The Main Conflict in Ethiopia: Amharianists vs Oromianists!

The Main Conflict in Ethiopia: Amharianists vs Oromianists!

The main conflict in Ethiopia (Great Oromia) has always been between two clubs of elites: Amharianists camouflaged as Ethiopianist and Oromianists rejecting Ethiopiawinet in a sense of Amharanet. Amharianist elites are those, who rever Amharanet/Amharigna, and Oromianist elites are those, which respect Oromumma/Oromiffa. Amharianist elites usully hide behind Ethiopiawinet to cover their attempt of promoting Amharanet and assimilating other nations into their identity. Elites from all nations, who are fighting for true freedom and democracy are by defsault Oromianists because of the fact that Oromumma/Oromiffa shall take its natural leadership position through fair election. Now, we observe further classification of the two clubs in to two sub-groups. In Amharianist club, we do see Great Amharianists like those elites in EZEMA, which are camouflaged as Ethiopianists, but vehmently struggle for maintenance of Amharanet/Amharigna domination and forming Ethiopia, which is practically Amharia. The second group in this club are Republican Amharianists like the NAMA, which explicitely struggle for self right of their nation to forge republic of Amharia and of course if possible to maintain domination of Amharanet/Amharigna. At the same time, we can observe two groups of Oromianists: Republican Oromianists, which are as genuine as NAMA to struggle for self determimaton of their own nation to foster republic of Oromia, and Great Oromianists, who can see the potential of transforming Ethiopia to Oromia, if the rule of the game in that country will be freedom and democracy. At the moment, it looks like both Republican Amharianists and Great Amharismists are allied with Biltsigina of Abiy Ahmed against both Republican Oromianists like the OLF and Great Oromianists like the OFC. That is why Abiy Ahmed included both EZEMA and NAMA leaders in his cabinet and kept Afaan Oromo subordinate to Amharigna. Still Amhariamists are in control of the palace, regime and the parlament. They are dedicated to maintain the ongoing domination of Amharigna as primary language of Ethiopia, even though Oromiffa as language of the majority has the legitimacy to be primary working language of Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed is simply their trjan horse just as Mengistu H/Mariam and Meles Zenawi were! Both Mengistu and Meles were against Oromianists and they prefered to be keepers of the hitherto domination of Amharanet/Amharigna.

Ethiopia is multinational country with two big nations consisting about 65% (Amhara 25% and Oromo 40%) of the whole population. In the hitherto dictatorial Ethiopia, Amharanet and Amharigna are dominating. To maintain this dominance, a system of dictatorship, aka naftagna system of domination, must continue. That is what the neo-naftagnas being led by Abiy Ahmed are doing. Any movement towards democracy is tantamount to accepting a leadership by Oromiffaa and Oromummaa because of the demographic advantage the Oromo have. So, any conflict between dictatorship and democracy is equivalent to conflict: Amharanet camouflaged as Ethiopiawinet vs Oromummaa as main component of Ethiopiawinet. All nostalgic dictatorial forces trying to bring back the Derg style “geo-federal” Ethiopia dominated by Amharigna (e.g Ezema) and those striving to keep the status quo of Woyane type dictatorial “ethno-federal” Ethiopia also dominated by Amharigna (e.g EPP) are promoters of Amharanet. All other forces genuinely struggling for freedom and democracy are supporters of Oromummaa led Ethiopia. Thus, in short, the current struggle is between the naftagnas keeping the existing dominance of Amharanet and nationals of different ethnies favouring the possible leadership of Oromummaa. Both Amharanet and Oromumma can wear mask of Ethiopianism as a trade mark. Till now, Ethiopianism is equivalent to Amharanet and in the future democratic country, Ethiopianism can be the same to Oromumma.

Elements of Ethiopianism in two sense are: 1. Ethiopiansim = Abyssinianism = Habeshanism = Amharianism: claiming “Semetic” identity, non-African, colonial, rascist, oppressive, dictatorial, anti-selfdetermination, anti-Cushitism, anti-ethnic identity, exploitation, autoritative, state terrorism, genocidal… etc ; in General, the concept is out of Africa! 2. Ethiopianism = Oromianism = Cushitism: based on Biblical Cush, purely Afrocentric, pro-freedom of blacks, liberty of oppressed nations, popular democracy, mutual solidarity, humanistic, rule of law, social justice, good governance, development, egalitarian… etc; generally, the concept is in Africa!

When we talk about any conflict, be it personal or political, we actually should try to concentrate on its way of resolution rather than only being absorbed by its problem part. The problem part is usually described in multiple forms; another term used to replace the word conflict can be a term called controversy even though the two words do have a bit difference in meaning. Controversy is a state of a prolonged public dispute or debate, usually concerning a matter of opinion, whereas a conflict is more of a quarrel of individuals or groups based on their different interests contradicting each other. A conflict resolution is often pursued in a wide-range of methods in addressing the possible sources of conflict – whether at the inter-personal level or between states – and in finding a means of resolving a given conflict or in continuing it through less destructive forms. The processes of conflict resolution do generally include negotiation, mediation, diplomacy and creative peace-building. We may then ask: can the conflict in the Abyssinian empire be solved in such approaches? What is actually the main co

It is clear that the main conflict in Ethiopia is political, not only personal (not only that of leaders); and, of course, it is not biological at all. I am convinced that the conflict between Abyssinia and Oromia is not based on the “real” or perceived difference of our biological origins, but it is a result of conflict between two main political ideologies – Habeshism = Amharianism (masked with Ethiopianism) and Oromianism/Cushitism (i.e Ethiopipanism in a true sense). It is not like political controversies, which can occur in mono-national state, such as class struggle in many Western countries, but it is a conflict between different national groups within multinational state. Just to clarify the nature of the conflict in Ethiopia, I would like to concentrate on the conflict between Abyssinian ruling elites and the Oromo nation; of course, this doesn’t mean that other oppressed nations in the region are not part of the conflict.

Abyssinian elites, being led by their ideology – Habeshism = Amharianism -, used to act, and they are still acting, against Oromo people and Cushitism since their emergence in northeastern part of Africa. This Habeshism is characterized by despotism, authoritarianism, terrorization of the indigenous nations, oppression, tyranny, etc. It is software of alien colonizers, which is implanted in hardware of the Habeshanized elites, so that these elites could subjugate their own kinds and kins. Result of the hitherto Abyssinian leaders being influenced by such suppressive Habeshism is the present status of Ethiopia, which made the country to be known as land of hunger, misery and poverty. Not surprisingly, this destructive Habeshism is decorated and packed in a relatively good ideological name of the biblical Ethiopianism, i.e. in Cushitism/Oromianism. That is a reason which compels the Oromo people and other oppressed nations to identify and separate an evil Abyssinianism from the holy Ethiopianism in a sense of Cushiticism described in the Bible. We don’t have to throw out the baby with bathwater. In the holy book, Ethiopianism = Cushiticism is associated with righteousness, whereas Habeshism is the opposite of Cushitism.

Unfortunately, the glorious biblical Cush has been denigrated, smeared and disgraced by the Abyssinian system of domination since thousands of years. It is only because of these dictatorial domination that this region is now at bottom in list of countries or regions regarding both democracy and development. Despite this hitherto lowest position, hopefully, through liberation struggle of the Oromo and that of other Cushitic nations, Cush’s original strength and glory will slowly come back, be it in from of mono-state named Cushland or as multiple states (including an Oromo state) living in a good neighborhood to each other in the region called Cush. It is up to the respective public to decide which one of the two forms of living together will prevail. In both cases, Oromo people will have our freedom from Habeshism/Amharianism in order to live and further strengthen Oromianism or Cushitism/Ethiopianism in its true biblical sense. We can achieve this on doomsday of Abyssinian rulers. We will definitely not further allow them to hide themselves behind the names like Woyane (name of Raayyaa Oromo freedom fighters) and Ethiopia (Cush).

Actually, Cushitism is either the same to Oromianism (if we consider Cush as Oromo, and Oromo as Cush) or it consists of Oromianism (if we believe that Oromo nation is only a part of Cush, but not the whole Cush). Be it in one of these two definitions of the Oromo, fact is that both Oromianism and Cushitism are anti-thesis of Habeshism. This way or that way, Oromianism is core of Cushitism in its true sense. Abyssinian elites smartly tried to isolate Oromianism and destroy it, as well they just usurped the name Ethiopia (Cush) to cover their evil Habeshism. They tried to attack Oromianism, especially by suppressing its three main elements: Afaan Oromoo (language), Aadaa Oromoo (culture) and Amanti Oromoo/Waaqeffannaa (religion). These Habeshanized elites (whom we call Abyssinians) are now hated by the Oromo and other oppressed nations, not necessarily because of their blood, but surely due to their politics. Their politics is that of colonizers or they are slaves of alien colonialists, being instrumentalized in subjugating the true Cush people (Biblical Oromians/Cushites); of course, true Cush (Ethiopia) being totally different from the fake/Abyssinian/pseudo Ethiopia, which is now under influence of Habeshism.

That is only between your two ears planted in there while you were sleeping snoring and daydreaming. After that you will never go back to get yourself fixed and tormented day and night and spoil your life on anything MENELIK whatsoever. The conflict between Amharianism/Habeshism and Oromianism/Cushitism is still going on. Abyssinian elites are still targeting the above mentioned three main elements of Oromianism (Afaan, Aadaa and Amanti). Fortunately Oromianism, being characterized by principles of freedom, Gadaa and sovereignty, is slowly, but surely, moving forwards, and it is killing Habeshism gradually. The pro-democracy and pro-freedom movement of all nations in Ethiopia are practically allies of Oromianism in fighting against Habeshism. That is why, the OLF in particular, and Oromo people in general, should be inclusive of these forces against hegemony, dictatorship and tyranny – characteristics of Habeshism. I know that, nowadays, even Abyssinian elites do preach and teach about democracy and freedom, but expectedly almost all of them fail to accept and respect right of nations to self-determination, which is indeed alpha and omega of democracy.

These “pro-democracy,” but anti-self-determination politicians, are “smart” Abyssinian elites, who try to hide their Habeshism behind buzz words like human rights, individual freedom, democracy and justice, but deny the God-given right of all big and small nations to self-determination, including independence. Such position on rights of nations to self-determination is in fact the litmus paper to detect these elites, who are led by Habeshism and are active in any sort of political organization, wherever they hide themselves. Oromianism is an ideology which believes unswervingly in rights of citizens and nations to self-determination, including independence and/or integration. It fights against all political minds, who want to dictate their causes, instead of trying to win minds and hearts of the public for their respective camps. Even in Oromo liberation bloc, we do observe such dictatorial minds, who want to achieve unconditional independence or unconditional integration, instead of leaving the decision for Oromo public. The minds of these dictatorial Oromo are surely contaminated with virus of Habeshism

When we look at conflict areas in Oromo liberation camp, it is absurd that we, Oromo nationalists, quarrel on the two options: federation vs. separation. Actually, these terms are used by and only appropriate for minority nations at the geographical periphery like Tigrai. That is why TPLF elites loved to preach federation as long as they are in power, and now want to promote separation of Tigrai, becaus they lost power in Finfinne palace. The appropriate concepts for the nation of the majority at the center or all over the country, like the Oromo, are independence and integration. That means Oromo people can benefit if we fight now together for our freedom from EPP tyrants unconditionally, and then choose between an ‘independent Gadaa Oromia’ and an ‘integrated Great Oromia, i.e democratic Ethiopia,’ based on Oromo public verdict, of course, after having an extensive and intensive debate and discussion on benefit and cost of the two types of sovereignty, which Oromia will have (based on benefit and cost of independence or integration).

Specially, knowing the fact that the job of integrating the revived Ethiopia with its genuine Cushitism being future potential of Oromo nation, the present “keeper” of Habeshism, EPP, tries to discredit Oromo liberation forces by accusing them as “anti-Ethiopia and separatists.” This is simply crocodile tear of the tyrants; fact on the ground being that true Ethiopianism and Oromianism are inseparable. The Oromo struggle rather can be seen as a means to revive Cushiticism on grave of Habeshism, the evil ideology, which is now hidden behind package of good “Ethiopianism”. Abyssinian elites do know the acceptance and fame of the name Ethiopia/Cush among international community, and they use this name simply as a trademark in order to sell their hated Abyssinian identity. It is up to Oromo nationalists and the nationals of the other Cushitic nations to expose this mischief, to isolate the historical Cushiticism from the ongoing Habeshism, and to associate Ethiopianism back to its original good elements like Oromianism.

That means, Ethiopianism must be made free from all characters of Habeshism and be refilled with the ancient good and glorious elements of Cush. One of these elements is the original monotheistic religion of the Cushites (Waaqeffannaa). Just as Judaism is core identity of Israel, so is Waaqeffannaa that of Cushland. But, this doesn’t mean that the other religions like Christianity and Islam do have no place in Cush. Here also, the same as Jerusalem is holy city of both major religions, so is Finfinnee right home of Christianity and Islam. Oromians need to accommodate true Cushitic identity, instead of distancing ourselves from it, just because of the fact that the name Ethiopia is already contaminated by the repressive Habeshism. We need to be confident enough to clean the name Ethiopia from this dirty ideology, and decorate it with beautiful Oromianism, being conscious that Habeshism is symbol of tyranny, whereas Oromianism is paragon of liberty.

To make the difference between Abyssinian dominated Ethiopia and Oromian led Ethiopia clear, let’s imagine two bottles of apple juice; one is filled with the true apple juice and the other with urine having the same color to apple juice. On both bottles, it is written the name apple, and we are given the chance to buy the juice. Surely, we can not identify the two externally for they do have similar color and the same name. To differentiate the two, we have to taste. Then, we know that the contents are totally different; one is nutritive and useful, whereas the other is poisonous and destructive. The same is true about the name ‘Ethiopia’. What matters is the content, not the bottle (name). Ethiopia with Habeshism as a content is like the bottle filled with urine, i.e. despotic and destructive, whereas Ethiopia with its true ingredients like Oromianism is democratic and constructive. That is why, what we need in the region called Ethiopia/Cush is to get rid of Habeshism and to promote Cushitism.

I know that this approach may sound Ethiopian-friendly and, surely, certain Oromo nationalists can accuse me of “being an Ethiopianist.” But, fact is that I personally do have no problem in liberating the Oromia, the size of this Biyya-Oromoo being either as small as that of OPP, about 284,000 SqKm, or as big as shown here: http://www.gadaa.com/thepeople.html), about 800,000 SqKm. The reality on the ground is that, it is not less beneficial for Oromo people in particular, and for all nations of the region in general, if we can re-build Oromian Ethiopia on the grave of the hitherto Abyssinian Ethiopia. Oromo people, as the majority over all the country, can be confident enough to have this second type of sovereignty as another option or as an alternative. That is why the job of choosing between an ‘independent Gadaa Oromia’ and an ‘integrative Great Oromia’ must be left to Oromo public.

To bring Oromo people to this level of decision making, all Oromo nationalists in the walk of life should learn to work together, instead of fighting against each other on minor issues. It is really disgusting, when we read from any Oromo nationalist supporting one faction of Oromo liberation movement and turning her/his pen or verbal gun against another faction. As far as I am concerned such pal-talkers and pal-writers are simply cowards and fools who do shy fighting against our current tormentor (EPP), but try to “roar like a lion” against another Oromo group, which may have different approach to achieve our freedom. They are simply the dalga-fiigdota (horizontal runners) as described in Oromo proverb: ‘kan gaara bahuu dadhabe, dalga fiiga’ (who couldn’t walk vertical up mountain, runs horizontal). I hope these dalga-fiigdota will stop the senseless wasting of their precious talents, money and time in fighting against their fellow Oromo, and I encourage them to start exercising the process of conflict resolution like negotiation, mediation, diplomacy and creative peace-building. To this effect, the conflict among the Oromo liberation forces is not irreconcilable as our foes try to suggest and want to make us believe.

But, it is clear that the conflict between Habeshism and Cushitism is irreconcilable, which should end with a victory for Cushitism. To assure this victory, there is no other way bypassing unity of Oromo nationalists for our freedom. My wish here is as always to see all of us, Oromo nationals, fighting together against the oppressive Abyssinian elites’ system of domination and against their Amharianism/Habeshism ideology in order to foster our freedom and sovereignty, be it the future independent Gadaa Oromia in from of Gadaa republic or integrative Great Oromia; i.e  democratic Ethiopia, with the Cushitic flag, which I would like to suggest as common flag of future union: Abbaa-Gadaa’s flag with Odaa and its surrounding golden sunshine in the middle. This newly constructed (mixed) flag can be used as symbol of our unity for freedom, because it is the combination of OLF’s Odaa surrounded by golden sunshine on Abbaa-Gadaa’s tricolor, the new mix which we can choose as national flag of future independent Gadaa Oromia or that of integrative Great Oromia/democratic Ethiopia. Such Oromummaa led Ethiopia shall flourish on the grave of Amharanet dominated Ethiopia. All other nations in Ethiopia either keep the existing domination of Amharanet or support the emerging leadership of Oromummaa. May Waqaa help us!
