October 8, 2021 (JUBA) - The Ethiopian Prime Minister has accepted the proposal of the East African bloc, IGAD, that South Sudanese President Salva Kiir mediates process to settle the nearly one-year armed conflict with the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Presidential Spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny said Friday the Ethiopian leader, Abiy Ahmed has officially accepted the proposal of the regional bloc which identified Kiir as a suitable person in the region to mediate the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia.
“The Ethiopian Prime Minister has now accepted the proposal by the IGAD which asked President Salva Kiir Mayardit to mediate the talk between the Government of Ethiopia and brothers from Tigray,” said Ateny.
Speaking to the UN Radio in Juba Miraya FM on Friday, he pointed out that the process would be launched soon as Prime Minister Abiy took the oath of office on 4 October for a second term after the elections.
President Salva Kiir was officially informed of the acceptance to mediate the talks by Prime Minister himself when he attended the inauguration ceremony this week,” said Ateny without indicating when the talks would begin.
In September, Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who is also the IGAD Chair said Kiir was the right person for the job, pointing to his personal connection and relations with Ethiopian leaders.
"The Chair of IGAD requested President Kiir to go to Ethiopia believing that he is the right person to mediate the Ethiopian conflict. Hamdok said Kiir was the right person to mediate talks between Addis Ababa and the regional government in Tigray," South Sudan Information Minister Michael Makuei, told media in September.
Hamdok later confirmed he had asked Kiir to mediate the talks between the Ethiopian rivals.
"The president accepted the request and now preparations are underway so that this mediation process starts," Ateny said in a separate interview.
The Ethiopian northern region has been wracked by violence since November 2020, when Abiy sent troops into Tigray to contain activities of the ruling Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
His response resulted in a full-scale conflict that displaced some 2.1 million people in Tigray. Also, there are 250,000 people in the Amhara region and 112,000 IDPs according to the local authorities and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
It is not clear if the rebels would join the negotiating table.
Last July, the regional armed group called to negotiate a ceasefire agreement asked first for the withdrawal of the Amhara militiamen and Eritrean soldiers from the region.

Perhaps fake news, but negotiation based on what ? Western Tigray aka Northern amhara is going to be problematic for Abbiy to negotiate with the weyanes. Releasing political prisoners may or may not be a hurdle. I don't believe there will be negotiations unless Abbiy wants to mend his relations with the West badly. The weyanes have revenge in their minds, and they want the Ethio defense forces on their side. That also is very unlikely. If the news is true, Abbiy is just buying time.

"ሰብ ጸውዕ ተበልክዎስ ዓጋመ" ድዮም ዝብሉ ሰብ ዓድና. Why would anyone call on Klir? Besides, there is not going to be any negotiation with terrorists. There is only one ending to the movie and that is the total eradication of the TPLF thugs

Is that spinning before even the news is confirmed.
Why wouldn't you be able to say Abiy is surrendering if he goes against you and negotiate, instead of crediting Abiy with the brilliant strategy of "buying time". I just wonder how far people go to prostitute themselves to protect Abiy even after admitting/claiming what he is about to do is against their principle and belief.

Agame educator,
Instead of taking one context out of the whole picture, why don't you look at the premises first. Abbiy would have to betray the amharas to do so. That is very dangerous. The amharas outnumber the agames you know.

Negotiating with woyanes and stopping the fight would be a blessing for the Amharas that are bleeding beyond repair in Wollo and Gondar. Imagine all the rapes, displacement, and looting that will cease if negotiations is to take place tomorrow.

It is really hard for me to rule the veracity of this info. If it is found to be true, it would be THE MOST GRAVE mistake to be done by the Prime Minister. The mediation would never bring a peace to the country rather shift the epicenter of the disorder from Tigray to other regions. Any form of peace deal with TPLF would be a suicide not only to the Prime Minister but also to his Prosperity Party, and in general to the country's unity. TPLF is a disease! It has to be eliminated by whatever cost! Giving it a thriving environment to survive means nothing but KILLING THE PATIENT instead of GETTING RID OF THE DISEASE. "ልጅ ያቦካው ለእራት አይበቃም" የሚለው ተረት አሁን ነው የገባኝ።

I know you have said "at any cost" which reminds me ESAT's and የነእንጨብጣታለን genocidal call to sacrifice 6 million Amhara to kill 6 million Tigrayans. You need to remember that[/b] Isaias, Abiy, United Arab Emirates and Amhara Regional state all jointly tried and failed miserably! You need to accept that it is not possible! Period! To help you understand that it is not possible, I will remind you the story of "The Mice in Council" - one of Aesop's old stories.Assegid S. wrote: ↑10 Oct 2021, 18:29TPLF is a disease! "The Mice in Council" Written by Aesop (620 and 564 BCE)
The Mice once called a meeting to decide on a plan to free themselves of their enemy, the Cat. At least they wished to find some way of knowing when she was coming, so they might have time to run away. Indeed, something had to be done, for they lived in such constant fear of her claws that they hardly dared stir from their dens by night or day.
Many plans were discussed, but none of them was thought good enough. At last a very young Mouse got up and said:
"I have a plan that seems very simple, but I know it will be successful.
All we have to do is to hang a bell about the Cat's neck. When we hear the bell ringing we will know immediately that our enemy is coming."
All the Mice were much surprised that they had not thought of such a plan before. But in the midst of the rejoicing over their good fortune, an old Mouse arose and said:
"I will say that the plan of the young Mouse is very good. But let me ask one question: Who will bell the Cat?"
It is one thing to say that something should be done, but quite a different matter to do it.
So, the question you need to answer is: Who will bell the Cat?"
The world body's Secretary General has declared, "I don't think it is possible to defeat the TPLF". So you just have to accept the painful truth even though it hearts.

And once again TPLF says it's facing "final attack" in Amhara. Really?

Hello Sarcasm; thanks for sharing "The Mice in Council" allegory.
In Economics, there is a market phenomenon called ' a dead cat bounce.' Investopedia defines the term as " a temporary, short-lived recovery of asset prices from a prolonged decline that is followed by the continuation of the downtrend. Frequently, downtrends are interrupted by brief periods of recovery"
The tern of phrase came from the idea that "even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height." Of course the expression could be used in any situation where the subject (for our case, TPLF) experiences a brief recovery following a severe decline. The bouncing cat, that seems alive and vigorous to scare the 'Mice' is in fact DEAD. You Stay Far n Safe
