The United States is eager to establish a permanent military base in Somalia

Post by AbyssiniaLady » 17 Mar 2022, 17:21

The United States is eager to establish a permanent military and naval bases in central Somalia to fight al-Shabaab supposedly because al-Shabaab has gained strength, According to U.S. Army General Stephen J. Townsend, America's enemy number one is al-Shabaab, But make no mistake, the United States’s interests in Somalia are mainly driven by fear China could source raw materials from Somalia, not fear of ragtag al-Shabaab, This likely also explains why China has appointed special envoy to the HOA. Al-Shabaab is just a smokescreen, Hopefully, Somalia will refuse a USA military and naval bases on its soil.

U.S. imposes visa restriction on Somali officials

March 18, 2022

The United States Government has announced additional visa restrictions on the officials of the Government of Somalia for delayed parliamentary election.

“Following the government of Somalia’s failure to meet another self-established deadline of March 15 for the completion of its parliamentary electoral process, the United States is expanding the number of Somali individuals subject to visa restrictions,” the U.S. State Department said.

“I am taking this action pursuant to a policy I announced on February 8, under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, to restrict the issuance of visas for those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Somalia,” said Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State.

“While encouraging progress has been made over the past few weeks, there are still more than three dozen unfilled parliamentary seats. There are continued credible reports of procedural irregularities. Journalists and opposition party members working to support democratic institutions and transparent processes have been targeted with harassment, intimidation, arrest, and violence,” he said.

“We will continue to evaluate additional designations under this policy and other tools at our disposal to promote accountability and support the rapid conclusion of Somalia’s electoral process in a credible and transparent manner. The United States strongly supports the Somali people and remains committed to working to advance democracy and mutual prosperity.”

Well done China.

Somalia is a key to that coffer where you can secure your assets for future economic requirements, As it is richly endowed with mineral resources and abundant marine resources that are of interest to China and Western countries and therefore Somalia needs to play its cards delicately and wisely to protect its own interests.

The exaggerated threat of Al-shabaab is merely a way for the United States to solidify its military presence in Somalia, A USA permanent military base in Somalia will unquestionably undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and independence.

Kenya has unsuccessfully repeatedly requested the United States to establish a large permanent military base on its soil, Kenya currently hosts USA and British 200 armed forces near Somalia border with their eyes fixed on Somalia.

Guess what! Washington pays Djibouti $63m annually to lease its current base in Djibouti, which houses conventional and special forces, as well as aerial drones, while it used to pay Somalia $45 million annually 40 years ago to rent just Berbera airport to use it as an emergency landing site for its Space Shuttle - even though no American was ever seen In Berbera, neither had a shuttle ever landed in Berbera!

I think General Stephen Townsend is just saying that to stop Kenya begging for a permanent US military presence on its territory, Kenya is not on the United States’s geopolitical priorities list.

"Why does Somalia warrant such a military commitment from the world’s only superpower?"

"The answer to that question, as is so often the case, starts with geography. Somalia’s northern coast borders the Gulf of Aden, which leads to Bab el-Mandeb, a narrow chokepoint through which all maritime traffic from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean must pass. Avoiding this strait would take all goods from the Persian Gulf – including oil – around the entire African continent to reach European and American markets. It is also a valuable staging ground for navies to project power on to the Arabian Peninsula." Allison Fedirka, the director of analysis for Geopolitical Futures.

Wang Yi Meets with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisaid Muse Ali

2022/03/23

On March 22, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisaid Muse Ali in Islamabad on the sidelines of the session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation upon invitation.

Wang Yi said, Somalia is an important country in the Horn of Africa with a sound endowment for development. Due to geopolitical and other factors, Somalia's national development has been disrupted, and the improvement of people's livelihood has a long way to go. China supports various factions in Somalia in strengthening coordination, focusing on development and revitalization and maintaining political and social stability. China and Somalia are good friends and old friends. We have always supported Somalia in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, never interfered in its internal affairs, never sought geopolitical interests and never participated in the major-power rivalry. We are ready to continue to contribute to Somalia's peace, stability and development.

Abdisaid said, Somalia and China have strong historical relations and China is a reliable friend of Somalia. He thanks China for its long-term support and assistance and looks forward to continued support from China in realizing peace, security and development. He hopes to learn from China's experience in state governance, especially the experience in poverty alleviation.

Wang Yi said that prioritizing development and improving people's livelihood are important elements of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) proposed by President Xi Jinping, and China is ready to deepen exchanges of state governance experience with Somalia within the framework of the GDI. China will push for the implementation of the nine programs of cooperation with Africa in Somalia and is stepping up the implementation of emergency food aid to Somalia. China is ready to continue providing humanitarian material assistance and personnel training, and strengthen practical cooperation in areas such as agriculture, fishery, health and capacity building.

Abdisaid introduced the current situation in the Horn of Africa and the African Union Mission in Somalia. He spoke highly of China's efforts to promote unity and cooperation in the Horn of Africa and agreed to hold the Horn of Africa peace conference. Wang Yi said, China is willing to continue to contribute wisdom and strength to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

China is far from being a saint, if not another evil. However, China is clear about its partnership with Africa. Its economic interaction with Africa is purely on a give-and-take basis and philanthropy or subscription to its communist doctrine are both obsolete and thus have no role whatsoever to play.

China wants everything from Africa: its strategic location, its oil, its rare earth metals, its fish, you name it. And Africa wants a similar list of things from China, including a little pretty Chinese for me.

Despite Beijing being accused of practising debt-trap diplomacy on the continent and seeking to saddle nations with debt to increase its leverage over African countries, it's willing to make its economic interaction with Africa a win-win partnership.

But the major problem lies in the lack of transparency, both on the part of China, as half of the Chinese debt contracted by African countries is so-called hidden debt, which means the exact terms of repayment, the state of repayment, etc are not disclosed, and obviously this has been exposing China to criticism and suspicion, and on the part of African countries, as they do not disclose either the terms of their dealings in general with China - due to corruption and mismanagement.

China's relationship with Africa needs to be revamped to accommodate a transparent China policy that benefits African citizens. The ball lies in the African court, as China needs Africa much more than Africa needs China.

One African country that has really benefited from its economic interaction with China is Rwanda - and I've seen it with my own eyes!

Somalia hails China's support for hospital revamping

Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2022-04-20

MOGADISHU, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Somalia's health officials on Tuesday hailed the Chinese Embassy for supporting the revamping of the entire operation theater of Banadir Hospital, located in the capital of Mogadishu.

Fartum Sharif Mohamed, director of the hospital said during the completion ceremony that three major surgery rooms, four manual operation beds, operating lamps and other equipment had also been installed during the upgrade that took four months to complete.

"Chinese built this hospital earlier and they are redoubling their efforts to modernize and support the hospital, we thank the Chinese for the continued support," Mohamed said.

According to Mohamed, with the resumption of operation capabilities in February, the hospital now has the capacity to receive 200 pregnant mothers a month. This has offered a silver lining to the cloud of deteriorating drought and COVID-19 pandemic for women and children in Somalia.

Fawziya Abikar Nur, Minister of Health and Human Services of Somalia noted that the upgraded hospital's theater will help save lives, adding that it was a reaffirmation of flourishing China-Somalia bilateral relations.

Banadir Hospital was built by China in the 1970s and was expanded in the mid-1980s. It is a living and telling example of the spirit of China-Africa friendship and cooperation.

Fei Shengchao, the Chinese ambassador to Somalia, said Beijing supported the construction of Banadir hospital in the 1970s and it has continuously supported its development.

He disclosed that in a month's time, the Training Course for Health Practitioners from Somalia will be held between the National Health Commission of China and the Ministry of Health and Human Service of Somalia, noting that doctors and nurses from top hospitals in China will share their expertise and experience on mothers and children's health with their colleagues from Banadir hospital and other health facilities in Mogadishu.

"I believe that better facility and stronger expertise will help Somali medical professionals meet the health challenges for mothers and children in the months and years ahead," continued the ambassador.

The hospital, which is part of China implemented projects in Somalia such as the National Theatre, the Mogadishu Stadium and Sport Village, is one of the biggest public hospitals in the country.
