul's amendment, but he insisted it be added to the underlying bill.

The change Paul is seeking would create a special inspector general to oversee how the Ukraine military aid is spent. Members from both parties broadly agree with that notion, but forcing a change to the bill at this stage would be very time consuming and would slow getting the needed aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainian military says Russian retreating from Kharkiv

The Ukrainian armed forces said in a brief update late Friday that Russian forces are focused on ensuring the withdrawal of troops from the northern Kharkiv region. Those troops have come under growing pressure from Ukrainian counter-attacks along a wide front to the west of their supply lines.

The fierce counterattack has taken back a number of villages in the area east of Kharkiv. Ukraine's advances threaten the symbolic embarrassment of pushing the Kremlin's forces back to their own border, while posing the strategic threat of cutting Russia's supply lines into Ukraine and its forces further south in the Donbas region. It has also revealed further evidence of apparent Russian atrocities, according to a CNN team on the ground.

The General Staff on Friday also reported more cross-border shelling far from the current area of hostilities in the northeastern region of Sumy -- as well as an airstrike against a village in the region.

In the east of Ukraine, the General Staff said there had been more artillery shelling of Ukrainian-held territory as the Russians tried to make progress towards Sloviansk in the Donetsk region, a key objective. The village of Nova Dmytrivka had come under fire, it said, as it has done since late April.

It also said that there had been airstrikes around Dolyna, which is 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Sloviansk and nearby Adamivka. Airstrikes in the area earlier this week damaged two religious sites, according to Ukrainian authorities.

In the Luhansk region, the General Staff said a Russian attack on the town of Zolote had been repulsed.
