The simmering conflict between Moscow’s military leadership and Yevgeny Prigozhin, the bombastic chief of private mercenary group Wagner, has dramatically escalated into an open insurrection that plunges Russia into renewed uncertainty.
Moscow's mayor said the capital is reinforcing security as Prigozhin claimed to have seized control of key military facilities in the Russian cities of Rostov and Voronezh Saturday.
Here's the latest:
Wagner claims control in Rostov: Prigozhin said in a video he is in Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia close to the Ukraine border, and that his forces have control of military facilities and the airfield there. He pledged to blockade Rostov and move on to Moscow if Russia's Defense Minister and top general did not meet with him in the city, where Russia’s Southern Military District is headquartered. He said his men are not stopping the officers from carrying out their duties. It comes after Prigozhin said his fighters were entering the Rostov region on Friday and that Russian Guards and military police have joined the Wagner group. CNN cannot independently verify his claims. Videos circulating on social media and geolocated to Rostov city show military vehicles on the streets and helicopters over the city Saturday morning. It is currently unclear whose command the vehicles are under the control of.
Claims of control in Voronezh: The Wagner group later said it had taken control of Russian military facilities in the city of Voronezh, in southwestern Russia, saying "the army switches to the side of the people." Earlier, the governor of Voronezh oblast said that "a convoy of military equipment is moving along the M-4 Don Federal Highway." The M-4 is a highway connecting Voronezh and Rostov-on-Don. Voronezh is directly north of the Rostov region.
Alleged helicopter attack: Prigozhin also claimed a helicopter fired at a civilian column and was downed by his forces, but did not give any further details. He accused the Russian military's chief of staff of ordering an aerial attack "in the middle of civilian cars." Later, he said that his units were hit by a helicopter on a highway. CNN cannot independently verify these claims.
Prigozhin accuses Russia of killing his forces: The Wagner chief accused Russia's military leadership of killing a "huge amount" of his mercenary forces in a strike on a camp and vowed to retaliate. "Many dozens, tens of thousands of lives, of Russian soldiers will be punished," Prigozhin said. "I ask that nobody put up any resistance." In a later Telegram post, Prigozhin said that his criticism of the military leadership was a “march of justice” and not a coup. Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied Prigozhin’s claims, calling it an “informational provocation."
Russia accuses Prigozhin of "armed rebellion": The Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s domestic intelligence service, responded by urging Wagner fighters to detain their leader and on Friday it opened a criminal case against the Prigozhin, accusing the mercenary force's chief of calling for "armed rebellion," the state news agency TASS reported. Russia's Ministry of Defense appealed to Wagner forces to "safely return to their points of permanent deployment," saying they were "tricked into Prigozhin's criminal adventure."
Russia steps up security: Moscow's mayor said "anti-terrorist measures" are being carried out in the city. A local journalist said the streets appear calm in Moscow, but that there is heightened security at government agencies. In the Russian city of Rostov, military vehicles could be seen driving the streets. Posts were organized on Saturday in the area of the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov where military personnel and law enforcement officers are keeping order, a TASS correspondent reported.

What is the significance of the Chonhar road bridge connecting Crimea with Russian-held parts of the southern Kherson region?

Chonhar bridge connects Kherson region with Crimea. It was the main bridge used to deliver supplies to the Russian troops there: 70% of military and civilian cargo to Crimea was going by that route.
The new route for the Russian military through Chaplynka is within closer reach of the Ukrainian artillery: The land corridor to the Crimea, which Russia was so proud to have created, is effectively cut off.
22 June 2023: Damages to Chonhar bridge after the rocket strike.
The entire flow of Russia’s military and food cargo, military equipment, fuel, lubricants and shells towards the occupied Crimea went through the so-called “land bridge”.
The cargo was moving via the road from Rostov-on-Don (Russia) through occupied Melitopol (Ukraine) and further to the Crimean peninsula, through the Chonhar bridges.
There is a train bridge in Chonhar, as well as 2 automotive bridges.
The distance from the Ukrainian-controlled territory on the right bank of Dnieper to this road is 110 km at its closest point.
Now that the bridges of Chonhar cannot be used as before because of damages, the flows of Russian military cargo are turning to another checkpoint - Armyansk - and will have to go through Chaplynka, which isn’t equipped for civilian traffic.
The distance to the Ukrainian-controlled territory there is only 50 km. The road can be hit by many weapons.
The quality of that road is also poor. It adds 100 km to the trip. The distance from the side of Ukraine is only 15-20 km at certain parts of the road. Even "Grad" rockets can reach it.
Previously, the supply of the occupied Crimea went along the Kerch bridge, but after a truck exploded there in October 2022, causing extensive damages to the bridge, trucks are no longer allowed on the Kerch bridge. The Kerch bridge connects mainland Russia to Crimean peninsula over the sea, from the side of Krasnodar region.
Tendar compiled a map of recent missile strikes by AFU in the rear of Russian troops.
A blow up of the railway bridge in Yakimovka, yesterday’s attack on the bridge across the Chonhar Strait, repeated explosions in the port of Berdyansk and at bases in the vicinity of Henichesk, in particular, in a huge storage warehouse in Rykovo.
All this is reminiscent of the campaign to retake Kherson in October-November 2022, but on a much larger scale.
Russian-occupied areas of the Zaporizhzhia region are systematically cut off from supplies.
And when Russia’s military logistics are sufficiently disturbed, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will start advancing.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy brings home Azovstal commanders from Turkey

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has returned home, from a visit to Turkey, with five commanders of Ukraine’s former garrison in Mariupol, a move Russia said violated the terms of a prisoner exchange deal engineered last year.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that Ankara had promised under the exchange agreement to keep the men in Turkey and complained that Moscow had not been informed of the move.
The five commanders, lionised as heroes in Ukraine, led last year’s defence of the southern port of Mariupol, the biggest city Russia has captured in its invasion. Thousands of civilians were killed inside Mariupol when Russian forces laid the city to waste during a three-month siege.
Zelenskyy on Saturday posted a one-minute video showing himself and other officials shaking hands and hugging the smiling commanders before they boarded a Czech aeroplane together.
“We are returning home from Turkey and bringing our heroes home,” said Zelenskyy, who met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks in Istanbul on Friday.
“Ukrainian soldiers Denys Prokopenko, Svyatoslav Palamar, Serhiy Volynsky, Oleh Khomenko, Denys Shleha. They will finally be with their relatives,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.
Kyiv had finally ordered the Ukrainian defenders, who held out for weeks in tunnels and bunkers under a steel plant, to surrender in May last year. Russia freed some of them in September last year in a prisoner swap brokered by Ankara under terms that required the commanders to remain in Turkey until the end of the war.
Zelenskyy gave no explanation for why the commanders were being allowed to return home now and there was no immediate comment from Turkey.
Many Ukrainians hailed the news on social media.
“Finally! The best news ever. Congratulations to our brothers!” Major Maksym Zhorin, who is fighting now in eastern Ukraine, said on Telegram.
‘Direct violation’
The Kremlin, however, accused Ukraine and Turkey of violating agreements by releasing the commanders.
“The return of the leaders of the Azovites from Turkey to Ukraine is nothing more than a direct violation of the terms of the existing agreements. Moreover, in this case, the terms were violated by both the Ukrainian side and the Turkish side,” said Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman.
“No one informed us about this. According to the agreements, these ringleaders were to remain on the territory of Turkey until the end of the conflict,” he said.
Peskov added that the release was a result of heavy pressure from Turkey’s NATO allies ahead of next week’s summit of the military alliance at which Ukraine hopes to receive a positive sign about its future membership.
In a ceremony alongside the men in the western city of Lviv, Zelenskyy thanked Erdogan for helping secure the soldiers’ release and pledged to bring home all remaining prisoners.
He said that before the outbreak of war, “many people in the world still did not understand what we are, what you are, what to expect from us and what our heroes are. Now everyone understands”.
Denys Prokopenko, one of the five commanders, told the gathering that his men “will have our word to say” in the counter-offensive launched by Ukrainian forces in the past month.
“The most important thing is that Ukraine has seized the strategic initiative and is advancing,” he said.
Analysts said the return of the soldiers could strain Turkey’s relations with Russia. Ankara has so far managed to maintain a delicate balancing act, even helping broker a deal with Russia last year that allowed the safe export of grain and fertiliser from Ukrainian ports.
“Turkey’s a member of NATO, which has been backing Zelenskyy and Ukraine in the war. But at the same time, Erdogan has maintained good relations personally with President [Vladimir] Putin of Russia,” Bulent Ali Riza, the founding director of the Turkey Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told Al Jazeera.
“Erdogan has not applied sanctions, unlike the other members of the Western alliance and he’s been able to do this successfully. Until now, he’s been able to broker the grain deal because he has connections with both sides. And yet, with these most recent moves that he has made – hosting Zelenskyy and then releasing the Azov fighters – is obviously going to be interpreted by Russia as heavily tilted to the other side,” Bulent said,
500 days of war
The repatriation of the commanders came as Ukraine marked the 500th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion. In honour of the day, Zelenskyy released a video of him visiting Snake Island, a Black Sea outcrop that Russian forces seized on the first day of the invasion last year and later abandoned.
Speaking from the island, Zelenskyy honoured the Ukrainian soldiers who fought for the territory and all other defenders of the country, saying that reclaiming control of the island is “great proof that Ukraine will regain every bit of its territory”.
“I want to thank – from here, from this place of victory – each of our soldiers for these 500 days,” the Ukrainian leader said. “Thank you to everyone who fights for Ukraine!”
United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken marked the 500 days by describing Russia as “the sole obstacle to a just and lasting peace” and promising to back Kyiv “for as long as it takes”.
France’s foreign ministry said the time frame “must bring Russia to the realisation that it is in an impasse and immediately stop its illegal war of aggression”.
The latest US pledge of support included plans to supply widely-banned cluster munitions. Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov promised the munitions would not be used in Russia.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said Ukrainian troops on Saturday “continued offensive operations” in two sectors in the southeast.
Officials said that a Russian rocket strike on the town of Lyman killed eight civilians and wounded 13 others early on Saturday. Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, posted images showing some of the dead, including a body lying under a bicycle and body fragments on the pavement next to a damaged vehicle, saying that “the Russian terrorists are continuing to strike civilians in Donetsk”.
Lyman is a few kilometres from the front line, where Russian troops have recently intensified fighting in the forests of Kreminna.
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, said in its latest intelligence update that the eastern town of Bakhmut captured by the Russians in May has seen some of the most intense fighting along the front during the last week.

Zelensky visits Dnipro after "good results" in counteroffensive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting the city of Dnipro amid reports of a large push by Kyiv’s forces less than a hundred miles south, along the Zaporizhzhia frontline.
“We started our working day in Dnipro. Field Staff in the area of responsibility of the Operational and strategic grouping of troops 'Tavria'. Situation at the front, course of offensive and defensive actions,” Zelensky posted on Telegram.
His visit and remarks come as Ukrainian forces continue their "offensive operation on Melitopol and Berdyansk axes, consolidating their positions, and inflict fire damage,” according to the military’s General Staff.
Kyiv adds combat power: It also follows comments from US officials that Ukraine has committed more forces to its counteroffensive in the southeast after nearly two months of slow progress, according to two US officials —a sign that they may have identified potential weaknesses in Russian defensive lines to exploit.
The newly committed units had been held in reserve until now. The military still has additional combat power in reserve, but this is the “main bulk” of the forces committed to the counteroffensive, one of the officials said.
In the southeast, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has broken through some elements of Russian defensive lines, the official said, and the reserve units have come in to capitalize on the opportunity.
Major push forward: On Wednesday, Ukraine appeared to have launched a major push south of Orikhiv, along the Melitopol axis, with Russian officials and bloggers saying Kyiv had committed up to 100 armoured vehicles to the offensive.
A member of the Russian-installed Zaporizhzhia military-civilian administration, Vladimir Rogov, wrote on Telegram that Ukrainian forces, backed by armored vehicles and tanks, had managed to “wedge in three sections of our first line of defense” near Robotyne.
Ukraine has yet to comment on the specifics of the push. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister, Hanna Maliar, said only that offensive operations along the southern front were “gradually advancing,” with similar, gradual progress also taking place further east in the area of Staromaiorsk.
Zelensky concluded his nightly address on Wednesday with a cryptic message that Ukrainian forces were seeing success at the front line.
"By the way, today our guys at the front had very good results. Well done,” he said. “More details later.”"

Explosion reported in Russian city of Samara
We're now hearing of another explosion within Russia - this time in the city of Samara.
A local MP claims the explosion was at Kuibyshev oil refinery, one of the largest refineries in the region.
The MP also says there were no reported casualties or serious damage.
It's not clear if this is related to the explosion we've just reported in Taganrog, about 30 miles from the Ukrainian border.
But unlike Taganrog, Samara is deep within Russian territory.
Samara sits over 530 miles east of Moscow, and around 500 miles northeast of the nearest border with Ukraine, in the Luhansk region.
Rocket explosion reported in Russia's Taganrog near Ukraine, Rostov governor says

A rocket explosion was reported in the Russian city of Taganrog, which is located in the southwestern Rostov region near the border with Ukraine, regional Gov. Vasily Golubev said on Friday.
Gobulev said in a Telegram post that a rocket had landed in the middle of the city.
“There are several victims, ambulances are handling the victims. Four people were slightly injured by broken glass. Information about the damage is being specified,” he said. There have been no deaths, he said.
Russian state agency RIA Novosti cited local emergency services as saying that at least 10 people were injured.
Some context: It’s believed to be the first time that Taganrog – some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the border with Ukraine — has been hit since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Zelensky congratulates Ukrainians on country's Independence Day

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Ukrainians on Thursday as the war-torn country marks its 32nd Independence Day.
"“A holiday of strong people. A holiday of people with dignity,” Zelensky said, according to a press release from the Presidential Office of Ukraine."
Calling “an independent Ukraine” what “we are fighting for,” Zelensky lauded the contributions from every citizen saying, “in a big war, there are no small deeds.”
He thanked all Ukrainians on the front lines along with the volunteers and families behind them. He also mourned the fallen soldiers, calling them “heroes who prevented us from losing Ukraine.”
Zelensky celebrated the “thousands of Ukrainian medics who save thousands of lives,” and the journalists, among others, who spread “the truth about Ukraine and this war in different languages.”
The president also assured Ukrainians “under occupation” who have “waited and will witness the return of Ukraine.”
August 24 marks the anniversary of Ukraine's 1991 declaration that it would break with the Soviet Union.

Ukraine retakes village of Andriivka near Bakhmut, military says

Ukrainian forces have retaken the village of Andriivka, south of the city of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian military brigade fighting in the area said Friday.
"It's official: The Third Separate Assault Brigade has liberated Andriivka. 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Federation - smashed to pieces!" the brigade said in a Telegram post.
"As a result of a lightning-fast operation, the Russian garrison of Andriivka was surrounded, cut off from the main forces and destroyed."
The brigade said fighting was ongoing and units "continue to consolidate their positions."
"Taking and holding Andriivka is our way to a breakthrough on the right flank of Bakhmut and the key to the success of the entire offensive," it added.
The Ukrainian and Russian sides have said that some of the most intense battles in the Bakhmut direction are happening south of the embattled city in the Andriivka area, as both sides strive to mark tangible progress.
The liberation of the village of Andriivka marks a symbolic and strategic victory for the Ukrainian forces, and comes after Wagner fighters left the Bakhmut area.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on its Facebook page Friday, "During the assault operations, they captured Andriivka, Donetsk region, inflicting significant losses on [enemy] manpower and equipment and entrenching themselves on the achieved lines."

Over the last week, the Russian troops made efforts to conduct local counter attacks against the advancing Ukrainian forces in Orikhiv and Bakhmut directions, but the invaders are unable to regain the territories liberated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This is stated in the intelligence report by the UK Ministry of Defence.
Over the last week, Russian forces have made a concerted effort to conduct local counter attacks against advancing Ukrainian forces in both the Orikhiv and Bakhmut sectors.
“In both areas, Ukrainian forces have defeated the Russian attacks and maintained their hold on recently liberated territory,” reads the report.
As noted, comments posted by the Russian military community suggest extreme disillusionment amongst those involved in these counter attacks, especially near Bakhmut, with reports of ‘ill-conceived’ advances, lack of artillery support, and heavy casualties
However, over the last nine months, the Russian force in Ukraine has proved itself capable of conducting stalwart defensive operations, the UK Ministry of Defence believes.

The attack on Russia’s Morozovsk airfield was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine together with the military and defense forces. At least six aircraft were destroyed.
This was reported to Ukrinform by a source law enforcement agencies.
The airfield was home to Su-34 bomber jets and Su-27 fighter jets, which are the types of aircraft Russia uses to drop chemical warheads on Ukrainian Armed Forces positions and frontline Ukrainian cities.
According to the source, the results of the joint special operation are impressive: at least six Russian military aircraft were destroyed, and eight more were severely damaged. In addition to the equipment, about 20 Russian soldiers were killed or injured, the source added.

"This is an important special operation that will significantly reduce the combat potential of the rashists," the agency's source said.
As reported, Russia has announced a massive drone attack on the Morozovsk military airfield, where bomber jets that strike Ukraine are based. This airfield is located in Russia’s Rostov region.
The drone attack took place on the night of April 4-5. The first explosions occurred around midnight local time. The governor of the Russian region, Vasily Golubev, said that more than 40 combat drones had attacked the military airfield.
