Hin qabnus, hin aaddannus

This is an Afan Oromo saying referring to a bald (human) heads, saying "we don't have it and we don't bother ourselves of shaving it", roughly translated.

They developed and distributed COVID-19 vaccine among themselves and left the poorer nations of the world out of the distribution mechanism, in most parts at least.

While the vaccination rate among the so called developped nations is at around 70 % or above, it still hovers at around 3% in the poor nations of the world, including my own country Ethiopia.

They were the first to rush to vaccine-nationalism and they were the first now also rushing to additional measures aimed at containing the yet new variant of the virus, dubbed Omicron. This is in response to the assumption that the new variant of the virus could be resistant to the already administered vaccinations and also presumed to be more contagious than all the previously known variants, including the Delta-Variant, known to be more contagious than all the rest so far.

The rush to vaccine-nationalism was mainly to open up their economy and get comparative advantage over the rest of the world, which would still be under lockdown measures.

But countries like Ethiopia didn't opt to even contemplate about locking down its economic activities and the rate of the infection through the virus has been so far mild, if the reported figures are anything to go with, in comparison to what has been seen somewhere else around the world.

On the other hand Israel was the first country to have vaccinated the major part of its citizens and claimed the first comer status of the post corona-time, reopening its economy, but I just heard on the news also that it became the first country to close its borders to any other country of the world ONE MORE TIME due to Omicron. If highest vaccination rate will not spare you from re-lockdown of your economy, then why would it matter to have it at all, in the first place? This question begs an answer, in my view.

Many other western countries have also already closed their borders to any arrivals from a number of countries in the southern African region.

Do we need to also close our borders now?

If the above saying is based on any sort of societal wisdom, then there is no gain by closing the borders and yet hurting our economy, for us both ways are the same and lead only to more damage.

We don't have it and we don't bother ourselves of shaving it.

One of the world’s last three countries to administer COVID-19 vaccines has started giving out doses as the East African nation of Burundi launched its national campaign.
