Five Possible Destinies of Ethiopia Based on the Spectrum of Oromo Politics!

One thing must be clear, no more come back of Amhara Naftagnas and Tegaru Hegemonists will be allowed to Finfinne palace. Both must be checked continously and for that purpose, all Oromo forces in the political spectrum must cooperate and act in unison. It is good that the OLF is now acting in all the three routs: as rebel OLA, as opposition OFC and as ruling OPP. Especially, infiltrating the ruling OPP and doing the job of bilisummaa is more pragmatic than acting as rebel or opposition. Based on the spectrum of Oromo politics, the future result can be:

– an independent Gadaa Oromia as originally planned by the OLF of Ob. Galaasaa.

– con-federated Oromia as now persued by OLA of Jal. Marroo.

– ethno-federated Oromia as envisioned by OFC of Dr. Marara.

– geo-federated Oromia as wished by certain Oromo elites like Dr. Nagassoo as he joined Andinet party.

– an integrative Great Oromia (transformation of Ethiopia to Oromia by promoting Afaan Oromo to primary working language of the country) as originally aimed by Dr. Haile Fida.

Otherwise, simply put, Ethiopia has now five options as persued by five types of political forces currently active in the country:

– Amharigna dominated geographical federation (ADGF) as aimed by Ezema of Dr Berihanu.

– Amharigna dominated multinational federation (ADMF) as envisioned by EPP of Dr. Abiy.

– independent republic of nation states (IRNS) as planed by OLF of Ob. Galassa.

– Oromiffaa led multinational federation (OLMF) as envisioned by OFC of Dr. Marara.

– Oromiffaa led geographical federation  (OLGF) as promoted by Dr. Haile Fida of Meison and now entertained by Fayyis Oromia.

Wishful destructive dream. He cares only TPLF and OLF, at the expense of the other 70% of Ethiopians. I don't know where this foolish thug going to sell this idea, may be in hell.

Which of the five destinies shall prevail? Time will show us. Fact on the ground is that the first two goals are pushed by pro-Amharanet forces, whereas the last two are persued by pro-Oromummaa forces. These two camps are antagonistic to each other. The middle compromise solutuion for pro-Amharanet bloc and pro-Oromummaa camp seems to be the third option accepted by the OLF, TPLF, ONLF and other liberation fronts. When I see the vehement hatered the pro- Amharanet forces have against the legitimately and naturally Oromummaa led Ethiopia, it looks that OLF’s vision is enevitable.

Otherwise, we once heard and read President Barak Obama endorsing the fascist regime in Finfinne as “democratically elected government”. Ethiopians in general and the Oromo in particular have endured all sorts of external influences in the Horn of Africa. The Oromo are known for defending their position against influences from the Middle East and the West since many thousand years ago. They successfully defended themselves and defeated the efforts of both, the Portuguese and the Ottoman Turks, in the sixteenth century, the history which was mis-interprated and mis-represented as the “expansion, migration or invasion.” They were main leaders and partakers in defeating the Italian colonialists at Adwa; main freedom fighters during the second Italian invasion in the Second World War; part of main leaders of the attempted coups during the rules of emperor Haile-Silassie and dictator Mengistu Haile-Mariam; main leaders of the Ethiopian revolution in 1974; main opposition group against TPLF’s ruling fascists and racists since 1991; and even they were main movers of the known 2005 public uprising and mass protests against the TPLF before and after the election.

This is just the highlight to reflect on resistance movement of the Oromo against the system of colonization/domination. We may ask, despite these efforts, why was the Oromo unsuccessful for long time? Oromo liberation movement was like swimming against the worst tide of Abyssinian oppressive elites being fully supported by the world power players. The Raayyaa Oromo movement of 1920′s, the Bale Oromo uprising in 1960′s for about seven years, the Oromo movement in Me’ison and Ici’at during the Derg era, and move of the OLF fighters in 1992 (which was sabotaged by Westerners in the camping and imprisoning OLA/Oromo Liberation Army) and in 2006 (the invasion of Somalia just to attack the armed movement of OLA) were all suppressed by massive help of the Western regimes, which just wanted to keep the system of domination intact, in order to instrumentalize the regime as a servant of their own interests in the Horn.

Despite all these setbacks, the Oromo people continued to sing the song ‘give me liberty or give me death;’ no world power could suppress this nation forever and think its interest in the region is served for the long-run. Not only the Oromo, but also every nation and nationality in the country has started to sing the same song and raised against the puppet of the world power players – the fascist regime of TPLF, who used taxpayers’ money of the Western nations to suppress Oromo liberation movement and movement of other freedom fighters.

Unfortunate for the regime and its Western handlers, interestingly, a revolution in Tunisia was a good example for the mistake the Western regimes always commit by investing in dictators. We hopefully expected that this revolution comes to Ethiopia; and the Oromo can have again the leading position by singing their song of ‘give me liberty or give me death.’ Lately, the Western regimes reconsidered their position against this legitimate cry of our people for freedom, they could be on side of the Oromo and other oppressed peoples, and supported the inclusive revolution against tyranny. This was also time for all opposition and rebel organizations to narrow their differences and fought together for freedom from fascism and racism in the empire.

We were almost in a similar dilemma as the one the international community had faced as it was confronted by the Nazi Germany during the World War II. Despite their ideological differences, the Soviets and the Western had to forge an alliance against the evil regime. Similarly, no question that political organizations and liberation fronts with different/opposite ideologies needed to cooperate against the evil regime in Ethiopia, which was tormenting all citizens and nations in the country. The necessary priority was given to ‘the Fight for Freedom from Fascism.’ They had to get common vision and they needef to find middle point of compromise to come together and fought against the fascists.

Just for those who were interested to know more about the slogan written in the title of this short opinion, Wikipedia describes it as follows: ““Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!” is a famous quotation attributed to Patrick Henry from a speech he made to the Virginia Convention. Among the delegates to the convention were future US President Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Reportedly, those in attendance, upon hearing the speech, shouted, “give me liberty or give me death!” Since then, this slogan has been used by all who want their civil and/or national freedom; especially, it had been used in Africa during the war against colonialism.

All Ethiopians in general, and the Oromo in particular, also used to have this same assertion directly or indirectly in their struggle against the oppressive monarchs, dictators and fascists, who ruled the empire. The slogan was needed more than anything for the TPLF regime was the worst of the rulers, which the country has ever had. This was common banner, which all Oromo liberation movements as well as other liberation groups and all Ethiopian opposition groups could have in common; so it was right time for all of us to say: give me liberty or give me death = netsanet weyim mot = bilisummaa ykn du’a!.

Not only citizens and nations in Ethiopia needed freedom from tyranny, but all African nations need their second phase of liberation movement. All Africans, except the Oromo and others under Abyssinian colonization, had their first successful liberation struggle against the European colonizers. Tunisian revolution was beginning of the second phase of liberation from rule of the brutal African dictators and fascists. The fire of revolution has already started in this north African country; and it should have engulfed other parts of Africa, including Ethiopia. Were the peoples in Ethiopia ready? Were democratic forces and liberation fronts ready for the eventualities? Were our dictators ready to fly away or will they opt to further massacre the protesting mass? Here were the possible scenarios:

– the already repeatedly traumatized citizens might be under the fear we used to have and kept quiet, so there could never be a revolution; also the legal opposition at home seemed to be pacified for certain reasons, and the rebel organizations mistrusted each other and might not be able to lead any coordinated public uprising.

– the spontaneous inclusive revolution could start and succeed like Tunisia’s revolution.

– the revolution could happen spontaneously and the brutal fascist regime might have its massacre orgy, so that it might successfully suppress the revolution.

– the revolution could be led by the sleeping legal opposition leaders and might end by their imprisonment as it happened in 2005.

– the revolution could be led by the legal opposition and be successful.

– the revolution could be coordinated and led by the underground movements (by the rebels operating illegally at home) and could be successful.

– the revolution could be led by these underground movements, but be unsuccessful.

Despite such uncertainties, sure was that, be it within short time or in the long-run, the fascist and racist regime leave power being compelled by civil disobedience, armed struggle and/or public uprising. No election politics or any sort of peaceful way of struggle, devoid of “illegal” actions, would make regime change. That was why talking about democracy and democratization process was self-deception, to say the least. The only way forward was to fight for freedom, thus the right rhetoric was ‘give me liberty or give me death,’ not the usual talk, “let’s democratize Ethiopia by negotiating with TPLF.”

We all were freedom fighters, be it we were active in democratic organizations or in liberation movements. Thus, it was time to turn our coordinated struggles against the fascist regime which was ruling and surviving by dividing and polarizing the opposition camp. We had to be different from TPLF cadres, who camouflage as one opposition or rebel group and shoot their verbal bullets to the other opposition or rebel movement. This was the main character which differs them from genuine and smart opposition groups, which tried to always direct their machine guns towards the fascists.

TPLF scholars (cadres) were busy to write articles supporting an unconditional unitary Ethiopiaia just to curse national liberation movements; and vice versa, there were a lot of them advocating the unconditional independence of nations and nationalities just to criminalize the pro-unity democratic movements. Their whole effort was to hinder the oppositions and the rebels from finding a common compromising denominator so that they can not cooperate or coordinate their forces against the racist TPLF regime. No genuine and smart opposition/rebel group with sound mind (except some fools) wasted its talent and time on fighting the other opposition/rebel, instead of targeting our common tormenting enemy.

Therefore, it was right time for the opposition/rebel groups to come together and plan together to lead the imminent inclusive revolution in the country. Take it how long it might, the regime could fall; and we were confronted with the political problems. That was why I liked to call upon Oromo nationalists in particular, and all democratic Ethiopians in general, to wake up from our sleep and lead the revolution. As I have tried to show in this short opinion, again Oromo people were encouraged to stir and to lead the freedom movement. We all needed to sing the song ‘give me liberty or give me death’ louder than we did before. There was no ideological or any other difference among Oromo nationalists which hindered us from working together and from cooperating with others for the sake of our common fredom from fascism. Despite President Obama’s rhetoric, the regime in Finfinne was not democratically elected, but ruled with brute force; we should  have standed up together and took our liberty by any means necessary. The intensified armed movements led by the OLF and AG7 were encouraged and empowered further. At last, the Oromo led revolution was successful and we got our liberty from the TPLF fascist and racist rule, even though Abiy Ahmed betrayed the Oromo and now Biltsiginna is oppressing this noble nation further.
