Recently, Agames have discovered that they had walked from Tigray all over the Middle East, creating civilizations in Persia, Babylon and Egypt. The Tigris river is in fact named after the ancient Agames who discovered it 5000 years before the birth of Christ. They were great walkers and so words like እግሪ emanated from Tigray. In fact, they were (and still are) so fierce fighters that the king of the jungle is named after them by the English as tiger and Spanish as tigre.

But like all great civilizations, theirs deteriorated and for that last 1000 years, Tigray has been the land of misery. That is why words like ችግር and ችጋራም have sprung to mar their marvellous history!

According to historian Richard Pankhurst the story of the origin of the word Tigre and the people is completely different from what you described above. According to him these group of people were brought to Ethiopia from Yemen for masonry labor and as service men and women in the palace. During the ancient time it was customary for the subjects to bow down during banquets and upon greeting the royal noble men and noble women. Thus lowering heads and bowing later associated with kissing the feet (እግር). So, that practice is called in Amharic ተእግር or ተግሬ which later evolved in the people dialect ትግሬ. Richard Pankhurst also likened the Tigre women placing artisan craft like a plate over the head while dancing it the ancient practice of entertaining the royal dinner party and the tradition of serving food. For the time being, I am not able to find the video documentary from him. But the documentary clearly establish the linkage between the import of Tigres from Yemen and their masonry skills, royal entertainer and chef. And the name Tigre associated with the practice of bowing down and kissing feet's of royal noble people.
