A STORY OF REGENERATION AND REFORESTATION FROM ERITREA

DIA recently gave interview. Among many mumbles he pointed out the failure of Eritrea from capitalizing the marine resources. The primary responsibility rests on him and he admitted colossal failure by his own administration. Unfortunately, there is no one to take him to court.

I wish a few knowledgeable individuals can go back and trace DIA decision that resulted with such industry collapse. For now, let's get started with one fully documented promising project that was destroyed by DIA.

Seawater Farms Eritrea
You probably heard about this project - Seawater Farms Eritrea. Ministry of Fisheries under the leadership of Petros Solomon did all this work. After his arrest Isayas shuts down the project in 2003 by filling the 60 or so shrimp tanks with dirt, rocks or cement.

More info below.

Summary report:
"During 1998 – 2003, a remarkable project took place in the tiny desert country of Eritrea that showcased a systems thinking approach to the development of seawater-based agriculture in an arid coastal zone leading to big profits, a revitalised environment and the creation of many jobs. Can this project be replicated to breathe life into some of the other 25,000 miles of poor coastal desert around the world?

While this innovation story deserves a happy ending, unfortunately political upheavals in Eritrea resulted in most of Carl Hodge’s Seawater farm project being closed down in 2003."
