Ethiopian Community in UK Calls for ICC Prosecution Following Massacre

Post by eden » 05 Dec 2021, 19:17

We, members of the Oromo community in the UK have felt compelled to start this petition because of the rampant atrocities and human rights violations perpetrated by the government of Ethiopia against innocent civilians including our very own sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, and relatives in Oromia. Even though we, as citizens and permanent residents of the United Kingdom, do live in Britain enjoying democratic freedoms and discharging our civic responsibilities we are all affected by the genocidal atrocities Ethiopia has continued to perpetrate against the Oromo and deteriorating human rights situations faced by our nations in Ethiopia.

The Oromo, the largest indigenous nation of Africa has been under relentless attack by the Ethiopian security forces including the Army for several decades. This week more than dozens of the Karrayyuu Oromo elders and civilian community leaders were mass massacred by the Ethiopian armed forces in Fantalle district of Oromia on 1 December 2021. [1] It is our understanding that the Karrayyuu tribe of Oromo were asked to join the Ethiopian Armed Force in the war against Tigray Defence Forces but the Karayyu declined Ethiopian government’s demands in favour of peaceful resolution of the war. But the government of Ethiopia took offense and avenged by mass killing innocent civilian in broad day light. The victims, according to the BBC[2], were mainly leaders and officers of the Oromo Gada system who were holding sacred ceremony which is an integral element of preserving the Oromo traditional democratic system that the UNESCO in December 2016.[3] The Karayyu massacre is only the tip of the iceberg of the genocidal atrocities Ethiopia has been perpetrating against millions of Oromo in Oromia and is reflective of the fact that Ethiopia is posing existential risks to the Oromo and the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The Karrayyuu massacre was conducted against the background of Ethiopia’s plan to eliminate the Oromo Liberation Front. Mr. Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia declared his intention to eliminate the OLF at a joint press conference held the Ms Uhuru Kenyatta in Kenya on 9 December 2020.[1] Few weeks later, spokesman of the Oromia branch of the ruling party explained reiterated in a televised parliamentary speech that the OLF is hiding amongst the Oromo civilians and the only way to wipe out the OLF is by punishing the nation. He stated " we had to dry up the sea in order to finish the fish”[2], clearly suggesting that the Oromo people should be to punished to force the OLF to surrender.

On 5 July 2020 the BBC English News reported that more than 166 people have been killed following the public protest against the political assassination of Artist Hachalu Hundessa, a young Oromo singer loved by the nation for his patriotic songs in the evening of 29 June 2020.[1] Currently, more than 20,000 Oromo political prisoners are languishing torture chambers in Oromia.

Is this Ethiopian community? Why is only based on OLF messengers? Where are other victims? Nothing wrong to condemn massacre. But this is too fishy. These OLF are trying to steal the spotlight of the recent ethnic cleansing of thousands of Amhara in Wollega and help to cover up Abiy Ahmed. That is the problem, mourning of death is even ethnic based in today’s Ethiopia. Where have they been, the algeed massacre of so-called “Aba gada” is an old news.
Also, where is the evidence when one arbitrarily write this "The Oromo, the largest indigenous nation of Africa." This 100% fake or fiction so as by repeating lies others will believe so. No, Oromo is neither a majority nor a minority in Ethiopia population wise. If one wants to know the largest ethnic group in Africa, he/she has to go to Nigeria and there are couple of tribes that have the biggest number in Africa. Abiy Ahmed was making such a stupid statement recently to deceive Ethiopians so that the falsely believe Oromo are majority while they ARE NOT.

Eden, could you please post verified and more likely true posts.

Thanks for sharing! It begs for an investigation. Regardless of ethnic, faith or political affiliations, the sacred lives of citizen should not be taken by any group or individual. However, my question is why is it only about these victims? Why not before? Why this incidence alone, why not with the freshest and with the largest clear mass genocide of the Wolega unarmed civilian. From the post of Addis Standard, those in the picture (who are reported to be victims) themselves were armed, we see some carried guns. But the Wellega case is pure genocide, unborn/ fetus, newborn babies, children, women , elderly killed in thousands – and their only crime being born Amhara. Hypocrisy is costing innocents life in Ethiopia. I hate hypocrisy other than thar all people are born equal, all lives matter and are equal. As a country and people what should we all have to do? Don't we have to do away with ethnic politics and ethnic ክልል? The math simple, it is costing the country everything. When ክልል goes through the door, peace and harmony entrer via the window. Otherwise, conviction of criminal is one thing elminating hotbed of the crime is another

The Karrayu there are traditionally armed to protect themselves and their animals. However, if you want to know what happened, all you have to do is read the report. Those armed oromo men were cooperative and not fighting the local government, because they did not think their own government would massacre them, and they were not doing anything wrong, and as the report says, there were no armed conflicts in that area- no OLA/No TDF/no nothing. The local government, or OPDO, blamed OLA, then later on they got exposed, which shows they have a tradition of blaming OLA for the crimes that the OPDO commits- which is why OLA is confident to have independent investigations in Wallaga while OPDO refuses because it'd expose them!

Abere,

Remember, these victims and perpetrators are one ethnicity so how is ክልል to blame for this massacre? Please educate me.

BTW, the post is six months old. I posted it when it was fresh. I posted several but I don't remember if you condemned it at the time or may be you overlooked it?

Sadacca - thank you for caring and taking the time to clarify to the readers who want to know

eden,

These are victims of ክልል which created dictatorial tribal thugs either way one tribalist blaming the other separatist tribalist.

Abere blaming Oromo victims who were doing nothing, which shows the deep-seated hatred he has for Oromo's. Oh well, I prefer a honest enemy over a fake friend any day of the week. Thank you Abere, for showing your true hatred for us Oormo's.
